Avatar knew nothing about devil slayers so Gray decides to do more research on his own (his previous research was stopped because of the mission)(AU Julia didn’t follow him and make them share a house). When ft gets back together he decides to ask Levy if the council had any information, but gets nothing. He asks Freed and even goes to saber to ask Rufus. Nothing.
On one of their missions together, Rogue asks how Gray is doing, because Rufus had mentioned he had visited. This prompts Gardel to remember Levy asking him if he remembers the council having any information about devil slayers. Laxus remembers a comment from Freed about his frustration towards lack of information about rarer types of magic. Together (mainly Wendy and Rogue) they put together that maybe Gray isn’t as sure about his magic as he seems.
No one’s heard of it + received from his reanimated father + had for only a year + not his original magic + played it up in a dark guild + absorbed a curse = lost and confused fledgling devil slayer. But just to be sure, they have a period of ‘Gray watch’ to try and confirm their suspicions. Gray watch= subtle (or unsubtle depending on the slayer) watching and questions. Gray’s probably confused, but it’s fairy tail so he’s not too concerned (plus the dragons have done weird things before).
Bonus: Gray being jealous of the slayers all having each other and hanging out, but with their weird behaviour starts to believe he’s dodged a bullet.
Thoughts? Would love to hear your ideas
firstly, anon, thank you for giving me an excuse to talk abt Gray + Dragon slayers again, second, im gonna take this and run
i love the idea of the dragons being protective/taking Gray under their wing so to speak, and i love the idea of them scrambling to try and help him in some way even more
Rogue, even though he technically set off everything, actually didnt know much other than what he observed himself, when Rufus told him Gray stopped by but didnt stay to chat with him or Sting (or Frosch!) he tried to ‘subtly’ interrogate Rufus
Rufus figured out what he was doing and shut him down, saying to ask Gray himself and that it wasnt his business to tell
Although, Rogue also saw Rufus carrying a book on different slayer magic types so he hazarded a couple guesses
When he does set it all off its like their collective braincell goes into overdrive
they dont all figure it put right away, its post mission that they discuss what they know
‘Gray Watch’ as you so beautifully put it, is their clumsy attempt at sussing out info and to help him
Gray noticed something was up fairly quick because, while they were trying, subtly isnt exactly their forte
he first noticed because Natsu was actively trying to get closer and the conversations he started didnt end up in fights
At first when all the questions started he just thought they were curious because he was another slayer, and when most of their questions ended in his lack of answers he thoight they would just stop and go back to normal but they didnt
They just kept coming, if they were asking questions they were giving advice, or even complimenting his new magic and how fast he figured it out
While the Dragons think hes totally lost and confused, he isnt really, Grays used to having to adapt quickly and at least it was ice devil slayer magic, he gets the big picture and the dynamics of it but he just doesnt know what the hell it is? and why isnt there any information on it?
Gray ends up convinced theyre all infected with some sort of virus, a virus that apparently makes them really social, with.. just him? (hes still working on the theory)
Their advice is kinda a hit or miss, they only know the stuff they found out pertaining to Dragon Slayers, and they assume what works for them will work for him too, sometimes it does but a lot of the time it doesnt
Dragon and Devil slayer magic, while under the same subtype of magic, are very different, but they dont have the resources to know that outright
other tidbits my brain came up with
Dragon slayers specifically have a naturally high metabolism and appetite
they assume thats its the same for Gray, Natsu told Mira to start adding extras to his plate when he eats at the guild, and also started offering the snacks he eats during the day
Gajeel would try to inconspicuously ask Levy abt dif slayer type and she happily did even though she knew exactly what was doing
Sting started to pester Rufus for any info on Devil Slayers constantly, while Rogue actually looked himself, they actually went to magic experts and various libraries around town and on jobs when they took them out of town
got a whole lot of nothing
When someone or Gray said anything about Devil Slayers you could literally hear their brains working in overtime while they listened
they probably took notes or something
Wendy would often ask Gray how he was doing with his new physical and mental changes and give tips on what she does when she got overwhelmed with all the sudden alterations to her person, which really confused him bc he hadnt noticed much actually changing about himself
Anything Laxus figured out himself he would relay to Freed to tell Gray, hes gotta keep up his persona hes got goin on yk?
Slayers in general have heightened senses AND emotions
Dragon Slayers, and slayers in general but its most extreme/prominent in the Dragons, have highly protective tendencies.
Devil Slayers have slight possessive traits and jealousy issues, again, slayers in general have this but its more prominent in Devil Slayers,
that being said, Gray being a slayer now means he wanted to spend more time with the others so he didnt try to stop the uptake in attention they were giving him. But since they had the plan to help him they were also spending a lot of time together, which in turn made him feel jealous and upset as if they were ignoring him
But as time went on and the dragons were getting more desperate for info Gray started believing that they were all crazy or sick
actual pictures of the Dragons trying to solve Gray

