Here Are All Six Things the 2019 GMC Sierra’s Wild MultiPro Tailgate Can Do
–
The major news from GMC’s unveiling of the new 2019 Sierra pickup truck included the announcement of a turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six and a bed that incorporates carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic paneling. But the flashiest, coolest, and most fun part of the new Sierra is the MultiPro tailgate, which smartly incorporates various built-in hinges to help with ingress and egress, load stopping, second-tier loading, and access to the bed. Allow us to explain how it all works.
–
GMC touts the MultiPro’s six different functions, but that includes the normal up-and-down movement of the whole tailgate, so, um, okay. It’s damped for slow opening, which can be done by hand or by two clicks on the remote.
–
–
Within the full tailgate is a secondary cutout that extends to within a few inches of either side and stops at the space just below the large GMC logo. On the inside of this cutout is another flap that can hinge up and out toward the rear of the truck. With the tailgate folded down, that inside flap can be deployed in various ways, including as a stopper for an extended load.
–
–
Technically, there is no physical tailgate handle. The operations are controlled by two buttons that are stacked in between two camera lenses, where you would expect a conventional release. Press only the top button, and the main tailgate remains closed, while the small cutout (which GMC calls the inner gate) hinges down via two swing arms and stops parallel to the ground to make a tablelike standing workspace. In this configuration, the back flap can be unfolded to act as a load stopper for extended second-tier loading above the wheel wells. As an example, GMC cited large sheets of plywood above other cargo.
–
–
The inner gate serves other functions as well. Press the bottom button to let the tailgate down, then press the top button to let the cutout down. This allows people to step into the space where the tailgate normally is, and it gives users easier access to the bed for loading or unloading cargo.
–
–
Taking it one step further, the aforementioned flap can be unfolded while both the tailgate and the cutout are let down, creating a stairway into the bed (it can take up to 375 pounds of human weight). In this position, the main part of the tailgate can be used as a place to sit with a footrest, and the sides of the main gate even have “cupholder” indents.

–
The final piece of this do-everything package is not part of the tailgate itself. GMC attached a black handle bar to the driver’s side of the inner bed, which stows in a vertical position. Unlock the bar from the bottom, and it hinges at the top, eventually locking in a diagonal position (not pictured). This provides a convenient handhold to aid those stepping up into the bed of the truck.
–
–
The whole thing is pretty cool, seems extremely well thought out, and should be quite useful. The MultiPro tailgate is standard on both SLT and Denali models, the only trim levels GMC has revealed so far. We’re guessing it could be offered as an option on less pricey models, but the company won’t talk about those yet. Those who are still skeptical can try it out in person when the 2019 GMC Sierra hits dealerships in the fall.

The HD Diesel Pickup Has Attained a Level of Beastliness Bordering on Silly
–
At Deere & Company World Headquarters, the lawn is immaculate. The Deere complex in Moline, Illinois, is a midcentury Eero Saarinen masterpiece, low steel buildings hugging lushly forested hills. Nary a blade of grass is amiss. There sure would be, though, if they let me out of the showroom with the sweet model 648L grapple skidder that’s parked inside. With 756 pound-feet of torque and a ground-hugging weight of 39,340 pounds, that sucker could do some major damage in my hands. I know this because they have training simulators inside, and I did major virtual damage with every one of them. Next time you see a dump truck, check out the top portion of the dump bed. It’s probably all scarred up. Now I know why. As they say in the business, ’tis a fine dance betwixt bucket loader and dump truck, ’tis a fine dance, indeed. You hear that at job sites everywhere, just as sure as John Deere was founded by the man whose products still bear his name: Mr. Bob Tractor. READ MORE ››

