OR, from a different angle - he knows full well they’re mates

“I have no regrets in my life, but this. That we did not have time. That I did not have time with you, Nesta. I will find you in the next world - the next life. And we will have that time. I promise.“ 

This is not a love confession in a traditional understanding of this term. He doesn’t say ‘’I love you’’. He doesn’t ask if she loves him. Tbh, this speech sounds as if they were already a couple, although for a short time. It implies that this connection they have is something real and something acknowledged.

It’s shockingly inappropriate, actually, given what we know - from Feyre’s perspective - of their relationship at this point. Because she can see, just like anyone else, that there is this mating bond something between them, but, according to Feyre’s knowledge, they never actually verbalized it until that moment on a battlefield. They are not ‘official’ in anyway, have no public claim on each other. And yet, Cassian speaks to her as if she was his lover. 

As if she was his mate. And was aware of this. 

This situation is not: ‘’I am in love with her but I’m not sure how she feels about me cause we never actually had a converstation about it, just a shitton of banter and sexual tension,  so I will confess with my dying breath’’ - 

It is: ‘’I know you love me, I love you too, I’m sorry I did not have time to show it to you’’

Here’s your daily reminder that hating characters isn’t trendy! If you have your personal reasons for hating them that’s fine but don’t just do it because it’s suddenly popular and the only thing you’re seeing. That being said maybe don’t overly praise flawed characters either. 

For stories where the main character(s) are not perfect but rather human in my personal opinion you should try to hold a good middle ground. Call them out on what they can do better, you’re allowed to get angry when they do something stupid. But also be appreciative the good things they do (because characters like the inner circle do good things as well) you can still laugh with them and enjoy the more intimate parts of their life. This is the kind of mindset we need to have when reading. Especially when reading 1st person. Because the point of view is often biased when in first person and before “picking sides” you need to see everything and see why both sides think they’re doing the right thing or why they might view their actions as justified. 

You certainly can hate characters (yes even main ones) but don’t do it because they don’t have the “best” attitude, don’t get along with their family, sometimes make stupid decisions. You can’t hate a character for having flaws because that’s what makes them human.

Lots of people saying how terrible of a spymaster Azriel is for not realizing Mor doesn’t love him. I’m here to offer my sadder interpretation of why Azriel, indeed a master in spying, still pined for Mor after 500 years.

I think that Azriel has known all along that Mor doesn’t love him and that is exactly why he is content to always pine after her. He grew up in a dark cell and only got to see his mother once a week, for an hour. His people hated him and even the rest of his family treated him lower than garbage. Ingrained within every fiber of his being is thinking that he isn’t worthy of anything, especially love. So he continues to seek it from a source that won’t return it because at the end of the day, he thinks it’s exactly what he deserves. Never to be loved in return. And he is resigned to that.