New Chapter!
"It's really shady where we're walking, but you can see the sun peaking through the trees. Most of them are deciduous, with a few evergreens in the distance. The path is pretty smooth, with shrubs and wildflowers along both sides. It veers a little to the left up ahead, maybe thirty or so meters, but I'm sure it straightens out soon after."
Lucy diligently kept a running commentary of the surroundings as the team strolled idly through the forests between Magnolia and Peony Shire, the small village due east of them. Gray opted to wear his wrap around sunglasses during the mission, deeming the free use of both hands a very big asset in a sudden attack. It was simply a matter of opening his eyes, as opposed to having to remove a cloth barrier to his sight. Natsu was eagerly contributing his own observations, cheerfully pointing out and describing interesting flower groupings, calling out sudden rises or drops in the path, or locating the sources of all the different sounds one would expect in a forest.
"That's definitely a bunch of baby birds I hear. Sounds like six- no, seven. Oh! The mom just arrived! They sound pretty happy now."
"So do you. Why are you so giddy and talkative this morning?" wondered Erza.
"Why wouldn't I be happy. There's no train service in Peony Shire. We're not riding a stinkin vehicle! I can't remember the last time we all just walked to a job. I'm all fired up!"
"It usually takes more than a stroll through the woods to get you fired up," said Gray.
Natsu, never one for mushy feels, wouldn't elaborate the true reason for his mirth; that he was simply thrilled to have the whole team on this mission. Instead, he went for misdirection.
"Happy, look! Lizards! Let's see how many we can catch!"
"Leave the wildlife alone, Natsu," admonished Erza.
"Aw! I was gonna stick a few in Lucy's bag!" lamented Happy.
"You stay out of my things, you stupid cat!"
"Simply childish," Carla scoffed, turning up her nose.
Happy, quickly changing his tune, replied, "Yeah Natsu. You should leave Lucy's underwear alone!"
"Who mentioned anything about underwear!" Natsu cried back.

A new story drop!
I wrote this based on a Fairy Tail head canon post on Tumblr. Hope you enjoy!
Pens and Swords Go Hand in Hand
Summary: When she was younger, Erza had a lot of issues with her hands. It wasn’t her fault she’d spent her formative years locked in a tower. She may have been able to handle a sword like a master, but she couldn’t write a letter to save her life. While recovering after a mission gone wrong, Gray offers to tell Lucy of the time he taught Erza how to write—and other things a kid ought to do.

We’re All Fired Up!!
Tumblr media
Hey everyone!
The Guild Awards are back for the first bi-annual term of 2023! We hope everyone had a wonderful start to the year! Thank you to those who participated last term for making it so enjoyable. We look forward to all the new fanfiction and fanart to be nominated for this term.
Shout out to @pencilofawesomeness for creating last term’s banners! If you haven’t received yours, please reach out to one of the mods asap!
Some changes that are taking place that may effect you as nominators. We have decided to take out both NSFW categories, as there hasn’t been much participation in those categories the last couple of terms. So at this time, we are not going to be accepting any explicit NSFW artwork; however, NSFW fanfiction is still allowed to be nominated in other appropriate categories as long as it has been tagged appropriately.
Our roulette category for this term is Best Antagonist Portrayal. This is defined as:  Stories that have a developed antagonist with motive and ambition. This does not necessarily mean a “villain” of the story, but any one person who causes conflict for the story. A large part of the story must surround this antagonist and the “heroes” overcoming the conflict. Keep in mind that characterization must also be considered depending on who the antagonist is. *Nomination must include the name of the character*
As a reminder, there is a Winner Ban in place.   This means that once any piece of artwork or fanfiction has won an award for a category, it automatically becomes ineligible and cannot be nominated again for that category. However, it can be nominated for other categories after three consecutive terms have passed (ie: one year since that piece won) as long as it fits within that definition. We do not have a rule against nominating an author/artist back into the category they won for in the past, as long as its a different piece of work that is being nominated.
In addition, we are also going to have a mobile-friendly Google Doc with all current nominations listed. This will be updated as frequently as possible so you can be aware of all the nominations that have currently been reviewed and notified. Hopefully this will help everyone select their own nominations. You can access this doc here.
If it was not mentioned above, chances are it hasn’t changed. Please be aware that the moderators always take suggestions regarding how the awards are run and category changes into consideration. You can read up on the most recent FAQs, Rules of Eligibility, and Categories for more information. [these links are only available on desktop]
The First Term 2023 Nomination Period will begin March 1st and will end March 31st. Please send in your nominations through the submit button. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to send in an ask or reach out to one of the mods!
Don’t forget we also have a discord that is open to everyone!
Mods: @classysassy9791, @kiliinstinct, @phoenix-before-the-flame, @ratretro, @phoneboxfairy
Please reblog and spread the word of the start of the new term!

