15. Describe their ideal date. 

WOW going in for the jugular I see. I think they can be fairly low-key! haven’t had the chance to date that often so they’d be more indulgent of what their partner might want, are generally very supportive in that regard. if they have the choice, I think they also haven’t had a very consistently stable home environment, so it’d be meaningful for them to get to...have a night where they can cook something fancy with their partner. maybe sit out on the patio with them and talk into the night hours, bring them drinks or an after dinner coffee. feeling at home is very important to them so they’d prefer dates where they really get to experience that sort of domesticity with their partner!

21. If they were a potion, what would it look like? (Color, glass shape, smell, etc.)

OOOH in a heavier, thicker vial for sure, with a dark crimson wax seal at the top. the color would probably be a warmer bronze, with flecks of gold swirling when it’s held up to the light. it smells vaguely spicy,and maybe like leather and campfire smoke. 

55. How has your character’s mental health been recently?

love you asking this about a mysterious NPC. ANYWAY hmmm it was actually going pretty well until a few months ago, better than it had been in a long time. now...things are rougher, but they’re still not in the worst place they’ve ever been. ):

62. Who does your character think is the most put together in the party?

THIS DEPENDS ON THE PARTY. of the main party, it’s definitely pierce. like sure he has some anxiety but he has not put goo in his mouth unprompted. so that pulls him ahead of fyn, who would be the second choice. of the surface party...probably valytra! like sure she collects souls in her necklace but she seems Polite and like she was a Pleasure to Have in Class, plus you have to have your shit together to be a spy (theoretically). kidar is...put together in that she’s extremely confident in who she is and assured of her own place in the world, but not the typical standard for “put together,” and fyn has put goo in her mouth, so. valytra wins. 

64. What is one thing they want each party member to know?

I’m going to do main party, and out of character! 

pierce: you’re so much braver and more heroic than you give yourself credit for. you deserve your place here just as much as anyone, and have personally inspired me to be a better person. but stop side eying me about scully I am WORKING on having a realization about this!! I’ll get there maybe!

jolene: we both put up such aggressive fronts to hide our vulnerabilities, but I’m discovering it is actually helpful to let people in and care for them, even if it makes you feel exposed. I hope you’re also coming to that realization and maybe one day (IN THE VERY DISTANT FUTURE) we’ll be more honest in our own friendship but for now lmao what is going on with blacksmith girl huh. I would like an update.

fyn: you’re the most optimistic and good-hearted person I know, and I hope you can see what an effect you have on the party. I’m very glad I’ve had you at my side for pursuing the black dragon wyrmspeaker, because I don’t know how I would’ve done it alone. also please stop putting goo in your mouth, we have enough money for quiche and lavender lemonade PLEASE. 

52. If your character was under quarantine, what type of quarantine person would they be? (Productive? Hobbyist? Lazy?)

oh my god fawks in quarantine is off the rails immediately, she cannot be left unsupervised. I think she starts her own youtube channel that people LEGITIMATELY think is supposed to be like a ~found footage narrative fiction channel or other creative project but...it’s never been stated to be and she just keeps appearing in videos to talk very urgently about cryptids and show everyone how she’s converted her kitchen to include a PROPER, homemade fumigation hood. so it’s very unclear. on that note, the vlog probably comes to an end bc she either 1) blows up her kitchen with her own experiments because it is NOT a lab, or 2) breaks into someplace she shouldn’t be and isn’t caught but then uploads the footage to ye olde youtube and it’s like...okay so this is you running around fantasy area 51 right? knock it off. 

40. Describe a corruption/redemption arc version of your character.

OKAY corruption arc fawks...like we all know fawks is very, very motivated by ~discovery and has a black and white way of thinking, she’s always poised on a precipice of discovering one powerful magic artifact that makes her risk it all LOL. she’s doing some character development in that area but I think there some very clear seeds of a corruption arc there--her connection to people (such as the party) is what keeps her on the...generally okay if not exactly the Right Path, so I think something awful befalling the party/people she loves where they are all killed would push her firmly into the dark side. I can see her getting lost in pursuing a way to “undo” whatever happened with time travel magic (wow like a certain tower we encountered) instead of reconciling it, and being willing to do whatever it takes to get her way. would prioritize herself and her mission above everything and everyone else, even if it threatens to rip the universe apart or results in killing people because she knows once she discovers this magic it will set things right, not just for her but its uses for the world at large...yeah it’d be bad. :/

REDEMPTION ARC is kind of what she’s on now. she’s discovering she has worth outside of what she produces for science/magic/etc! she’s figuring out she can open up to people and ask for help sometimes! she’s putting things right for her family! things are slowly coming up fawks...maybe.

