Commonwealth games 2022

The event is known as Birmingham 2022, is an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth that is scheduled to be held in Birmingham, England from 28 July to 8 August 2022. Birmingham was announced as host on 21 December 2017, marking England's third time hosting the Commonwealth Games after London 1934 and Manchester 2002. On 11 August 2020, the BOCCG announced that the athletes and team officials will be housed in three ‘campus’ villages close to competition venues at the University of Birmingham, The University of Warwick, and The NEC Hotel Campus. Around 1,600 athletes and officials are set to be accommodated at the NEC Hotel Campus, 1,900 at The University of Warwick, and the principal village with 2,800 at The University of Birmingham.

Birmingham 2022 will take place in 15 venues spread across the West Midlands region, with seven of them, including the athletics stadium and marathon route, is located in the city of Birmingham. The National Exhibition Centre complex, located on the fringes of the city in neighbouring Solihull, will play host to the Games both in its exhibition halls and at the NEC Arena. The six other regional hosts are Coventry, Cannock Chase, Royal Leamington Spa, Sandwell, Warwick and Wolverhampton. Ranji Trophy, 2021-22: Finals

This year's Ranji season was a bit different. It started in March, before the IPL. The group stage was played in 6 different cities. Then there was a break in between for the IPL. For the first time in its history, the knockout stage of the Ranji Trophy was played in June. After the conclusion of the knockout stage, we had 2 finalists. The 41-time champions, Mumbai, and the underdogs, Madhya Pradesh, face off.   

Coming into the match itself, it was a near-perfect performance from Madhya Pradesh to pin down the tournament's most successful team. After conceding 374 in the first innings with the ball thanks to Sarfaraz Khan's ton for Mumbai, the MP batters stepped up when it was their turn with the bat. Yash Dubey and Shubham Sharma put on a show as they stitched a 222-run partnership for the second wicket. It was followed by another good partnership between Rajat Patidar and Aditya Shrivastava. Patidar and captain Shrivastava scored 60 runs for the fourth wicket. Madhya Pradesh managed to score 500 plus runs in the first innings. 3 MP batters scored brilliant respective hundreds. MP managed to take a healthy lead in the first innings. 

After a super job by the batters, the MP bowlers rose to the occasion and stopped Mumbai at 269 in their second innings, setting a target of 108 for themselves. With just 108 to get, Shubham Sharma and Rajat Patidar did the job with the bat again and brought the trophy home for Madhya Pradesh. This is MP's first Ranji Trophy win since the inception of Madhya Pradesh cricket.

Since the 2010 Commonwealth Games, India has been consistently represented by over 200 athletes at the quadrennial showpiece. The Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, UK, is also expected to see a sizable Indian contingent in action.

The Birmingham 2022 Games are scheduled to be held from July 28 to August 8, but the qualification and team selection processes are still ongoing. Here’s a list of Indian sportspersons who have qualified for the Commonwealth Games 2022 till now.

India's 12-member team was led by Tokyo Olympics silver medallist and reigning Commonwealth champion Mirabai Chanu, India’s 12-member team was one of the first to be finalized.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga, Achinta Sheuli, Ajay Singh, and Purnima Pandey secured their spots by winning gold medals in their respective categories at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021 in December last year, while the remaining eight made the cut at the Singapore Weightlifting International 2022.

Mirabai Chanu was expected to compete in the 55kg division at the Commonwealth Games 2022 instead of her pet 49kg but had to revert back due to late rule changes.

Birmingham 2022 will see cricket’s second appearance in the CWG program. The first, in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, featured a men’s 50-over tournament, but at Birmingham in 2022, a women’s T20I format was played.

The eight-team affair at CWG 2022 will involve hosts England, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Barbados, and Sri Lanka. The Indian cricket team is one of the five teams qualified for the Commonwealth Games 2022 courtesy of its ICC WT20I ranking.

Both the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams have already made the cut for the Commonwealth Games 2022 based on their FIH rankings. The men’s and women’s hockey competitions will be 10-team affairs. The Indian women won the CWG hockey gold in 2002, but the men are still searching for their first, with two silver medals (2010 and 2014) being their best finishes to date.

Tamil Nadu Premier League Begins

The league's sixth season will feature eight teams, including the reigning champions, Chepauk Super Gillies, competing for the title at four different sites across the state. There will be 28 league stage games plus four playoff stage matches in total. The matches begin at 7:15 p.m. IST, with the first match starting at 3:15 p.m. IST on the double-header day. The league stage will feature eight teams playing in a single round-robin format, with the top four teams progressing to the playoff stages after the league round is completed. The TNPL 2022 league stage matches will begin in Tirunelveli, before moving on to Dindigul, Coimbatore, and Salem.

While the season opener is held at the Indian Cement Company Grounds in Tirunalveli, the finals will be held at SNR College Cricket Ground, Coimbatore. Apart from the final, the Coimbatore venue will also play host to the Qualifier 2 after Salem hosts the Qualifier 1 and Eliminator matches at the Salem Cricket Foundation Stadium.