Name Gamer: Sport-Replacing 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Driven!
-When the fourth generation of the Hyundai Santa Fe goes on sale at the end of 2018, the brand will be well on its way to completely relaunching its entire SUV lineup—although this revamp comes with a little confusion. This new Santa Fe is effectively a replacement for the outgoing Santa Fe Sport. Today’s longer-wheelbase Santa Fe will continue for one more model year, rechristened the Santa Fe XL, until a new three-row SUV under a new name debuts for the 2020 model year. Along with the new Kona and fuel-cell Nexo, there will be a new Tucson and a smaller-than-Kona crossover by 2021, too. If you’re counting, that’s six new or redesigned SUVs in half as many years. 2019 Genesis G70 Will Have a Stick-Shift Option in Canada—What aboot the U.S., Eh?
–
Surprise! The upcoming Genesis G70 sports sedan, the one bent on taking the nascent luxury brand’s fight to BMW, will offer a stick-shift option. At least, it will in Canada, per Genesis’s own preorder website for the G70, which we’re taking as a good indication that it will also be available in the United States.
–
The Genesis Canada-market website currently displays preorder information for the G70 that includes trim level details and the tidbit about the manual transmission. The stick is only available on the 2.0T Sport trim with rear-wheel drive; translated from Genesis-speak, 2.0T means turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The Sport’s goodies list is long and includes a limited-slip rear differential, Brembo brakes, a head-up display, 19-inch wheels with summer tires, and 16-way power front seats. All-wheel-drive G70s and those with the available twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 (3.3T, in case you needed help) all use an eight-speed automatic transmission.

–
The lack of the same information on the U.S. website is probably because the upcoming 2018 New York auto show is supposed to be the U.S.-market G70’s big reveal. (So far, the car has only been shown officially in Korea-market guise.) We reached out to Genesis for clarity, but its spokesperson had no comment, although we did report in September 2017 that the U.S. Genesis team had requested the 2.0T/manual combo, perhaps only for the first model year. So consider the Canada news a soft confirmation that the G70 may do its small part to Save the Manuals when it goes on sale here in the United States.

Detroit-Built Mahindra Roxor Off-Road Vehicle Revealed: Is This the Mini Jeep We Need?
–
While side-by-side vehicles continue to reshape the ATV landscape, segment newcomer Mahindra is making a play for buyers seeking a more traditional all-purpose utility vehicle. In other words, check out this sweet mini Jeep.
–
–
Okay, we’re being a bit facetious, but in this hemisphere, the sight of an open-top steel body with an upright grille and flattop fenders on a boxed ladder frame with four-by-four capability makes Jeep comparisons inevitable. Considering that the Indian automaker got its start by importing and later building Willys Jeeps under license after World War II, the similarities should come as little surprise. Car dorks of the sort that populate the C/D offices will be quick to point out that the Roxor resembles the megarare Alfa Romeo 1900M Matta 4×4; those with truly arcane tastes will name-check the Crosley Farm-O-Road. By the looks of the dimensions below, the Roxor’s 148-inch length–including the spare tire–puts it in league with the approximately 139-inch long Jeep CJ7. Mahindra said the base curb weight is 3035 pounds.
–
–
Similarly, the Roxor’s powertrain is about as conventional as they come; forgoing the CVT and belt-drive setup favored by many ATVs, the Roxor uses a heavy-duty Mahindra turbo-diesel 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 62 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission routes torque to a Dana T18 two-speed transfer case, and 3.73 gears spin in full-floating front and rear axles suspended on leaf springs. There are 9.0-inch disc brakes in the front and 11.0-inch drums in the back. Ground clearance is 9.0 inches. The 16-inch wheels (steel is standard, while aluminum rims are optional) are wrapped in 235/70R-16 tires. Top speed is limited to 45 mph, Mahindra said, because “This is a suitable speed limit given how most consumers are likely to be using the vehicle.” The maker claims preliminary fuel economy results of 32 to 34 mpg and gives a maximum tow rating of 3490 pounds.
–
–
Mahindra managing director Pawan Goenka said the Roxor remains true to the company’s legacy of “authentic, rugged, purpose-driven vehicles” and that it will be built with durability in mind. The maker hasn’t yet revealed any pricing information, but does note that the Roxor is classified as an off-highway vehicle. How that will play into legalities regarding licensing, insurance and on-road use, as with golf carts and ATVs, will be determined mostly by local rules and regulations.

