coffee run

“why didn’t you tell me you don’t like coffee?” you pout as you and wonbin head back to the library together.

wonbin shrugs.

you continue, “you literally asked me to get coffee, whole time you don’t even like it. what is this reasoning?”

“you don’t like it either. you ordered tea. why’d you accept? what’s YOUR reasoning?” he responds, referring to your drink amusingly.

as you open your mouth, you notice at the corner of your eye some people staring. dismissing it, you exclaim, “well, it’s better than a chocolate milk.”

wonbin pulls his chocolate milk into himself. “i was gonna offer you a taste, but this hating attitude you have is making me think you don’t want any.”

your brain buffers. you do want chocolate milk, you think, as you retreat from your statements.

“wait,” you let out a smile showing all your teeth. “wait, nooo, lemme try,” you say, trying to reach for his milk.

as you do so, you catch another group of people staring at you and wonbin. odd.

wonbin jogs away from you, prompting you to chase him throughout the little campus yard at your uni. you chase after him, running carefully not to spill your tea.

after a couple of minutes, you give up, panting on the ground with your cup in your hands. “i surrender. you can keep your childish ass chocolate milk. i’ll go back and grab myself something more dignified like a hot chocolate.”

wonbin looks down at you and he begins to crouch. “hot chocolate is like a boiled chocolate milk.”

you scoff in his face. “no it’s not. shut up. also. why the fuck are you so fast?”

wonbin wiggles his eyebrows. “why are you so slow?”

you glare at him. “i’ll dump my tea on your head.”

wonbin giggles as he sits down with you on the grass. “i did track when i was a kid,” he reaches for your tea, “here, let’s switch,” he says as he hands you his chocolate milk.

you go to drink it when you see another group of people staring at you, this time it’s a group of girls almost studying the two of you.

after tasting his drink and handing it back, and both of you standing up, “i admit defeat. the chocolate milk was justified,” you begrudgingly tell wonbin.

as you enter the library, you see another guy staring at you when you finally break and ask wonbin, “is there something in my fucking teeth or something? why is everyone looking at us?” you turn to wonbin, showing off your teeth to check.

he shakes his head as he gestures no and moves the hair out of your face. “you’re fine. people are just like that.”

as the two of you head to the elevators, it’s silent. “what floor you on?” wonbin asks when the elevator arrives.

“ummm i think 7th.” he goes to press it as he presses 5 for himself.

as the elevator doors close, you purse your lips, not wanting wonbin to leave, when you remember your convo from before.

“wait, are you alone? come study with sohee, seunghan and i.”

wonbin shakes his head. “nah, it’s cool. you guys probably have your own rhythm.”

you grab his arm as you reason sternly, “no, come on. you promised to help cuz we got coffee. come upstairs, i’ll help you bring your stuff up.” you pull his arm with you as the door opens to five.

he smiles at you as he leads you to his stuff, preparing to move upstairs, with your arm holding onto his.

“loser!” anton shouts at sungchan. somehow, a simple hang-out has turned into a mini party with games, loud music thumping in the background, and anton destroying sungchan at beer pong. not feeling up for anything active, you decide to watch the game from sungchan’s couch.

“hi.” looking up, you find wonbin standing over you.

“hey,” you respond, motioning to the empty seat next to you, encouraging him to sit.

wonbin takes a seat, leaning over with his bag of chips. “want some?”

you accept, and the two of you quietly chew away, watching the beer pong game unfold.

“sungchan sucks so bad,” wonbin remarks, breaking the silence.

“right? his aim is terrible,” you laugh, watching the tall boy frown after missing another shot .

“where’s yunjin?” wonbin asks.

you nod toward the other corner of the apartment, where yunjin, eunseok, and sohee are huddled together playing uno. “apparently, sohee brought uno, and eunseok said he was the best, so obviously yunjin had to take both of them on.”

a moment passes. hyper aware of how close wonbin is sitting, your palms grow sweaty. your cold drink suddenly feels like it’s burning your hand. desperate to shake the feeling, you get up and announce, “i’m getting another drink.”

“i’ll come with,” he says, following you into the kitchen.

grabbing the drinks sohee had picked out just for you, you hoist yourself onto the countertop. “i really like this place. i wish my apartment was like this.”

wonbin hums. “me too. i’m over here a lot. sungchan kinda hates me for it.” he moves to stand to your right, leaning against the counter.

both of you sip your drinks in comfortable silence until your gaze moves toward him.

you notice the way his long hair falls, slightly covering his ears. the way his full lips rest in a natural pout. the way his jawline is sharp yet soft at the same time. fuck, his side profile is pretty, you think.

you’re so focused on ogling that you don’t notice when he turns his head to meet your gaze.

“what? do i have something on my face? why are you staring at me?”

your face grows hot, and you quickly look away. “no, sorry. i just zone out when i’m tipsy.”

a beat of silence passes before you decide, fuck it. you take a swig of your drink and blurt out, “you have a nice side profile.”

wonbin’s lips curl into a smirk. “yeah?”

you take another sip for courage and repeat, “yeah,” before burying your face in your drink again.

wonbin laughs softly and steps in front of you. “hey, slow down.”

you lower the can from your mouth, suddenly aware of how close he’s standing—one more step, and he’d be directly between your legs. holy shit.

“no,” you reply, lifting the drink again.

amused, wonbin carefully steps closer, his hand reaching for yours. “come on, you gotta be careful.”

you sigh, letting him pull your arm away. the feeling of warmth lingering on your arms as he places your drink on the counter beside you. from this distance, you can see every detail of his face.

