chaewon is nothing if not an impulsive shopper. she doesn’t even read that much, although she’s always telling herself she should read more. instead, she ends up with piles of books on her shelf that she’ll probably get to... someday... maybe. and, realizing that might not ever actually happen, she’s decided to give some of them away.
“while you’re here, yewon unnie,” she says, “take a look. i have a little of everything.” the books she’s decided to part with are stacked up on the table. there really is a bit of everything - fiction, nonfiction, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, instructional books, poetry - anything that had a shiny cover, basically. chaewon picks one up to glance at it. “ugh. historical fiction? what was i thinking?”
pouting, she flops down onto her bed. “you must read all the time, yewon. tell me your secrets. how do you even keep your eyes on the page for more than five minutes? am i doing something wrong?”

you know what i deserve?
@yutoxrk
the moment may have passed for the dessert challenge, yet it had remained on chaewon’s list of choreo to tackle. she may not be the most knowledgeable about idols, but everyone knows chi chi’s a-zi is a queen, especially in the dance world. thankfully, one of her dance colleagues was still up to learning the dance with her.
“this song makes me hungry,” chaewon complains, dropping onto her butt after a run-through of the intro. chocolate candy fruit, honey butter waffle and... it makes her want to pig out on sugar, and she has brought some sweet snacks for the occasion: a plate of assorted cookies from siyeon’s bakery, much better than the ones chaewon scorched to oblivion not so long ago.
she scoots across the floor to grab her backpack and digs out the plate, then holds it up in the air like a trophy. “surprise!” she yells, eyes scrunched tight as she smiles. it’s partly a balm for her own sugar cravings, and partly a token of appreciation to the guy for partnering up with her. plus maybe a dash of flirtation, because she can never resist. “want a cookie, yuto oppa? there’s like ten different flavors.”

moonlight.
there’s a dance competition show that chaewon just has to see the finale of, so she’s staying up late. she’s camped out on one of the sofas in the living room, sprawled out and cozy in sweats with a bowl of popcorn in her lap. it’s well past midnight, and she’s caught herself nodding off several times during the commercial breaks, but she wants to see this live.
behind the giant flatscreen, all is dark and quiet. a wind blows gently through the trees beyond the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. but eventually, the night is pierced by yellow headlights. it’s kwon sangil, ceo of kon industries. chaewon’s father. the valet is returning him home at almost 2 am. nothing unusual.
fixated on the screen, chaewon doesn’t turn around when she hears the front door click shut and her father’s heavy footsteps lurching through the kitchen. when he turns the corner, she finally glances up, mouth full of popcorn. he looks a bit worse for wear, hair messy, top buttons of his shirt undone. probably out drinking and shooting the shit with the other top execs again. nothing unusual. sangil stands there and stares; it’d be creepy, he’d look like a serial killer, if it were anyone else.
“welcome home, father,” chaewon calls out casually, lifting a hand from the popcorn bowl to give a tiny wave.
“chaewon...” he mumbles, leaning on the counter with his left hand and rubbing at his face with the right. “what are you doing up so late?”
“just watching something.” she shrugs, leaning back into the soft grey suede.
“well...” a long pause, then he rolls his shoulders. “don’t stay up too late.” and with those parting words, kwon sangil shuffles off into the dark hallway, probably to roll into bed next to his wife and pass out. oh, the life of a top businessman. chaewon can’t help but snort. how typical.
the show finally ends, and the person she was rooting for most came in second place, so it’s about an adequate result. she flicks the power button on the remote, stands up, stretches, and heads to the kitchen to leave the bowl in the sink. the housekeeper will take care of it in the morning.
as she’s heading off to bed, chaewon runs her fingers over the counter and catches something between them. a gossamer thread. she lifts it up in the moonlight to inspect it. it’s a hair. a long hair. hers? no, it looks more blonde. hmm. her sleepy mind is too mushy to analyze this, and by the morning she’ll have forgotten all about it. she lets it fall to the cold stone floor and heads up the stairs. tomorrow, she’ll be lucky if she catches a glimpse of her dad between his work schedule and her rushing off to dance practice. another typical day in the kwon household.