15. Describe their ideal date. 

OH BOY. fawks is not really uh...into traditional expressions of romance. like she’ll make an effort for the right person but her preference is never going to be a fancy dinner and candlelight. honestly I think the ideal date would start off in the late evening (AFTER A LONG DAY OF SCIENCE), going to a museum of curiosities or for cryptids/the arcane, where she’s allowed to really go in deep with her date on the history of various items/the theories behind everything and listen eagerly to what her date has to say too (in any world where fawks is dating, that person has to have Opinions on this type of thing). they’d stay until close and then head to a food truck to grab something to go while fawks leads the date to a rooftop of an abandoned building she likely discovered cryptid hunting but realized has an amazing view. they’d sit out under the stars and eat together, chatting inevitably about how fawks found the building, maybe do some exploring of it together. and then they head to a 24 hour diner for milkshakes as dessert!

8. What is something they cannot resist?

OOOH this is fun because there are a lot of ways to interpret the question. I think kass can never resist a bustling marketplace in whatever city he ends up in--he loves travel and finding out about the local culture, is always curious to see what’s for sale and what the gossip is about town from the merchants he meets there. he spent a lot of time in marketplaces growing up so they’re nostalgic for him--he also loves purchasing trinkets from them anytime he lands somewhere new, particularly if those trinkets are fancy scarves/boots/etc. foodwise, he’s a sucker for baklava and good red wine--he enjoys wine shops/bars over taverns because he’s bougie lmao. oh and if dancing is happening and he’s not the one playing the music, kass is involving himself as is his right as a bard. he can’t resist a good opportunity dance when he has the chance!

16. What keeps them going?

OH BOY a good question. I think kass is a realist in a lot of ways, but has held onto some amount of idealism. he keeps moving forward with the idea that he’s in a losing situation right now, but he’s patient enough to watch and see what way the winds will blow. he justifies his work with the understanding that he has a certain moral code for his behavior when he can make choices, versus when his hands are tied by the zhents. always is keeping one eye out for an opportunity to slip out of those binds completely. 

36. What makes them blush?

HMMMM I don’t think kass gets too worked up over flirting--sometimes it’s literally just part of his job, and in general he’s just confident in himself. and listen he’s been in plenty of seedy taverns and courts rifled with intrigue, so not a lot makes kass bat an eyelash at this point. the things that would make him blush would probably be genuine romantic gestures? he doesn’t have a lot of experience with them so someone doing something very sweet and thoughtful for him would catch him completely off guard. like even getting flowers from the right person, kass is just not used to that type of attention! 

42. Is there something your character isn’t very good at, but enjoys doing nonetheless?

kass would LOVE crossword puzzles I think. he’s been doing them since he was a kid and could filch a newspaper every once in a while, but he’s not super good at them. just enjoys having something to sit back and focus on while drinking his coffee in the mornings. I also don’t think he’s very good at cooking, but he enjoys trying out new recipes!

66. Outward Passion or Quiet Rebellion?

this is hard because I think kass feels pulled between the two very frequently. I think he’d much prefer outward passion, throwing himself heart first into a cause, but he definitely is more likely to commit quiet rebellion and does so frequently. like what the zhents don’t know won’t hurt...him. again, where he has the ability to, kass follows his own heart so he’s willing to work quietly to do some good. but he’d much prefer to be bolder, in the grand scheme of things.

26. who do they miss?

UP UNTIL RECENTLY this would have been sylris lol but things are on the ups there! generally though, renaer is fairly self-reliant and reserved, so he doesn’t have a large number of people in his life to miss. and obviously he has a complicated relationship with his father for ~some reason, so the only person he probably misses is his mom. ): 

33. what makes them cry?

not a lot. renaer feels emotions intensely sometimes but they’re very locked up in him. the only times he tends to cry is when he can be emotionally intimate with someone because he values that level of trust a lot and it touches him deeply. 

LEO 

13. what do they dislike about themself? why?