“you have really pretty eyes,” you blurt out, the words escaping before you can stop them. what is wrong with you today?

wonbin’s smirk grows wider. “aren’t you full of compliments tonight?”

“yeah, well, tipsy yn is nice, i guess,” you mumble, staring down at your hands.

“i disagree.” your head snaps up, ready to argue, but before you can, he continues, “i think yn is always nice.”

he moves closer, his right palm now resting on the counter on your left. “and you have pretty eyes, too,” he says softly, his face inching closer to yours.

“thanks,” you whisper.

just before anything more can happen, seunghan strides into the kitchen, heading straight for the drinks. noticing his presence, wonbin steps back, and you scoot slightly away, trying to calm down your racing heart.

“there you are,” seunghan says, oblivious to the tension. “sungchan was looking for you.”

clearing your throat, you ask, “me or wonbin?”

“wonbin,” seunghan replies, ripping open a packet of chips. with a mouthful, he adds, “he’s getting his ass beat badly. he wants you to save him from anton’s annoying bragging.”

you giggle at the comment.

“sure, let’s go,” wonbin says, heading toward the living room.

as seunghan exits, wonbin leans in toward you, whispering in your ear, “bye, yn,” before he follows seunghan.

“do you like this?” ningning asks, holding up a black long sleeve. looking down at the top, you inspect it for a second before telling her it’d look great and to put it in the “to try” pile. your eyes drift back to the clothing rack, a sigh escaping your lips. you’ve been here for over an hour with ningning, yet you’ve only found one thing you liked, while ningning has practically filled her basket.

after another 10 minutes of browsing through the clothing rack, you finally spot an off-the-shoulder grey sweater that has potential. picking it up and walking towards ningning, you drape the top over the clothes you’re wearing.

“what do we think?” ningning stares at you with a smile for a couple of seconds too long. growing concerned at her silence, you look down at the top. as you question if it wasn’t as cute as you initially thought it was, you hear a soft boo! in your right ear. slightly jumping, you turn your head towards the sound, seeing a giggling wonbin next to you.

“holy shit, you scared me,” you whisper-scream, as you stumble back after realizing your faces were a bit too close.

“you need to pay attention to your surroundings,” he teases, as he looks over to ningning. “hey, ningning.”

shotaro appears next to wonbin, giving both you and ningning a warm smile as a greeting. “hey guys, this place is so cool,” shotaro mentions in awe while looking around.

ningning mirrors his behavior, looking around herself. “i know, i have no idea how yn just stumbled upon it.”

shrugging, you say, “maybe i’m just blessed like that.”

as ningning and shotaro continue to admire the place, you look back at your grey sweater, frowning as you decide to place it back on the rack. before you can, wonbin interrupts. “no, no, wait, what are you doing? lemme see that.”

you reluctantly hand him the top as he inspects it. then he holds it up to you for another 5 seconds as you awkwardly stand there. “get it,” wonbin says.

“really? you don’t think it’s ugly?” you mumble as you take the top from his hand.

wonbin shakes his head. “no, i think it’ll look cute. you’re pretty; you can pull it off,” he casually answers. doing your best to not delve too deep into the implications of wonbin thinking you’re pretty, you mumble out an agreement as you take the top back in your hands.

“hey, ningning and i are gonna go check out the pants section. you guys wanna come?” shotaro asks.

you shake your head. “that’s okay. i’m just gonna check out this section a bit more.” wonbin also declines, saying he’ll help you out.

after ningning and shotaro leave, you raise your eyebrows at him. “you’ll help me out?” wonbin laughs. “yes, i am a fashion god. come on, let’s look.”

after successfully finding 3 new tops for youself, you decide to look for some hats. walking over to the hat section, you see wonbin picking up a hat and trying it on.

“ew, you’re gonna get lice.”

“eh, have some fun, yn,” wonbin wiggles his eyebrows. grabbing a winter hat, he hovers it over your head. “can i?” he asks playfully but softly. 

begrudgingly, you say, “fine, but if i get lice, i’m making you shave my hair.”

wonbin stupidly grins as he places the hat on your head, his fingers brushing lightly against your skin as he ties the strings under your chin. he stifles a laugh.

"what? does it look bad?" you worry.

"noo, it’s just covering half your face," stepping back, letting his chuckles out.

“you just don’t know how to put on a hat,” you grumble as you reach for the strings.

wonbin’s fingers wrap gently around your wrists, stopping you from reaching the strings. “no, wait, let me take a pic. you look so silly right now.”

he pulls out his phone, snapping some pictures. once he’s satisfied, he reaches under your chin and fixes the hat so it lays nicely on your head. “hmmmmm, i like it,” he says.

looking into the mirror again, you examine yourself in the hat. “it is cute, but i don’t know. maybe there’s something better.” you place the hat down and look for something else.

as you sort through the hats, you hear wonbin asking for your opinion about the hat he’s wearing. your gaze flickers to wonbin, his silky hair pushed back beneath a black snapback. your heart skips a beat. fuck, why is he the prettiest guy on the planet.

“i like it,” you say. 

adjusting the snapback as he glances at you,  “okay if you like it, then i’ll get it.”

ningning and shotaro catch up to you guys, asking if you’re ready to check out. nodding yes, the four of you head over to the cashier. once everything is paid for, the group heads out of the store, you walking alongside wonbin. out of nowhere, wonbin hands you the hat you tried on before.

“here, it looked good on you.”

you glance at him in shock. “i can’t take this.”

“shhhh, just take it,” he says, placing it on your head again.

you hesitate for a moment before taking off the hat and carefully tucking it into your bag. “thank you, wonbin. you really didn’t have to.”

a playful grin tugs at wonbin’s lips at your gratitude.
