When it comes to acoustic design, it can be difficult to comprehend. For starters acoustics are a challenge for both architects and designers. Acoustics involves all aspects of design and many factors need to be taken into account to avoid a multitude of issues. Architects must take into consideration factors such as room size, room finishes, wall and floor construction and mechanical/electrical services to name just a few. Breaking it Down
No space is the same and architects strive to design buildings which are unique, attractive and functional. With that said, acoustical solutions within a building are not the same as the next. For example, if HVAC noise is not addressed during design, a newly constructed building could have excessive sound levels that do not allow for the space to be used for its intended purpose. In highly reflective spaces without sound absorption, people have great difficulty hearing and understanding conversation with others at their table. When going through the process of noise impact assessments, there are a few key focuses. The main aspect is ensuring the noise levels in the facility are compliant with regulations and guidelines. To ensure your facility is ready for an audit, consider working with a noise assessment consultant to ensure success. The audit process consists of steps including:
ECA and Acoustic Assessment Report
In Ontario, all industrial operations need to obtain approval from the Ministry of Environment, Conservations and Parks (MECP). Subject to your NAICS code, you either need to obtain an Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) or register in the Environmental Activity and Sector Registry (EASR). As part of the application an Acoustic Assessment Report (AAR of noise report) is included to support the submission. If noise mitigation is required, a Noise Abatement Action Plan (NAAP) is included. The NAAP will outline the noise mitigation measures and any operational restrictions that are required. How Vibrations Affect Structures and People

Defining Vibrations
Vibrations are motions that can affect structures and people. There are different types of vibrations. Periodic vibrations are defined as oscillatory motion with a repetitive motion. Random vibrations are instantaneous and occur at different times that are not predictable. Vibrations can occur anywhere from a multitude of sources. Construction is a common example of activities that can result in vibration frequencies. The use of generators, jackhammers, and drills can cause waves of vibrations. Transportation services, specifically train activity, can induce higher vibration levels. High vibration levels can impact structures and potentially cause damage. To avoid hazards and damage from occurring, vibration monitoring can be an effective way to ensure the safety of people and structures.
How Vibrations Can Affect Structures
In 1940, the Tacoma Narrows bridge in Washington collapsed as a result of vibration. The suspension bridge was designed without thought of how wind can cause high torsional oscillations. The wind reached up to 40 mph when it collapsed. The vibrations that caused the collapse have been heavily studied. When structures are being built, many contractors are now required to have a third party complete construction vibration monitoring to reduce the risk of potential structural damage from their activities to the neighbouring properties. Long term unattended vibration monitoring can also bring awareness of imbalances and misalignments. Building Services Noise Mitigation in the Design Process

A building’s basic utilities include electrical service, lighting, plumbing, heating/cooling and air handling systems. Of these utilities, air handling and plumbing are the two that present more wide ranging for possible noise and vibration problems, with the air handling distribution system being the more dominant. Noise From Pipes
Plumbing systems can produce and transmit noise throughout a building. A metal pipe, as well as the fluid within the pipe, are good conductors of sound, and there was a time when tenants of old buildings would communicate with the building superintendent by banging on their radiator. This was a signal that they wanted more heat, and the banging could be heard ten floors below, in the boiler room. The musical group The Pointer Sisters immortalized this method in their song, “Banging On The Pipes.” Sometimes a building’s plumbing produces noise of its own, and this is almost always due to pipes that are not securely mounted or acoustically isolated at the point of attachment to the building walls or floors. Combining ‘Open Concept’ Architecture and Acoustic Design

Open-concept architecture seeks to create airy, soaring spaces. Fewer walls and barriers can eliminate a claustrophobic, stuffy, or isolated feeling. Open designs make a space feel bigger and lighter, and who wouldn’t want that? It sounds great.
Except it doesn’t sound great. Such spaces are frequently designed without any input from acoustical consultants, often with troubling results. Let’s examine the main design factors that go into open-concept architecture.
Room Volume
As any acoustic consultant in Toronto can tell you, the amount of reverberation within a space is the factor that most defines a room’s acoustical character. Reverberation is the buildup of sound energy due to the bouncing around of sound waves as they strike various hard surfaces. If a sound wave strikes a hard, reflective surface, it is largely reflected back out into the room as reverberation. If it strikes a soft, absorbent surface, it is mostly absorbed.

It features expansive glass and marble vistas, with windows stretching from lobby floor to third-floor ceiling.