carbon cookies.
siyeonrk:
she’d only suggested muffins for their simplicity; siyeon certainly wouldn’t mind making something more exciting with chaewon in her own time. even if they spent the entire day baking, it’d be time well-spent in her eyes. any time in the kitchen not foraging for late night snacks is valuable to her, but she doesn’t say anything. doubling down on how it isn’t a big deal always makes it feel like it is — like her kindness isn’t genuine.
“we can make whatever kind of muffins you want; they’re for you, after all!” she smiles, her eyes wrinkling and her cheeks rosy. “bran would be good, though. now that you mention it, it’s been a while since I’ve made muffins that aren’t sweet. I made a ridiculous amount of cinnamon ones last christmas, and I’ll probably do it again this year. they seem to go down well in the winter.”
she hums at the sudden question. a quick glance around the bakery confirms her suspicions — they’re the only ones here, really, and there’s a couple other staff members who can easily cover the counter should anyone come in, so why not? “sure! I don’t think my manager will mind, as long as we don’t burn anything.” she giggles. “we should have everything we need; we stay well stocked.”
siyeon is already cute, but the clear passion in her eyes when she talks about baking makes her even cuter. speaking of muffins, it makes chaewon want to roll her into a ball and bite into her. she’d probably taste like strawberries.
“ooh! i remember those.” the cinnamon muffins were great, perfect with a hot coffee. chaewon had nibbled on more than one while dashing to and fro picking up christmas gifts. “yes, you should bring those back. or maybe peppermint chocolate or something. whatever you do, it’ll be good, right? you’re the master baker, after all.”
once siyeon gives her assent, chaewon gleefully zips around behind the counter. “oh, sweet. show me all your cool equipment and stuff.” just glancing into the kitchen, there’s so many baking appliances that it makes her head spin. that must be what it takes to keep a pastry case stocked 7 days a week. “if we do burn something, just blame it on me. it’ll probably be my fault anyway. you know what, you can just handle all the hot stuff. i think i can mix ingredients without causing a disaster. maybe.”

not those shots…
rkbxlla:
Oh, how she could sympathise with the girl beside her. No, this was not her ideal afternoon either, in fact, Bella does not know who exactly would consider taking a flu shot a pleasurable pass time. Perhaps the nurses and doctors who have to administer it, for the simplicity of the actual procedure. Not to get her wrong, she fully appreciates the professionals more so when they have to do something so mundane to the layman’s eyes.
“Yup and yup.” Chuckling under her breath as she offers the other girl a knowing smile. Her gaze following the information screen, making Bella instantly wonder if they had any of those ‘good food’ back at home. Biting her lower lip as she suddenly realized she doesn’t actually remember the last time she did grocery shopping.
“Some pain comes with pleasure.” Bella instantly wincing as soon those words slip her lips because good God her filter has evidently left her the moment she entered that clinic. Another reason why she doesn’t fancy the place at all. “Sorry about that,” clearing her throat, “but suppose you’re right there are definitely better ways of spending the afternoon. I remember seeing some health brochures by the reception, reckon it’s worth a look into?”
some pain comes with pleasure. chaewon has to shoot a quick side-eye at that. the weirdos always seem to find her... but judging by the quick apology, that’s not the case this time. so she chuckles instead, diffusing any awkwardness that had entered the room. “man, you don’t even know. if i had the choice i’d be sitting on the beach right now with a watermelon and...” she huffs. “well, i guess i can fantasize later.”
at the mention of health brochures, she rolls her eyes. “yeah, i just might be that desperate. find out if i’m a candidate for spleen surgery or whatever.” the reading material is pretty dry, but if she keeps watching this looping video she’s going to go insane. and her cell phone reception sucks in here, otherwise she’d just be on instagram. “at the office i usually go to they have vogue, harper’s bazaar, all the good stuff. i can’t say i’m impressed with this one so far. you come here a lot?”