New Story Drop! It’s a GrayLu fic! Enjoy!
Summary- Even though Lucy knew Gray was born in Isvan, she’s only ever known him as a citizen of Magnolia. Therefore, the possibility never really occurred to her that Fioren wasn’t his first language. What other surprises are in store as she’s given this rare peek into his shrouded past? A GrayLu one shot.
Excerpt:
“How do you say hello?"
"Saale."
"Salay?"
"Saale. Saa-, saa-. It's tonal. Hold it for two beats, and the le- is very short."
"Saale. Okay," she murmured, making a note of it, before pausing. She wondered, "If you didn't shake hands, how did you greet each other?"
"You're easily distracted."
"Hey! Learning a new language is all about immersion. So immerse me in your ways, oh teacher."
"Hmph! Depends on who I was greeting. There were simple head nods between friends; a short bow for older people, like parents and teachers. For elders, like my dåsje, you'd hold your hands like this," he said as he demonstrated, putting his hands out as if to receive something, "and wait for them to tap their fingertips to yours. Then you'd touch your forehead as you bowed deeply."
Lucy watched as he went through the motions, looking almost reverent as he bowed, lightly touching his fingertips to his forehead.
"It's supposed to symbolize a young man receiving wisdom from his elders."
"That's beautiful. Your village had such lovely customs."
"Yeah."
"So, um, you greeted friends one way, and parents another. How did lovers greet each other?"
Gray raised his eyebrow at that, and he didn't miss the hint of a blush on her cheeks, though she tried her hardest to look candid.
With an impressed grin, he faced her and answered, "A man would bring his hands together like this," he said as he brought his hands together as if in prayer," and bring them to his lips. He'd kiss his index fingers," again, he did just that, then brought them down, opening them as they came level with his heart, as if holding something, "Then the woman would do the same, bringing her hands together, but instead of kissing them, she'd fold them over her heart, receiving the love the man had bestowed."
Something in Gray's demeanor caught her attention. She wasn't sure if it was his purposeful movements as he'd positioned his hands, or the hopeful, inviting way he gazed at her now, but she felt a boldness come upon her as she replied.
"You mean like this?"
Her gaze met his as she brought her hands together, and neither noticed how her breath hitched as she brought them over her heart.
In his eyes, every move she made was flawless.
"Ise."
Yes.

An excerpt from the latest chapter:
Looking around, Lucy wanted to break the strained silence, about to comment about the unsurprising upheaval of the house, when she glanced upon the memory wall. She almost gave it no second thought, but something caught her eye.
"Is that your winning bingo card?" she asked, smiling softly.
"Yeah. That was a pretty fun day."
"It was… We've had a lot of fun days lately, haven't we?"
"Of course. We always have fun together."
"We do. But it's especially fun when all of us are together, isn't it?"
Natsu grinned just the slightest bit as he said, "Yeah."
Lucy returned his grin, saying, "It's been really nice. Things have gotten better, haven't they? I'm glad you've been finding new memories worth cherishing again."
Her eyes were drawn to the tiny flame, surprisingly bright and warm for how small it was. It was so still, almost frozen in time, save for brief flickers whenever their breaths reached it. Seemingly trivial to most, to Lucy, this impressive display revealed the masterful control Natsu truly had over his flames. This only made her wonder.
"So why were you holding back?"
"… I used my powers when I needed to."
"That's not how you fight. You're always eager to let loose when given the chance."
"You really think he was ready for a Fire Dragon's Roar to the face?"
"I don't know what he was ready for, but I think you should have believed he knew, and given him the chance to tell you himself when he'd had enough. Instead, you did everything you could to—"
"—To do what?! Not risk burning the rest of his skin off?"
"He'd never let you do that."
"How could he stop me?!"
"With his powers. The ones you helped him regain."
"Hmph! What does that say about me? I can roast dark mages all day, and do it with a smile on my face. But when I try to use my powers to 'help' my friend, it sickens me... I stood right over him, Lucy. I smelled the smoke, and the cooking skin and muscle. I heard every pop and sizzle, every pained gasped, every scream I tore out of him. I wished every second that it wasn't me doing that to him."
"That just shows how compassionate you are, no matter how tough you try to act. And you know no one else could have done that for him. There may be other fire mages out there who can control their powers better than even you can, but you're the one Gray trusts the most. He's trusting you to help him now. You need to trust him, too. Trust him to be able to stop you from hurting him, because maybe if you believe he can, it'll be easier for him to believe it too."

