Last go around for Daniel Jones in NY?
Giants are rebuilding, we all know it!
The New York Giants might be enjoying hearing and seeing themselves on HBO’s Hard Knocks, but the reality will soon hit them that all the theatrics and playing to the camera, they do not have the talent to compete on the field when the 2024 upcoming NFL season gets underway in a little more than a month.
This is a team that is in clear rebuilding stage and even though some of the moves they made during the off-season would say otherwise, this team is not going anywhere anytime soon.
The biggest question mark surrounding the team is the health of their so-called “franchise QB” in Daniel Jones. How will their inconsistent and often criticized signal caller respond to the noise?
What do we realistically expect from Jones in 2024?
The much-maligned 27-year-old quarterback is coming off a season to forget as he suffered off a torn ACL last November. The Giants finished the 2023 season 6-11 as they shuffled in several QBs under center when Jones went done.
He was not fully cleared in the spring but stated he expects to be ready to go when Giants veterans report for training camp Tuesday.
The injury and setback to Jones had a major impact on the franchise, because he was coming off his best season as a pro as he guided the Giants to the playoffs where they won a road game against the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wildcard, before being trounced by the eventually NFC Champions and bitter rival Philadelphia Eagles, 35-7.
What made matters worse is after his solid season in 2022, New York inked Jones to a new four-year deal worth $160 million, which also per reports at the time included $35 million in additional incentives. So, it is safe to save this might be the last go around for Jones in New York.
In a league where it seems every starting QB can throw for over 4,000 yards and 25 plus touchdowns a season, Jones is best season came in 2022 when he passed for 3205 yards and tossed 15 TD’s while also adding seven rushing TD’s and another 708 yards on the ground. He has skill and he is a tough QB, and he uses his legs when he has too.
But the injury history is scary, and the Giants are not used to this. They were blessed with having a QB in ironman Eli Manning who never missed a start in his career due to injury. Jones is not Manning. And he will never be!
But can New York get a healthy and motivated Jones who knows he is fighting for his career? They added more weapons again and it is time for Jones to elevate his game or he might not only be out of New York, but maybe out of the league.
If Jones plays 17 games and the Giants are competitive and he is steady and can finally crack 4,000 yards passing and combine to run and throw for 30 plus TD’s, then the Giants have something to work with and maybe they can reconcile and rekindle that lukewarm affair from a few seasons ago.
Are the Giants in a love/hate marriage with Jones!
New York can end this relationship after the season. Jones is entering year six of this rocky relationship, and the Giants can file for divorce after the 2024. But, oh man it will cost them dearly. The release of Jones would see a $22.2 million dead money hit and $19.4 million in salary cap savings. But, if the talented but inconsistent QB suffers a serious injury in 2024 (like a torn ACL) that would most likely prevent him from passing a very important physical at cut time next season, the Giants would have to sitting alone at the table with $25 million worth of egg on their collected faces. The $25 million is part of his non-guaranteed $30 million salary in 2025. Breath Giants fans.
That could be a major issue because the Giants might do something unheard off – and that is bench Jones and keep him off the field if need be. If the Giants thought all eyes are on them during “Hard Knocks” wait until No. 8 and Big Blue hit the field to open the season at home against the Minnesota Vikings on September 9th.
