So, one of my academic advisors in graduate school got her PhD at UC Berkeley in the late 80s when Toni Morrison was there as a Chancellor's Fellow. She would frequently go to Morrison's office hours (you can imagine how much she still loves to tell stories about this to anyone who will listen, as one would) and be able to stay for much longer than she'd expected because Morrison's office hours were shockingly not all that busy.
When my advisor asked why the actual fuck her fellow English grad students weren't taking advantage of the opportunity to go sit and have tea with Toni Morrison, the common refrain was that they were afraid because she was "too intimidating."
(Note: Several of these students frequently shared rooms with/got creative writing feedback from Ursula K. LeGuin just fine, but Toni Morrison was "intimidating." Okay.)
Someone here calls James Baldwin a pretentious cunt, someone on Twitter says Toni Morrison sounded exhausting to be friends with/unfriendly because of how intelligent she was... What if we exploded the world?
#my advisor also said that Morrison's presence filled a room with regal self-assurance#and that to be able to even sit in that presence was indescribably wonderful#let alone get to actually talk to her about literature and writing