OOOH SPICY. I think leo is incredibly ambitious, and has a tendency to think that the ends justify the means since the work he does is so important. that being said, thinking that way doesn’t free him from worrying over the choices he’s made and whether it’s been worth it, and I think he doesn’t like that it can sometimes be so easy for him to cut off his feelings or pull back from people he cares about just because it makes the most sense...

18. do they see themself as a leader or a follower?

DEFINITELY a leader. that being said, I don’t think he...takes any particular joy out of being in charge/craves power, outright. he just feels like there is work to be done and believes he’s best suited to take care of it, since he’s the one most willing to put int he the time and effort to see it through. 

CRIMSON VIPER 

5. do they follow a higher power? what are their thoughts on divinity?

they believe in the gods (since this is d&d and they literally give people magic LOL) and can understand how they’re helpful for some people, but I think the viper doesn’t follow any particular gods personally. they believe in sort of...the inherent value of people, and their potential for doing good, and they try to live their life by that philosophy than by following any particular religion. 

19. what haunts them? what doesn’t?

CAN’T GET INTO IT bc ~lore but there are some choices they made in the past that’s affected more than just them, and they wonder what might have happened if they’d done something differently. taking money from nobles DEFINITELY does not haunt them tho lmao they sleep like a baby at night on that one.

26. who do they miss?

THIS IS A SWEET QUESTION. floon is pretty extroverted and very good at staying in touch with the people he cares about. that being said, he’s always been very close with his family, but they live on the amcathra ranch in undercliff and he doesn’t get to see them as frequently as he’d like. he still tries to go out to undercliff at least once every couple of months, but he misses them when he’s not there. particularly his siblings (he’s the baby of the family). 

46. what do they deprive themself of?

this is mostly unknowingly, but floon has always been free-spirited and active, and usually has had a full schedule between building his career and spending a lot of time with friends. for that reason, he hasn’t had many long-term relationships. he definitely loves the idea of romance and I think is ready to invest himself into a longer term relationship, but he just hasn’t found the right partner yet~ 

SHAYA 

13. what do they dislike about themself? why?

shaya is very self-aware, and I think knows she struggles with engaging with people emotionally. she’s incredibly logical and solution-orientated, and at her best when she can design a clear path forward--but an upset friend or a crush she’s nervous around always trips her. she can be almost blunt with her interpretation of a situation/the advice she gives, and sometimes puts her foot in her mouth even when she’s trying very hard to pick the right words. she wants to be better at expressing her feelings and acknowledging others’--she cares very deeply about her friends and the office’s clients and wants to get better at figuring out how she can care for them/express her support when it’s not an immediate situation she can fix with a ten-step plan. 

65. what is holding them back?

NOT MUCH she’s scary competent. I will say probably she can be held back by the fact she is unwilling to compromise when she feels she is in the right on something/she has a strong opinion on it. which is very good for her job! but not so good for like..networking in a city like waterdeep lol, particularly in her chosen field.

3. what is their goal right now?

kass generally tries to take things day-by-day (with the caveat of having multiple contingency plans), so his focus is primarily on the present: he wants to help the party get through this underdark mission and make it out on the other side unscathed. he particularly wants to ensure nothing bad happens as a result of the zhentarim and will try his best to keep the party far away from any of that. as a more personal goal, he does want to continue reconnecting with pierce and finding out what he was up to in all the years they’ve been apart. 

8. what are three songs that suit them?

as we’ve discussed this is my achille’s heel in terms of character asks BUT I threw five in and just gave up on limiting it to three so at least maybe one resonates with someone who is not me lmao. 

to noisemaking (sing) - hozier: reflective of how kass views his relationship with his music/his longing for simpler times. 

bad bad news - leon bridges: y’know when you have nothing but you’re capable and trying so hard to go forward while white knuckling being a good person? yeah. 

who are you, really? - mikky ekko: big emo hours thinking about what identity even means when you’re a spy/what level of control you even have over your life. 

matchbox - rainbow kitten surprise: this one I think is more me just liking the band and the song talking about guitars LMAO but similarly a feeling of...his frustration at being stuck as a kid and the choices he needed to make to get where he is now. 

baby outlaw - elle king: okay kass isn’t as metal as this but a) the song slaps and b) seems like a song he’d play for the zhents LOL. 

17. what do they dream about, when their dreams are their own?

OOOH hmm I think kass’ dreams are generally fairly abstract. sort of innately lyrical, since usually whatever song he’s working on gets transferred into the dream and overlaid on whatever’s happening. I think his favorite dreams are half-memories with his mom, and usually he wakes up from those with some of the songs she taught him stuck in his head.

