Parce que c'était lui parce que c'était moi

To be honest, it was Mercutio’s idea. Well, nobody has threatened him to be part of it. But Tybalt would be damned if he had given him up on this mission. And if he was totally honest with himself he was not at all surprised when Mercutio came up with this plan.

It was Rómeó’s day of retirement. After all these years at the head of the Montague and the family’s business he created with Benvolio, he decided to entrusted all of this to two of his many sons and daughters in order to spend happy days with his grandchildren and his beloved Júlia. Mercutio, Prince of Verona for thirty years now, completely agreed with him. His dear friend really deserved those future times of peace. So he wanted to make this moment unique and unforgettable. A souvenir of their wild youth.

That’s why Tybalt was there throwing away rainbows streamers on the roof of Rómeó and Júlia’s house. Mercutio was too busy trying to fix some piñatas on trees full of glitters. They also had to unroll a pink carpet in the main aisle and to set a banner with “Happy retirement suckers” written on it.

When everything was finished, the two jokers took a step behind to have a better view on their masterpiece. Mercutio sighs happily. A job well done is always a great satisfaction.

“ I would kill to see his face tomorrow morning. With his deer-like eyes and his mouth open like a fish out of the sea.”

Tybalt silently laughs at this image. He knows exactly that specific face Rómeó made when he was out of words. But as funny as the joke was, the Capulet has a terrible coughing fit who seems to tear apart his lungs. He tried to hide his bloody handkerchief but Mercutio saw everything although he didn’t say anything. The Prince turned his face slightly in the dark in order to hide his tears from his beloved. There are future prospects that you just never want to think about. For him he will always be his Prince of cats, growling at his enemies, rolling his eyes at Mercutio’s any comment. He doesn’t see the grey hairs on his head or the wrinkles at the corner of his eyes.

“By the way, did you talk with your nephew about his future duties ?”

For some years now, Mercutio was training his brother’s son to be the next Prince of Verona like his own uncle did with him. He was confident. This kid has a great sense of responsibilities and a unique mix of firmness and listening. He will be a great Prince. Now he has to decide when it will happen.

“I have to meet him tomorrow so we can talk and choose what time is the best”

Tybalt nods, his eyes fixed on his Mercutio. It will always amaze him to see how the king of words has changed from the reckless man he was to this respectful and mature Prince. Although at this moment Rómeó and Júlia’s house would disagree on that last statement.

“And what are you going to do, Your Grace after that ?”

“Surely going back home to our palace, slipping into our bed and falling asleep with my arms around you dear Tybalt, what are you talking about ?” Mercutio says with a hint of amusement.

His dear fellow just gave him a light punch to his shoulder. The prince laughed at that.

“I don’t know. It will be weird at first not to wake up early in the morning for meetings or requests from Verona’s people. But, you know, I am sure I will find new hobbies to distract my old soul.”

They just look at each other hand in hand. Tybalt just slightly leaned his head to Mercutio in order to give him a peck. It was thirty-five years ago that they did this for the first time and the butterflies were still there.

Yes the future will be just the two of them as always. Two soulmates never tear apart.

R&J / RetJ Week 2021

R&J / RetJ Week is back for round 2!

This fest is meant to be a relatively low-pressure (and hopefully fun) way to celebrate the fandom! The style of this event will be similar to a fest or a fandom week and is open to creators of all kinds of fanworks: fic, art, fanvids, graphics, gifs, crafts, etc.

Schedule:

Claiming opens: June 20, 2020

Claiming closes: July 11, 2020

Posting Week: July 12, 2020 – July 18, 2020

How will it work?

Short version: everyone who wants to participate will claim a ship or a RetJ production off the claiming lists and create a fanwork of any kind to feature their claimed ship or RetJ production. At any point during the posting week you will post your work (or works – feel free to make multiple!) on your own blog and tag it with #RandJweek. We will reblog everyone’s works here.

More detailed version:

There will be two lists, one for ships and one for RetJ productions.

If you claim a ship, you will create a fanwork featuring that ship. (The characterizations/what you use as canon does not need to be RetJ. You’re welcome to base your fanwork on the Shakespeare play or any movie/tv or theater/musical adaptation you like.)

If you claim a RetJ production, you will create a visual fanwork (art, edit, gifs, video, etc) featuring that production.

The idea behind the RetJ production claims is to feature the prod as a whole. You’re welcome to focus on some parts of the production more than others (e.g.: if you create a gif set, you can have a theme like “dancers” or “solos” if you so choose. Since we don’t have a characters list, you’re welcome to focus on a specific character/actor.) However, if you want to focus on a specific ship, please claim from the ships list.

In order to claim a ship or production you will need to send an Ask off-anon to this blog. We will reply to you privately to confirm if you got the claim. Claiming is first come first serve. The mods will update the post with the claiming lists as often as possible to reflect what has or hasn’t been claimed yet.

If you would like to claim/create a fanwork for a ship that is not on the official claims list, you are welcome to do so. Please send in an Ask in the same way you would to claim off the list.

Double claiming (i.e. claiming ships that have already been claimed) for a ship will only be allowed after ¾ of the ships on the list have been claimed. Double claiming for a prod will only be allowed after 2/3 of the prods on the list have been claimed. Once the minimum requisite has been claimed, we will open round 2 and all ships and/or prods will be available again until they are claimed for a second time.

Max of 2 claims per person per list (so each person can technically make up to 4 claims if they claim two ships and two prods).

Once the posting week begins, go ahead and post your work on any day of that week that is convenient for you! Make sure to tag it with #RandJweek. We will reblog everyone’s work here!

Why are we requiring claims and not allowing double claiming until a certain percentage of the list has been claimed?

Basically, we are aiming for a diversity of content. As it often happens, some ships and some prods are more popular than others and tend to dominate the fandom in the day-to-day. We would like to give a chance to the smaller ships and the lesser-known prods to shine!
