Goodbye

This post isn’t fun to write, but it’s been a long time coming now. rollrskat.es is now officially defunct and will not continue to be developed.

There are a lot of reasons regarding this decision, but the main one being that it has been over a year since work has been done on rollrskat.es and I don’t want people to feel lead-on.

This has been one of the most amazing and exciting projects of my web development career, and although the product itself failed, I still learned an incredible amount of things working on this project. I’m now professionally doing freelance web design and front-end development, and without rollrskat.es, I don’t think I would have ever had the confidence nor inspiration to do that.

Thank you for two-and-a-half amazing years of rollrskat.es

Let's talk about SSL.

First off, what is SSL?

SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, is the standard system for encrypting the data you send to a server on the web. This protects all the sensitive data you send across the internet, such as usernames and passwords.

rollrskates uses SSL for all data transactions on the site. However, some similar projects to rollrskates do not use SSL, which gives us a major advantage when it comes to keeping your data out of the hands of hackers.

hey so far this blog has been doing everything right. just keep it up! there isn't a lot of traffic yet but i wanna blame it on the other tumblr alternatives that got so far and just failed/gave up, so i imagine a lot of people are discouraged. So really thanks for staying up this whole time!! and giving us hope

rollrskates sends all requests over SSL!

Pillowfort.io (a new blogging platform like tumblr) is up and going through beta. The features look good but the login page has no SSL certificate and is not secure. Your username, password and session cookie are sent in plaintext to their servers.

If you’re on a public connection, you’re telling everyone on it this:

As you can imagine, anyone with access to these has access to all your posts.

I’ve sent them messages about this and had no response, so now I’m putting this out there. Stay safe.

I signed up for the beta but im worried that i wont be accepted as the same time as my friends. Do you choose beta users randomly or is it in order of signing up ?

Beta participants are chosen randomly. However,

You will be given the ability to generate invite links.

This means that if you have any friends you’d like to join the beta with you, you can invite them with a link tied to your account.

(We were gonna announce this closer to the beta launch, but now is a better time than any)

You will not have to worry! All information will carry over.

rollrblade is now rollrskates!

That’s right – we’ve re-branded ourselves. Aren’t we adorable?

There are a few different reasons for this change, but the most important one is that we were long overdue for an update. “rollrblade” just… wasn’t right for us.

So, what does this all mean?

We’re going to be going by rollrskates now.

We’ll be changing our logo and color scheme.

I sure did! We’ve ditched rollrbla.de and are now going with the much cleaner rollrskat.es (if you experience problems on mobile let me know, please!).

Okay, that’s cool and all, but when will I get a beta invite?

TL;DR: Eventually this year, maybe summer.

Recently, we’ve expanded our team by six people. That’s nine whole people working on rollrskat.es at once! Development will be going a lot faster because of this, so we’re aiming for late summer. This is just a projection, but we’re feeling good about it!

On a side note, I’m also re-branding myself (sorta). I’ll be going by xarb instead of laxeot from now on.

There's a recent post on a blog called Idle Words that argues that, for privacy purposes, social media needs a travel mode. (Since I can't link here, that's the title: Social Media Needs a Travel Mode.) In this temporary mode, a user's account would only have access to a small amount of recent data, to prevent third parties like border agents from vacuuming a user's whole profile up. Would you consider adding a feature like this to Rollrblade, as a matter of data security?