22. what is a promise they’ve broken?

this one’s difficult because I feel like in her adult life, fawks doesn’t generally make a lot of promises to anyone but herself LOL. as a kid, I think she was very prone to making promises to not trespass on their neighbor’s property because she was pursuing a rare frog, or not stay out on a school night to watch for the appearance of some nocturnal creature, which she then obviously broke LOL but those were fairly small obviously. I think a big one she probably made at some point in her youth was that she’d stay in touch with her parents if she was going to go to university away from the misty forest...and she hmmm did not do that whoops. 

49. what makes them smile?

A LOT actually. fawks is very prone to following her feelings/her heart, and I think expresses joy pretty easily. the biggest thing is when she discovers something new/cracks a code/learns some obscure piece of knowledge because she absolutely loves learning. but smaller, day-to-day things that make her smile: her owlbear, scully; buying obnoxious ink colors (purple is the favorite); new books; rainy or foggy weather; travel/being on the move; REALLY SICK spellcasting; and of course quiche. :) 

51. what is the most beautiful thing in the world, for them?

KIND OF ALLUDED TO IT but I think fawks finds like...the act of discovering something/uncovering new knowledge incredibly beautiful. mostly because then it gets shared and there’s suddenly more truth out in the world. being part of that process is awe-inspiring for her, and also why she struggles when she’s told not to get to the bottom of something (even if that something is the magical properties of cult masks).

4. if they could learn one spell that isn’t available to them at present, which spell would it be?

fawks: god I need to stop making fawks sound power hungry (...hmmm) but it’d definitely be wish. like the infinite options...sometimes it’s good that spells are above your ability to cast, that’s the universe taking care of itself. 

kass: unlike fawks, kass has less concrete arcane ambitions. for practicality’s sake, seeming would be extremely useful. for fun? he thinks otto’s irresistible dance sounds hysterical. 

15. do they trust their party? why or why not?

fawks: for the core crew, I think fawks definitely does! honestly probably more than she’s trusted anyone previously in her life except scully. they’ve been journeying together for so long, and the crew has proven they’re willing to literally bring each other back from the dead if needed, so it’d be ridiculous not to at this point. maybe one day she will even share...her feelings. :U 

for kidar and valytra--definitely still testing the waters. I think she’s inclined to trust them both, and she doesn’t believe they’d betray her/the party/etc, but she doesn’t know them well and doesn’t trust them implicitly yet.

33. what makes them cry?

DIFFICULT BC THEY ARE BOTH EMOTIONALLY REPRESSED IN THEIR OWN WAYS. 

fawks: I feel like...probably the sense that she’s failed to live up to expectations. failure doesn’t make her cry every time, of course, but I think she’s haunted by the need to prove herself, and knowing she fell short on something big can drive her to tears under certain circumstances. 

kass: kass rarely cries from sadness or frustration. I will say however, that he has an artistic soul, and can be moved to tears by a particularly beautiful song/play/book/etc. he’s also sentimental, and can cry when touched by something thoughtful someone has done for him/said to him. he’s a bard what can we expect tbh.

16. what are their feelings on the people who raised them?

it’s extremely Complicated!!! I think fawks does love her family, but feels like there’s a lot of baggage there--she never felt like she was good enough for her mom and that a lot of her love was conditional on fawks’ ability to achieve and in particular to meet expectations on how she should act as a member of her well-known family. becoming a professor in the shadow of her parents’ illustrious academic careers only exacerbated that situation. I think some of the tension with her mom is based on the fact they didn’t really understand each other and that they both stopped trying after a certain point, but there is still the possibility they could reconcile someday since none of that distance came out of a place of true anger. 

fawks’ relationship with her dad is more straightforward, as her dad was much more supportive of her interests and made an effort to ensure she could pursue them. at the same time, though, he was always pulled between her and her mom, and I think fawks also never really allowed herself to be super open with him because she was afraid whose side he’d take if she ever did burn bridges permanently. 

46. what do they deprive themself of?

HMMMMM not surprising but she deprives herself of emotional intimacy, and probably even of a connection with her own feelings. she’s become very self-reliant as a coping strategy, but that does also mean she avoids dwelling on her negative emotions and tries to distance herself from them. which is! not neccessarily a healthy way to deal with them! I think she’s getting better at...trying to wrestle with them and being more open/trusting with people on her feelings, but it is still very hard for her. 

