As the oldest, Zelda often thinks of herself as a leader or a guide. She’s the big sister people often go to when they don’t have their own, the mom friend of all her respective friend groups. She’s sweet and thoughtful and sometimes has a hard time letting lose. Following the rules is basically all she’s ever known, and it’s hard for her let go of all that rule following that she had been taught to do.

If asked, Zelda would say one of the most defining moments of her life was the passing of her mother. Cancer took Gwendolyn Rutherford when Zelda was just thirteen, with her father now left to take care of his children, Zelda stood up. At the time she didn’t not think she would end up taking her mother’s place so to speak, but Zelda spent the rest of her childhood tending to her siblings and herself while their father worked, he was a police officer so he wasn’t able to be home as much as he wanted. 

The one thing she kept near and dear to her heart was being in the kitchen, before Gwen got sick, she’d spend hours in the kitchen with Zelda teaching her out to cook and bake. As she got older, Zelda used the kitchen has her own form of therapy, when she was upset or needed time to think she’d often bake or cook, Sometimes even clean if baking can’t help clear her mind.

Richard and Josephine Smythe moved their little family from Toulouse, France to Spruce Pine, North Carolina with the hopes of building a legacy for their family. And they did. Their country club and ski resort quickly climbed the ranks and was consistently rated one of the best and most prestigious. Unfortunately for them, Theo had no interest in the family business. When he was 15, his parents went through a publicly silent but otherwise very messy divorce that left them battling for custody. That happens, he supposes, when your father is caught having an affair with a barely legal bev cart girl. Theo was initially awarded to his father. To protest his interest in living with him, he habitually snuck out and stayed out until the early hours of morning. He ran away, couch surfed with friends, and stirred up a lot of trouble -- to the point of spending some time in the backs of police cars -- until they finally decided to give custody to his mother instead. Theo was sated but had fallen into the bad habit of finding trouble wherever he went. It wasn’t intentional. Things just happened to him and he went with it.

When it came to college, his impulsiveness certainly didn’t wane. Theo would try anything at least once. That convoluted outlook on his own life is exactly how he got mixed up in the world of drugs. Selling as well as partaking recreationally. Besides, his mother had been encouraging him to fend for himself instead of coasting by on the family’s money so that’s exactly what he did. She never specified the how. And what with two pinnacle years of his life being taken over by leukemia, Theo didn’t feel he had all that much to lose anyway. He entered remission just in time to graduate. Though all the excitement from both events were dampened slightly when he found out his college girlfriend-turned-fiance admitted to cheating with his (now ex) best friend and roommate the whole time he was sick.

For six months he hopped from country to country, contacted no one save for the occasional postcard. Theo turned back home after a brief battle with pneumonia that worried him just enough. For the next year he lived an hour outside of Spruce Pine in the city of Asheville, reconnecting with friends and family and continuing to live his relatively carefree life. Until the raid on his apartment, anyway. Richard’s name, influence, and money worked greatly in Theo’s favor to save face and keep him out of prison. His father hasn’t spoken to him since.

Theo is currently living on the grounds of The Riviera. A stipulation of being bailed out yet again by his father. He works there under the title of Operations Supervisor which was entirely made up on the spot to keep him busy enough to, hopefully, stop doing dumb things. Theo checks in with areas all over the club and the resort, fills in where it’s warranted, and oversees the employee housing. Basically a stepping stone between supervisors and full blown management. He’s keeping his head low but not down because if there’s anything you can rely on Theo for it’s his absolute knack for overlooking consequences.
