you know, I always said I wanted to be an editor when I was a kid, but now that I'm peer-reviewing stuff for publication I think maybe I'm not cut out to be an editor. editing when the writing is bad is Less Fun.

to ramble about something this blog does NOT have an audience for (the TRB graphic novel that just came out):
because I am hopelessly nosy, I was deeply curious what the remnants of the TRC fandom were going to think about the adaptation, so naturally I went looking!
there's a decent amount of love, but in the true tradition of this fandom there is also a critic's streak a mile wide, and I'm loathe to be like "why does anyone every expect good things" (because 1. that's pessimistic and 2. not an accurate representation of my worldview) BUT, HAVING SAID THAT,
as soon as the graphic novel was announced, I didn't expect it to be good. there was simply no way that the grittier elements of stief's writing would make it in, or that all the character nuances that were carefully written into the prose would be translated into a graphic adaptation.
I'm the world's most annoying person because one of my favorite college stories I like to tell is that I took a single class on comics and graphic novels and literature and that semester ruined me for reading 90% of graphic novels. I developed a sincere respect for the media form and an understanding of how it can be used to tell stories that CANNOT be told any other way (maus could not be anything but a graphic novel; epileptic could not be anything but a graphic novel; watchmen could not etc. etc.)
and that means when I pick up a graphic novel these days, there's an 80% chance I sigh in frustration by page 10 because it's obvious that the piece of media I am holding in my hands is, effectively, a picture book for adults(/teens). it's not a graphic novel. there is no consideration for using art to communicate what cannot be shown via prose/dialogue. there's no slight of hand in using the art to convey things that challenge the reader's eye and make each panel worth poring over. it's just A Picture Book. which: hey that's fine not all media has to be some nutrient-dense feast, but like... that doesn't mean it's "good" at being a graphic novel
which is to say that I anticipated from the start that the TRB graphic novel would not only cull an incredible amount of story in its adaptation (because there is simply no way to fit the whole book into a graphic novel; it would need to be like a chaptered comic to do that, and my god, it would take years and years), but that a painful amount of the characters' interiority would be lost in the adaptation.
stories should fit the mediums in which they are told. like yeah we can all point to adaptations of media we like (I for one hugely enjoy the Dune movies) but someone who deeply loves the source media can usually point out flaws in the adaptation that reduce down something that was in the original. TRC was meant to be a series. more than that, it was specifically written to be reread as both a statement on the narrative and on the nature of time/meaning. the prose matters. the tricks stief plays on the readers in her writing matter. they were always always going to be lost in a graphic novel interpretation. the story was never meant to be told in that way. I'd argue that even a TV show adaptation of TRC—while interesting, and while I would CERTAINLY watch it—would also flatten the storyline. it's meant to be prose. an adaptation would always, and will always, imo, feel empty

In The Room S10E03 In this episode the Pens fight for a playoff spot, go on a winning streak, then take on a crazy run of five games in one week. The team suffer after Geno gets injured but spirits are lifted with the return of “mustache boy” after Rusty loses a practice shootout.

Do you think sid was on his way out the door to the event and nathalie stopped him to fuss over him like he was her own child
I think she sighed in relief that the middlingly-trained border collie with a hockey obsession was leaving her house for a few hours