spicy.
rkyoojimin:
“Oh, it went fine,” Céleste waved her hand, “at least I think so… Katie’s super pretty in real life, even better than in her pictures,” she gushed. “But really, that’s pretty much all I remember.” Throwing back her hair and fanning her face, she added, “I think I was too nervous to remember anything other than that the building looks super super cool inside. Hey, maybe if I pass I could drag you to see for yourself!” She sighed. “Too bad they didn’t call you back. Maybe next time?”
Chaewon was one of the girls Céleste met often whenever she and her family visited Korea. She forgot how their parents knew each other, but what she did know was that they hit it off instantly, despite them barely meeting each other all that often. The girl had invited Céleste to film a mukbang of some sort, as well as to catch up on each other’s lives. And whenever food was in the equation, Céleste was in.
Eyes staring at the menu plastered on the wall of the restaurant, Céleste was pretty lost. Just how spicy was their spicy? She nodded along to Chaewon’s words, digesting them a bit. And though she by no means was good with handling spicy food, Céleste had way too much pride to decline the offer (or rather challenge as she saw it). “I don’t see why not, let’s go for it then!”
She was going to have a lot of fun.
“ugh, that’s not fair,” chaewon said, regarding KT’s ceo and her mystically good looks. “i can only hope i look that good at her age. i mean, i guess that’s what plastic surgery is for, right?” she jokes, stirring her straw around in her glass of ice water. “yeah, it’s no big deal. i wasn’t expecting to hear anything from them anyway. those big companies are ridiculously choosy.”
her mouth is already watering at the thought of those spicy noodles, and not entirely because of their deliciousness. there’s a bit of fear mixed in there, too. but chaewon was never the type to back down from a challenge. spicy noodles, bungee jumping, scuba diving, whatever. she’d do it. “alright!” she pounds her little fist on the table, determined. “if it gets too spicy, you can always rinse the noodles off a little bit. i don’t know if that’ll save your taste buds, though.” but, having made her mind, she flags down the server and places the order. it’ll surely be more than enough for both of them, even with their appetites.
she takes a sip of her water, eyeing her companion curiously. “so i’m guessing you’re sticking around in seoul for a while, then, since you’re auditioning for companies and all that.” chaewon leans back in her chair. “i just graduated, but i’m taking the year off to focus on my dancing. maybe next year i’ll go to university overseas or something. it’d be nice to roam around the world a bit.” although she had plenty of opportunities to travel, she’d never actually lived somewhere else. she was rather jealous of jimin, in that way.

chaewon doesn’t want to admit it, but she’s nervous. as a little kid she used to run around the room screaming in terror when the doctor would come at her with a needle. her mother had to hold her down just to get her to stay still. since then she’s gotten better at putting on a brave face - a lot better - but that fear still exists, deep down.
she glances over at the stranger who spoke to her and she can’t help but pout. “yeah. you too, hmm? isn’t it a bummer?” chaewon huffs, looking up at the flatscreen that’s displaying a looping stream of health information. eating a healthy diet is important, who could have guessed. “i’m really not fond of shots, but who is? pain is not my idea of a fun afternoon. they don’t even have any good magazines here.”
「 not those shots… 」
starter for @rkchay
‘I can’t believe you are making me do this. Isn’t it a bit too late.’ She adds a few eye-roll emojis as she continued to spam her older brother from the waiting room of the clinic. The older Son wanted her to drop by the clinic and get her shots. Something about spending an intense amount training and adjusting from her normal lifestyle.
He wasn’t wrong, of course, but it was just too tedious for her to do. Olivia has tried to put this off as much as she can but then he threatened to stick their grandmother to her, now that’s something she can never deal with. She’s been waiting for almost an hour now and it’s come to the point that the old ladies next to her has become friends, in a mild attempt for entertainment she turns the girl next to her. “Flu shots?”

