Heart Drive - Imre and Marne van Opstal

Dutch artist duo and siblings Imre and Marne van Opstal make their Ballet BC debut with a new commission and co-production with Helsinki-based Tero Saarinen Company. Following successful careers as dance artists with NDT 1 & 2 and Batsheva Dance Company, the van Opstals’ choreographic work often speaks to the limits and possibilities of the body and mind. This exciting international collaboration will explore themes of love, connection and pleasure, as well as the stigmas and moral taboos that exist within. Coup de Grâce is a film about the collapse of a friendship, about what is broken and what cannot break. After a long separation two men meet again in a massive building at a remote location. In the course of the evening and an icy night, they fight a weaponless, exhausting duel.

It tells of how feelings of revenge can never be transformed into resignation in spite of the passing of time. How the lust for life burns, smolders, rekindles and then slowly dies. This duel ends with neither winner nor loser.

Pit - Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber

With a modern and figurative stage set, intertwining Sibelius' Violin Concerto with a musical creation by Celeste Oram, Pit takes the audience into a sensual, tribal and dramatic universe.

Both trained at the Batsheva Dance Company under Ohad Naharin, Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber present Pit, their first creation for the Paris Opera Ballet.

Born in Iowa, Bobbi Jene Smith joined Batsheva in 2005. In 2014, she embarked on a career as a choreographer, creating works for the Martha Graham Dance Company, the L.A. Dance Project and the Royal Danish Ballet. Born in Israel, Or Schraiber joined Naharin’s Company in 2010. He has directed, choreographed and acted in several short films.

Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber share a strong attraction to the world of cinema, and they starred and danced in Aviva in 2020.

Elemental Exchange - Gil The Grid & Matilde Tommasini at North Sea Jazz Festival 2022,Ahoy Rotterdam Musicality, connection, intuition, trust, details, communication, storytelling in the moment. Gil and Matilde sharing the floor during our Elemental Exchange at North Sea Jazz. The Elemental Exchange is a unique dance experience wherein first meetings between people are a vital concept. An authentic and pure moment in which two souls lie a connection between each other. The dancers will be invited to find each other synergetically on the sounds of both a live musician and DJ (and dancer) Gil the Grid. A concept originated from the HipHop battle scene, where dancers meet each other more competitively. During the Elemental Exchange, we emphasize exchanging rather than the competition so that we can learn from and be inspired by each other. Always with the key elements of HipHop; Peace, Love, Unity, Having Fun, and Self-Knowledge. The different dancers of Amenti, with a wide range of dance styles and identities, will appear on stage during this improvisational performance. Nobody knows what will happen; a surprise and unique moment for everyone there. This interactive performance also allows the audience to provide the dancers with input while they're on the floor. The elements or 'layers' that Amenti uses in their movement discipline are also a recurring concept during this performance and a way to connect and communicate. How do you find meaning when nothing lasts forever? Where do you seek happiness when being happy is “just the way you feel” at any given moment? How do you live in the here and now when the next challenge lies just around the corner?

The universal law of change is that nothing stays the same. Our neatly asphalted roads, beautiful houses, accumulated possessions, love, suffering, all are finite. Frightening though it might seem, perhaps it’s this impermanence that makes life so amazing.  The dance performance Fortune is the result of a fascination with this impermanence that is inherent of nature.
