There are three types of fanfiction authors

meticulously plots the entire story, writes the whole thing, gets someone to beta it, edits, and then posts one chapter at a time at regular intervals

Posts as they write because they need the comments for sustenance. Eventually ‘concludes’ the story as people slowly leave the fandom over the three year it takes to finish