mi casa.
mina laughs at the mention of convex and the number of members that the group had. “the more members, the more fascinating their choreography looks, right?” she says with a grin. “honestly, yeah. i started stanning them with their original thirteen members. but there’s been a lot of lineup changes since then.” she wants to mention how the number of members leaving makes her sad, but thankfully the new lineup change was something that rang close to the original number despite different people. not to mention, her bias is in their current lineup…
the mention of k.arma comes up next and she nods in agreement over the girl’s comment on them. “they’re super cool,” she answers excitedly. “my bias is mona, but i went to kil’s modelling class and she’s an amazing dancer. i’m honestly super inspired by her, to be honest.” her tone when saying that is bashful, but she doesn’t hide her shame. anything to show her pride for her favorite girl group ever.
“got you” she says, already grabbing her phone out to do just that task. she’s covered two songs already by the boy group, so she’s confident she can be able to find another song that the both of them could do that they haven’t done yet. she tries her best to not act too awkward to chaewon. though it’s hard, considering she couldn’t help but be a little intimidated by the way the house looked. she looks up when chaewon says something else and smiles. bold of her to assume she can do all of that. mina wishes! “i’m actually not the most flexible person,” she answers bashfully. “but i know a bit of waaking, but i’m not too good at it. maybe we can try finding a way to get that into the choreo? maybe?” her tone raises as she says the last word, but she hopes the younger doesn’t notice.
“oh, totally. the choreo looks amazing with all those bodies. i guess it’s just harder for anyone to stand out that way. i mean, some of those big groups can’t give lines to everyone, and then you might as well be a backup dancer if you’re not even singing.” chaewon rolls her eyes. though she’s not sure if it applies to convex or not, it’s a sentiment she’s seen expressed by various idol fans. “like, if i were in a group that big, i’d be doing everything i could to get screentime. pushing the members off stage if i have to,” she jokes with an exaggerated sweep of the arm.
after browsing through a few of k.arma’s dance videos, she holds up her phone to mina. “i think dolls could be adapted to two people well. see how they mirror each other here and there?” a manicured nail points to the screen. “some of the moves are pretty simple but we could build on that and add our own stuff.”
at the admission that mina isn’t the “most flexible,” she crinkles up her nose and snickers. “oh, that’s nothing a little yoga can’t fix, i bet!” being flexible is pretty important for dancers, but it’s not the end of the world or anything. “yeah! we could put some waaking into the routine. i’ll let you take the spotlight there and maybe i’ll throw a flip in at the end.”

carbon cookies.
if siyeon could eat them regardless, she would, but she gets the feeling that even if she offers, chaewon will insist otherwise. honestly, siyeon is truly flattered — a lot more than she expected herself to be. if you want to treat someone like this, it’s painfully easy to just grab a box from a supermarket shelf and stick a bow on the top. it isn’t that a bought baked gift isn’t sincere, but something handmade just has so much more weight to it whether it’s a masterpiece or a disaster. maybe siyeon’s a little biased because she does this almost every day, but the extra effort goes a long way — and it’s fun.
“who said that? and who said you have to do it all alone? we should bake together some day.” she smiles, eyes wrinkling at the corners. if her and jeno can manage to pull of her valentine maracons despite all the distractions, anything is possible. besides, everything is more enjoyable with a friend. “maybe we can try muffins. they’re pretty quick; less than an hour usually.”
she hums, eyes widening at her comment. the real thing? she’s a little jealous — not only because she’s never had authentic cannoli from italy, but also because she’s never seen italy at all. with her parents’ more humble riches, you’d think she was a little better travelled than most, but they had always left her in her grandparents’ care when they jetted off somewhere. she didlive in england for a couple years, but that’s not really the same. after all, she was trapped inside her school’s grounds most of the time. “oh, wow. no pressure, huh? of course you can have one, but go easy on me, okay?”
“oh?” the offer to bake together really piques chaewon’s interest. if she actually had siyeon’s help, she’d want to tackle something grandiose. but keeping it simple is probably the best way to start, she begrudgingly admits. “yeah, we can make muffins! as long as they’re not too sweet. maybe like a bran muffin or something.”
"yay!” she claps her hands together excitedly and grabs a cannoli as soon as they’re offered up. the crunch and the taste are ridiculously indulgent. “mmmm. wow, talk about the benefits of being your friend,” chaewon says through the mouthful of sweetness. it’s definitely different from the ones she remembers having in italy - dishes always seem to change in translation when hopping borders - but there’s no denying that it’s amazing. “i’ll have to call it a tie,” she jokes. “it’s really good!
“so...” she leans on the counter, propping up her head as she finishes the snack. “if you have the stuff on hand, do you want to try making muffins now? the sooner i can forget about that mistake, the better,” chaewon says, pushing the plate of cookies away with a curled lip.

