Rereading Claymore now is just thinking, damn, what a cool manga this was. An action manga with a mainly female cast, a rarity even now, and while not every character is developed thoroughly and the similar appearances do get confusing sometimes (particularly towards the end), you still get to know a variety of personalities and get to enjoy said personalities interacting with each other and developing some intriguing dynamics and relationships.

The bond between Clare and Teresa. The hatred (?) between Roxanne and Cassandra. The camaraderie between Helen and Deneve. The respect between Miria and Tabitha. The loyalty of Jean. The haunting of Ophelia. I could go on and on and granted, there are a lot of characters and relationships that I thought could've been fleshed out more; for example, the developing maternal bond between Miata and Clarice was something that I would've liked to have been shown more before their final fight against the awakened being. Their ending was beautifully written but rang emotionally hollow for me, because it felt like Clarice grew a lot between the last time we saw her and the final fight, but that growth was all off-screen.

I could nitpick at other weaknesses in the writing, but none of that changes my opinion that ultimately, Claymore is a great achievement of a story and I wish we had more like it.

I want to talk about Sebastian and his uncomfortable behavior in «Play of the Lord of Crime»

His behavior is exactly uncomfortable, not awkward or any other synonym

He is behaving in character. Hear me out 🙏🙏

Why is he uncomfortable?

From the main manga, we know that Sebastian, from the first meeting with little William, decided he NEEDS to be Will's shield and sword (gun) and become his personal hero

They met when William was about 11 or 12 years old.

Which means at the time of this story, Moran has been living with the idea of being William's constant support for more than a decade. And not the other way around.

But when he comes to ask for money, it's a direct opposition to his own idea of himself. Because HE needs William's help now

In this scene, he is not embarrassed in front of William; Will has seen him in a worse state (after returning from the war)

Here, Moran actively struggles with psychological dissonance: the difference between his own “I-desired” and “I-real”

where "I-desired" = I'm William's right hand, his hero, and he can always rely on me

and "I-real" = I screwed up with a large sum of money, I need William to be my hero

(And the reason he needs money is because he was caught cheating at cards. The field that he is a master of, and everyone knows it, doesn't make the situation any easier for him)

People struggle with the gap between their self-image + how they think they should behave, and situations when they NEED to act in a way that is completely opposite to desired image. It's difficult to acknowledge & accept that you don't meet your own expectations.

So, he first lies, then tries to turn everything into a joke, then gives a speech about how "it's time for me to grow up, I can handle it on my own."

These are all attempts to cope with discomfort of the confrontation with existing difference.

Deneve possesses strong emotional intelligence, which makes her a good leader.

However, Miria excels in battle intelligence (is this the right name for it??) and is the superior strategist. Yet, her high level of empathy and idealistic worldview do not work in her favor as a leader.

That’s why Deneve continuously supports Miria & her leadership, ultimately becoming her "backbone" (source of psychological strength and stability)
