things i believe about kevin day

he has very few memories of his mother. similar to how jean's life in marseille is a "fractured mess, dreams that dissipated before he woke enough to recall them with any clarity" (TSC, p.11), the same is true for kevin. he was in the nest longer and arrived younger.

the memories he does have of her are blurry and incomplete, flashes here and there. he does not remember her entire face. he remembers freckles and bright skin, the furrow in her brow when she'd watch exy.

his life before her death is also scattered.

he had a pretty strong irish accent, but it disappeared over his first three years in the nest full time. there are a handful of words where it slips out, but it's a rare thing, and it's slight enough that no one really notices.

his relationship with riko is immensely complicated. he is terrified of him. he hates him. he loves him. he misses him. he still looks over his shoulder to tell riko something. he still looks for riko on the court.

by the time we meet kevin in tfc, kevin is aware of how toxic and possessive his relationship with riko was. he still isn't ready to address and unpack the whole thing.

he and riko would work on their aim by trying to hit a ball at the same spot in the same wall over and over again. somewhere in the depths of evermore, there is a ball-sized indent in the wall.

kevin did the same exercise for hours on the outside wall of his hotel in the time between finals and riko's funeral.

he was more afraid of tetsuji than he was of riko. a different kind of fear.

he is terribly, horribly afraid that his mother knew what tetsuji was involved in and capable of. he is terrified that his mother knew what kind of guardian he was to riko, and what she was condemning kevin in the event of her death.

he chooses to tell himself that she didn't know. that she never would have sent him to tetsuji if she did. but that doubt haunts him for a long time.

he doesn't remember her well enough to be entirely confident of her love for him. he spent every summer with tetsuji and riko, and he isn't convinced that she didn't know how badly tetsuki treated riko.

nathaniel haunted kevin the same way he haunted jean.

he almost told wymack he was his father several times, especially in the beginning.

kevin day is not a coward. he is terrified. he is trying to rebuild his entire life after it fell apart entirely. he is a victim. he was wrong for involving jean in his escape plan, but he could not have escaped without jean's involvement. he is not wrong for escaping. he is struggling. he is doing his best, and sometimes, it isn't enough. but he's trying.

kevin day cares about the people around him. he cares so much.

Matt was the first one to make a promise to Neil, that he would protect him from the monsters until graduation. He gets Kevin off Neil during their first fight in the dorm. He protects Neil's things when Neil calls from Columbia. He waits up for Neil to come back from the first night practice with Kevin just to make sure he is unharmed. He saved Neil from Riko during the banquet since Andrew had his hands full with Kevin. I can keep going but my point is Matthew Boyd does not get enough love from this fandom!!!

Jean gets into the pool for the first time and expects commentary and big deals to be made of it like the Trojans have done with all his other trauma but Derrick and Derek only ask if he would like to play mermaids. Jean is .. very confused

andrew "i want nothing" minyard certified yearner of all time. wants a mother so bad he'll do anything to keep cass, even suffer her son. wants to protect his brother so bad he does whatever it takes, and that's before he even meets aaron to begin with. wants to take care of all the people who matter to him so bad that he always takes it a little too far. wants to be known so bad he'll give a boy he doesn't fully trust yet a key while telling him to stay. wants to be understood so bad he can't help but give ground to the first person who's really starting to, no matter what the deference does for his reputation. wants to have things to live for so bad he agrees to let people try to give him some. wants to be loved so bad he has to stifle the feeling and can't handle it when he actually is. wants to want nothing and wants more than anyone will ever know.

blue does not get enough credit for analyzing gansey and adam’s relationship so quickly. literally the second the boys come for the reading, she notices the tension: adam’s pride, his difference from the other boys, the snag in his sweater, ganseys apparent ownership, the way adam’s eyes flick to gansey at the word brother. all from having very little interactions with them

i love the idea that almost no one can pick up on the tiny shift in andrew's microexpressions or distinguish between basically any of his expressions at all other than aaron. not because of some twin telepathy thing but because i think it would be hilarious that the only other person than neil in a room full of the foxes that realizes andrew is eye-fucking neil is the last person who wants to know about it. cue aaron yelping in dramatic revulsion and pretending to gag while everyone asks him wtf is wrong and he just points at andrew like "look at him!!!" and then everyone looks at him and he looks the exact same as always. bored and blank. best poker face andrew minyard and aaron minyard the one man cursed to see it through it