mi casa.
the house is definitely more impressive than what she herself was used to. it was hard not to find herself gawking at everything the moment around she steps in chaewon’s house. it was kind of hard not to when everything around looked amazing. even the cook was someone to gawk at and as she passes her with a small wave and tiny bow. she’s not hungry, but there’s no doubt in her mind that lady can cook anything.
she sits on the same couch chaewon sat and smiles back at her. she was right. there is a lot of room to practice. though her house has enough to practice and do a video, she will admit that she could practically fantasize about living in a place like this. but she keeps those thoughts internal as she nods her head in agreement.
it always excited her when she’s asked to do collabs, so just being here to brainstorm w chaewon excited her in general. “ah, i have a few ideas,” she states. “mm… recently i’ve been listening to a lot of convex’s mini-album. i really liked pretty u and i liked luxe’s and k.arma’s comeback as well! so we could also do something with that.” she realizes she’s getting a tad bit too excited over her favorites, so she calms herself down. “ah, but those are just suggestions. i’m really up for anything!”
“convex, huh? yeah, i’ve heard pretty u,” chaewon says with a lazy nod. “you a fan of them? i always wondered how people can get into such huge groups. my attention span falls off after four or five members.” she snickers. “it’s honestly impressive how people can remember all those names and faces. plus the ones who joined and the ones who left. and then those girl groups in japan with like a hundred members? forget about it.”
although it’s hard to wrap her mind around it, it is kind of interesting to hear about the idol world from someone who’s more into it. “yeah! k.arma are cool!” sitting up straight, chaewon claps her hands excitedly. “i went to doyeon’s modeling class. she’s gorgeous as heck. their songs are, like, so great. maybe we can do one of those,” she says with a waggle of her eyebrows.
“okay, so, i’m gonna look up k.arma’s dance videos, and maybe you can find something from convex.” chaewon leans back into the soft couch and pulls up youtube on her phone. she glances at mina from the corner of her eye. new friends often seem a little stiff when they come over, and there’s not much she can do about it. to them it’s some palace, but to her it’s just home. she just wants to make sure mina’s comfortable. “oh, and forgot to mention, if you have any cool tricks you want to show off, like doing a flip or whatever, we should put that in the choreography too.”