58. what do they think their role in the party is? what is their role in actuality?

LMAO I think at her best fawks likes to think of herself as one of the idea people and a leader of sorts for that reason, since she has such a strong perspective and is also more than a little full of herself. in reality though, I think maybe she more contributes to like...spontaneity and a willingness to be curious and inquisitive, to follow your passions and the joy they bring you. idk what exact ~role that is, but she definitely is all about being true to yourself and I think encourages the party to be too just based on her own enthusiasm for it. 

64. do they value mercy or justice more?

JUSTICE FOR SURE. her way of thinking is very black and white. I think she has the capacity to be moved towards mercy/forgiveness, but she’s much more likely to think people deserve the consequences they are given (which has made the whole situation with the black dragon weigh on her more--she thinks she deserves some type of punishment for her mistake).

10. how often do they lie? what situations cause them to be dishonest?

why would you ask kass, a spy, this? :) 

LMAO but in seriousness, kass does of course have a more free-wheeling approach to telling the truth than most. he has no problem with lying to achieve his own ends, particularly when he believes it’s for something important/some type of mission. he also does not neccessarily have an issue with telling white lies if he believes it will help someone (or at the very least, not do them any ill). 

THAT ALL BEING SAID, I think he holds himself to a pretty high standard of being truthful with people when he has no reason not to be. kass greatly values honesty given the nature of his profession, and he tries to be genuine with both friends/allies and strangers when he has the luxury of doing so. the only time he’d lie to someone close to him is if he thought it would protect them--he definitely does not have an inherent desire to deceive or manipulate anyone, and I think at his heart definitely prefers to engage openly with people. 

15. do they trust their party? why or why not?

not to get TOO into the weeds about his ~complicated morality since we covered that with the last question, but I don’t think think trust is very straightforward with kass. he’s used to watching his own back and holds most people at arms’ length because true friends in the zhents are hard to come by. he trusts the party insomuch as he doesn’t have any reason to believe they’d betray him at the present moment, or cut and run if things went south (since they very much did the session he almost got killed LOL). but I don’t think he trusts that this will always be the case, even though he likes the party a lot. the one exception is probably pierce, given their history--like obviously he understands pierce wouldn’t stand for him messing with the party for zhent business (like that’s valid lmao), but he trusts implicitly that pierce will stick with him through hell, since pierce already has proven he will.

57. what makes them angry?

kass is very hard to make genuinely angry! his temper has a long fuse, and when he does get upset, it’s usually a burst of emotion that he quickly gets over once the situation has been addressed. one thing that will always make him furious though, given his past, is the issue of wealth disparity (and particularly its effects on children). he generally has no love for nobles for this reason. kass also hates cruel people and bullies, which has definitely made working for the zhentarim...difficult at times. 

69. how would they describe their party members?

gwen: “gwen is one of my very favorite people I’ve met recently! she is very tenacious, to have come to the underdark with us for the first time on this mission and kept going even with everything we’ve faced. I think she does not give herself enough credit for how strong she truly is. she seems to be weighed down by her past, and I hope she can leave it behind with time--she seems freer when she does what she wants to do, rather than what is expected of her. she is also incredibly smart--I stand by the ratapult being a work of true genius.” 

jolene: “jolene is, I think, a bit more than she likes to project. she is definitely bold and a force to be reckoned with when she puts her mind to something, and both a skilled fighter and musician, which is truly enviable! but I think she tries to hide that her passion comes from a place of caring deeply about her friends like pierce...but I suppose I could be wrong, as we have not known each other for too long. what I do know? her leather jacket is far superior to any other I’ve seen, as is much of her style. oh also! I don’t understand her relationship with the void, but I have a healthy respect for it.” 

pierce: “ahhh, it is hard to come up with the best words to describe pierce. he would probably hate to hear me sing his praises, but he is definitely one of the most true men I have ever known--he is the rare breed that tries to always do what’s right for no reason but because it’s the right thing to do, who chooses what is good over what is easy. and he has been that way even since we were kids. I don’t think he values himself enough for that, and I’d like to see him one day really realize his own worth. I do want to know more about what happened to him in the time since we lost contact--he has always been an anxious person, but I wonder if something happened during those years that is still affecting him...also, on a lighter note, he died and came back as a halfling? which I am still wrapping my head around.”