Conceived, designed, engineered and produced in Metro Detroit, the Roxor is the maker’s first foray into the consumer ATV market. Previously in the news for its purchase of storied design house Pininfarina and its U.S. Postal Service vehicle prototype, Mahindra Automotive North America will build the Roxor at its recently opened 400,000-square-foot manufacturing center in suburban Detroit’s Auburn Hills. Mahindra is still in the process of signing up dealers, claiming it is nearing the 300 mark as of March 2, 2018. We’ve already began pestering Mahindra for a test vehicle to get an idea of just how much abuse this little Jeeplet can take.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas 2.0T FWD: Surprisingly, It’s More Than Adequate

2019 GMC Sierra: Diesel Power and Carbon-Fiber Strength
–
On the heels of the launch of the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, General Motors is shifting the focus onto its other full-size pickup, the GMC Sierra, which also is redesigned for the 2019 model year. Like the new Silverado, the Sierra is bigger, lighter, restyled, and offers a new turbo-diesel inline-six. But it also has something neither the Silverado nor any other pickup truck has: an available bed partly constructed out of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. READ MORE ››

2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata Could See 26-HP Bump to 181 Ponies
–
Mazda’s MX-5 Miata roadster has never been a car consumed with power. In fact, its distinct lack of horsepower is part of its back-to-basics sports-car appeal. The current-generation Miata actually has less output—just 155 ponies!—than the car it replaced. But Road & Track has uncovered evidence that that could soon change.
–
In an annual VIN notice sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mazda lists the 2019-model-year MX-5 Miata’s engine as a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 181 horsepower, 26 more than it has now and the most ever from a factory Miata. (The second-generation Miata’s turbocharged Mazdaspeed variant only made 178 horsepower.) How Mazda reaches that number (assuming the NHTSA filing is accurate) is the million-dollar question.
–
The NHTSA document does not specify whether the 2.0-liter engine in question is an evolution of the same Skyactiv-G unit currently in the Miata or something else, like, say, the brand’s forthcoming high-tech gas-fed supercharged, compression-ignition-capable Skyactiv-X engine. The X is slated to appear sometime in the next year or two in the next-generation Mazda 3 compact, and its preliminary output figure roughly matches the 181-hp number listed for the 2019 Miata.
–
–
On the other hand, the Skyactiv-G is sticking around throughout the Mazda lineup for the foreseeable future as the entry-level offering positioned beneath the Skyactiv-X. And Mazda has told us it will continue to develop the G going forward. As such, a 26-hp bump isn’t out of the question, assuming the G would be given better intake and exhaust plumbing and tweaks to engine internals to raise its 6800-rpm redline by a few hundred revolutions per minute. (Horsepower being calculated as a function of engine speeds and torque generally means that the faster an engine spins, the more power it’ll make.) The Skyactiv-G engine already boasts an incredibly high 13:1 compression ratio and runs on premium gasoline.

The Mazda 6 Wagon Gets Refreshed; Now Bring It to America, Please
–
Mazda MX-5 Miata Research: Pricing, Specs, Reviews, and More!
–
–
Maybe Mazda will employ a small supercharger like that fitted to the Skyactiv-X engine, or a similarly compact turbocharger, although neither is mentioned in the NHTSA filing. What is certain is that if the Miata is a blast with 155 horsepower (and also surprisingly quick, thanks to its light weight), it’ll be a full-on, Molotov-cocktail-chucking riot with 181 ponies under the hood.
–
Mazda’s document filing also reveals changes in store for the Miata’s trim-level structure. Look for the lineup to grow from Sport, Club, and Grand Touring trims (the latter two the only choices for today’s hardtop Miata RF) to include a base SV spec and a new range-topping SE (special edition in Mazda-speak)—with the RF now matching the softtop roadster trim for trim. More power and more choices? We can’t wait for 2019.