eye contact.
juhee isn’t good with new places. in fact, she abhorred them entirely. but alas, it came with being an idol, she guesses, being introduced to new and exciting things was just something she would have to get used to. ( it was unfortunate that juhee was absolutely disagreeable with change ) so, it is through no fault of her own, that she finds herself lost in the masses of a new building when they’re out for a schedule. though, if she were to admit faults, one would be that she didn’t take seulgi’s invitation to tag along with her lest she got lost on the way back – because lo and behold, out of sheer luck, here she was: lost.
but she walks, confident as could be – head held high – because of where she was. the immaculate smile on her face as she proceeds forward, as if she knew where she would end – like she was supposed to be here. as false of a confidence if any, juhee thinks.
but that confidence falters in a snap as familiarity swarms through her vision and she’s left with the sudden taste of acid in her mouth. were her eyes deceiving her or – what was she doing here?
the features of a girl much like her own and not like it at all comes into view and she stops where she stands. again, juhee wonders how this could be.
she shakes, internally at the sight of the other advancing towards her. oh no – she’s been spotted. did the other know she was staring? did the other girl know who juhee was? all the imaginable worst-case scenarios begin to aggregate in the span of seconds; each one worse than the last until she hears the foreign stagename rolls through the other’s tongue and juhee isn’t sure whether she should relieve the breath she was holding or pass out from fright.
it is enough to shake some of the nerves off –
“ah – yes.” she nods, her smile once more is donned on her face – faulted composure once more slipped into place as if nothing had happened. nothing did happen – is how juhee thinks of it as the other girl speaks to her in kind. “that’s me.” she lets out a small laugh, something to ease her nerves.
maybe she was in the clear – maybe juhee was thinking too hard. ( it wasn’t like the other girl had ever seen juhee like juhee had seen the other before )
aren’t you my sister? her wits want to ask – the darker side of her desires wish to lash out but her smile tightens. “are you a fan?” she asks instead.
honestly, chaewon wouldn’t have been surprised if sora just ignored her entirely and walked away. that was the expected outcome. celebrities have better things to do than talk to randoms, especially when they’re supposed to be working. but the fact that she acknowledges her, speaks to her and confirms who she is, is a total jackpot.
she looks kind of uncomfortable for a second, though, right before she breaks out that winning idol-smile. maybe it was chaewon’s imagination. she’ll try not to waste too much of her time. she matches sora’s expression with a beaming, mouse-toothed smile.
“a fan? yeah, i guess you could say that.” she hasn’t been following and*roma for very long, truth be told. she’s only started really researching idols since it got into her head that it might be a career path for her. but out of the members she’s learned, sora definitely caught her eye. there’s just something about her. maybe because she’s new to the group, chaewon finds her relatable? something like that.
“i have to admit, i’m kind of new to the whole scene. but! i’ve been following you on instagram for a little while.” she tilts her head, posing a somewhat bold question. “if you have time - i mean, if it’s allowed and stuff - maybe we could take a picture together? that would be soooo cool. or like, if not, maybe just an autograph or something. i understand if not though.”

carbon cookies.
she should probably feel a little shame at how big her ego gets when her friends ask her for help with baking. she’s never considered herself talented at anything else, so she justifies it by arguing that it’s all she has to offer so of course, she should feel proud. truthfully, it’s just a need for validation she doesn’t want to think too deeply into ever, let alone now, with miserable-looking charcoal cookies on chaewon’s baking tray and an equally sad pout tugging at her lips.
“don’t worry about it; it’s the thought that counts. besides, I’m sure you prepared them really well! it’s easy for things to go awry in the oven; I still burn things all the time.” she tries her best to comfort her a little, but she worries her words come across insincere. it isn’t the case at all, but she’s never been the best at expressing herself. “it was a really sweet thought, chaewon. thank you, really.” she smiles, her eyes wrinkling at the corners. “as for stock, it depends what you’re up for! maybe not cookies, but we have muffins! and pastries! I just made a fresh batch of cannoli.”
chaewon musters a small smile at siyeon’s comforting words, although she knows they’re not 100% true. siyeon is a professional who can surely avoid any baking disaster, and chaewon is an amateur, entirely to blame for her own missteps. well, it’s not like she has to cook or bake for herself anyway, thanks to the talents of her family’s personal chef. considering that, she’ll give herself a pat on the back for even trying. “if i can’t even pull off a recipe as simple as that, i guess making macarons and meringues and all that is out of the question,” she says, poking at the burnt cookies with a disdainful expression.
“you’re welcome, unnie. next time i’ll make something better,” she promises with a thumbs-up. listening to siyeon describe what’s in stock, her eyes go wide. “cannolis! oh my god, can i have one?” it had been a long time since she’d had one of those crispy, creamy treats. in fact...
“the last time i had a cannoli was in italy,” chaewon says, thinking back to that vacation a few years ago. she waggles her eyebrows playfully at siyeon. “i wanna compare your creation to the real thing. not that yours aren’t real, but, well. you know what i mean.”

