it’s giving “i, a white woman, understand the ramifications of racism, and the overglorification of nostalgia for a time when ppl of colour were persecuted for their colour, better than u, a poc” like yes we understand the context we understand the intention but even then that line fails to justify itself man 💀💀 like yes it’s just weird. even feeling nostalgic for a better time in the past and then poetically “realising” that the past wasn’t any better is a privilege in itself because literally no one who was actually persecuted during that time feels that way. literature has to have clarity of intention and this shit is not it
Saw this on twitter. Swifties really went after a girl of color for thinking that the line “living in 1830” is weird and got her to delete her own tweet about it..
The worst thing I've ever written is my final assignment for a screenwriting class. The professor successfully pushed me into writing the blandest mess of a "thriller" you could imagine. It was garbage, and when he called me to give feedback on it, his only point was. His only point was. His only point was asking me why I made a character Chinese, if I didn't have her do "kung fu" or use "herbal medicine". I pointed out she was a spy, and spies in our modern post-post-Cold War era basically have to be Chinese or Russian or American, and I'm pretty sure Chinese spies use guns instead of channeling the mystical kinetic energies of the chi, but he demanded I "use" the fact she was Chinese. Though someone staring at the hottest garbage ever written and only going "but why isn't this character white?" does seem like a realistic simulacrum of the film industry experience
What really gets me about the “you’re too dumb for her lyrics” is how smug they are about it. Like, we read the same lyrics, came to the same conclusion, and you’re superior because I didn’t like it?? Liking the content is not going to change the analysis. Its cool that the only content you like is easily turned into an Instagram caption. Genuinely, if that’s your taste, go forth enjoy, I’m sure you’d hate my books. But don’t act like you’re smarter or better than someone because you buy all the trendy urban outfitters books and can decipher this weeks tiktok quote. The ability to read does not make anyone better than anyone else. I could be the dumbest idiot alive and if I like her music, they’d still welcome me openly. But since I hate it, regardless of my intelligence or analyzing skills, I’m dumb. Swiftie logic and mean girl bullying drives me up the fucking wall.
!!!! “the ability to read does not make anyone better than anyone else” SO TRUE!!!!