"But it's okay to let me kill you instead?! To rip your arm off, and eat it right in front of you?! To beat you senseless, tear your flesh apart, crush your bones into a bloody paste?! You're a demon slayer! You could have stopped me. You should have!"
"You think I didn't try?!"
"I know you did! You had me beat, several times. You should have finished the job while I was down, when you had the chance!"
"If you had any hope of both of us coming out of that alive, would you have chosen lethal force, just to end it quicker?"
"You were alone with me! I was going berserk, in freaking Dragon Force! What hope could you have possibly had other than 'kill or be killed'?!"
"I wasn't alone, Natsu. I had you, and the girls. Erza was fighting too, trying to defeat that thing on her own front, and I knew she wouldn't fail, so I had to keep you alive until the others returned. I had to! I couldn't bring myself to kill that demon, knowing the others were on their way. In my mind, I kept picturing them returning just one second too late, so I did everything I could to push that second further and further down the line, waiting for them to return."
"Look where that got you! Do you still think they came in time? What if they had come before things went so far to shit?! What if they'd come before you put the demon to sleep?! Even Erza says I would have been impossible to stop without your powers! I would have done to them what I'd done to you! I was a monster! I should have been put down like a rabid dog! You should have killed me!"
"IT WASN'T YOU, YOU STUPID F*CK!"

He gasped, suddenly overtaken by shock, horror, and a gut wrenching shame. He was paralyzed, trembling as he felt his stomach drop, feeling ill and clammy all over as a cold sweat formed at the back of his neck. He held back a whimper as best he could, trying to meet Gray's eyes, but he couldn't pull his attention away from what had drawn his unwavering gaze.
He should have known. He should have anticipated. He should have asked them, before he'd ever agreed to come; but had always held Wendy's skills at such high esteem, almost taking advantage of how miraculous they could be, never believing there could ever be a limit to them. He should have been able to guess from the little he'd seen on the way in. Wendy had been working so diligently on her little project, the one radiating so much cold. Ice was good for many things. Soothing pain, lowering fevers, providing a cooling relief in an otherwise too warm room. He'd neglected what ice was most often used for: Preservation.
Natsu stood ramrod straight, completely taken aback by the sight which confronted him. He couldn't pull his eyes away from the bitter price of his weakness. He stared—unblinking, unmoving, unprepared—at the grotesque, enflamed, bandage-wrapped stub of Gray's shoulder, and the empty space where his arm should have been.

"What's wrong?" asked Yuka.
"Nothing's wrong," Lyon began, thinking quickly, "It's just... Gray and I spent the last couple of weeks getting ready for today, and talking about what we'd do. I thought we'd all be enjoying the festival together."
"Of course you were."
Lyon didn't need Gray's mastery of tonal clues to have noticed the ill feelings in Yuka's words.
"Hey, is something bothering you?"
"Never mind. You're right. We came to enjoy the festival. If you want Gray to tag along, I'm sure we can find plenty of things he can do too."
Feeling Gray stiffen beside him, Lyon was growing more upset with this topic, and disappointed in his friends.
"Tag along? You say that like he's some kid who got saddled with his big brother and his friends."
"Kinda accurate, isn't it?" murmured Toby, before Yuka lightly elbowed him in the ribs before he replied.
"I didn't mean it like that. We're fine with hanging out with your friends. We just miss having you around, that's all. Look, you wanna check out the storytellers, right? So let's go. There should be some musical acts too, and some other shows he can enjoy."
"You don't need to go out of your way to accommodate me," said Gray.
"We're just trying to be nice. Unlike Lyon, we haven't spent that much time hanging out with blind people, so excuse us for not knowing how to treat you!"
"How about no different from your sighted friends!"
"Let's not get mad over misunderstandings! Yuka, Toby, I told you he can see now. Remember? And even if he couldn't, there's no reason we can't do whatever you want here," Lyon tried to assuage.
"Then why the Hell are you still here?! Why haven't you come home yet?!" demanded Yuka.
That was a delicate topic. Both he and Gray understood his need to be there, but neither were eager to share such personal details to anyone else. Lyon especially knew how sensitive Gray was about having his vulnerabilities known to those who really had no business knowing.
"It's not… it's not that simple. Yes, he can see, but only when he needs to—"
"—Yeah, what's up with that? What kind of weirdo chooses not to see?!" asked Toby.
"You will watch your tongue, you rude little puppy man," seethed Erza.
"I think we should all take a step back and remember we're all friends here!" cried Lucy.
"Lucy-dono speaks wisely," Jura interjected, "This behavior is unbecoming of our guild.
"Whoa! What's up with all the tension?"
"Looks like we interrupted something, yes?"
All heads swiveled towards the unexpected voices. Standing before them were a brightly smiling Sabertooth guild master and his exceed companion.