“i can’t believe you got a callback! you lucky little minx,” chaewon says, affectionately slapping the younger girl’s shoulder. “how’d the audition go, anyway? tell me everything you’re legally allowed to.”
these hole-in-the-wall places have better food than most of the fancy restaurants she’s been dragged along to, chaewon thinks. she did a vlog here at this noodle spot once. the owner, a nice old lady, seemed thankful for the exposure. but now she just comes here because the food is actually really good. and, with jimin in tow, maybe she can actually finish one of their massive plates this time.
“last time i had the super spicy ramyeon,” chaewon says, eyes roaming over the massive menu printed on the wall. it’s pretty simple, mostly just getting spicier as it goes. “and it was HOT! like, i thought my taste buds were going to fall off! but i kind of want to try the fiery death ramyeon now.” she points at the very bottom of the menu, where everything is bright red and marked with a skull and crossbones. “i dunno. are you in the mood for spicy?”

star bright interview (20/06/28 - pic credit )
"little to no makeup.” alright, chaewon can reluctantly comply with that. she gets it; these star bright people are looking for real beauty, not something hidden beneath ten layers of product. it’s a shame she can’t be a little more flashy, make a real impression. but she does her best to rock the understated makeup and dark navy tee that she picked out for the occasion, running her fingers through her loose dark-brown hair over and over.
her eyes flick curiously around the waiting area, scoping out the other hopefuls. so, the raw material from which stars are made... doesn’t look much different from any other crowd of young people in seoul. there are a few faces that stand out-- chaewon squints, trying to recognize one that looks slightly familiar. an ex-idol looking for another shot? she’s prettier than pretty, that’s for sure.
she makes a little small talk with those around, swinging her legs as she waits, and her turn comes a bit sooner than expected. good thing she’s a naturally energetic person-- and the iced americano she’d sipped on the way here only added to it. the bright lights in the filming area make her blink a little, but she’s soon fresh-faced and camera-ready with a squirrel-cheeked smile.
“my name is kwon chaewon, age 18. i just graduated high school and i’m taking some time off to develop as a dancer before starting university!” she bows her head, then raises it, her hair flipping behind her back.
why do you want to be an idol?
“ah... i think it would be a great way to express myself. and a fun career. i’m an outgoing person. i’d like to connect with people and show my talents.” she nods with conviction. “i’ve been dancing all my life, so i know it’s hard. and fun!”
so your best skill is...
“dancing, yeah,” chaewon says with a quick laugh. “i’ve pretty much tried every style, but my main thing is hip-hop. lately i’ve been learning some cheer moves, and uh... i also tumble!” she wiggles her eyebrows.
and what do you think you need to improve on?
“um...” she purses her lips and looks to the side, thinking. “i don’t have too much experience singing. i don’t think i’m a bad singer or anything, it’s just not something i’ve practiced much. but i TOTALLY will.” chaewon laughs sheepishly.
have you ever tried to rap?
“uh, a little bit, i think.” does it count if you’re rapping along to songs at the noraebang and making a fool of yourself? chaewon clears her throat, then attempts a quick bar of k.arma’s news: “news of breaking up... is finally here, oops...” she accentuates the performance with a few hip-hop hand gestures, but she can’t keep a straight face for long. she cracks up. “ah, sorry.”
what’s the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome so far?
chaewon blanks. “uhh... hmm.” she has to admit to herself, she hasn’t faced many obstacles in life. going where she wants to go, doing what she wants to do... if anything, the only thing that’s stood in her way is... “i guess it would be me. sometimes i don’t go after all the opportunities that i get. but. i’m going after this one,” she says, clapping her hands together firmly.
what’s your family like?
“ah... we’re just a typical family, i guess. i’m an only child. dad’s always busy with work and mom’s always busy with her social life,” chaewon says, with an illustrative flick of her badminton wrist. “but they’re supportive. really supportive of what i do. i know they’d be proud if i became an idol.”
if not an idol, what career path will you pursue?
“it’s gotta be something involving dancing! i mean, i gotta make use of my skills, right? otherwise, i guess i’d look into fashion. i like doing makeup, putting together outfits... i dunno about modeling, but i might take a shot at design.” she nods vigorously.
and like that, the initial interview is over. chaewon is thanked for her time and she returns the thanks, then skips out of the room on light feet. as she bounces down the hall, she wonders if she’ll receive a callback. if not? well, that’d be a huge bummer, but it’s not the end of the world, she tells herself. the universe places opportunities where it will.
