As many of you know, I’m a huge advocate of living a zero/low waste lifestyle if you’re able. But I’m also a huge advocate of remembering that such a lifestyle isn’t accessible for everybody, especially certain members of the disability community...

 There’s a lot of controversy around plastic bans and their affects on the disability community; and whilst I’ve written up numerous posts regarding this on my blog (link in the bio!), I’ve decided to once again touch on one of the most discussed plastic bans... straws.

For some disabled individuals, there currently is no good alternative to plastic straws. And guess what? That’s okay. If you’re someone who needs a plastic straw, no one should be shaming you for putting your needs first and foremost. Plastic straws pose little to no allergy risk. They pose little to no injury risk. They are safe in hot liquids. They are easily sanitized. They hold their shape. They pose little to no choking hazard... Zero/low waste straw alternatives such as metal, silicone, paper, bamboo can’t check all these boxes, thus making them nowhere near as accessible. 

So how about instead of shaming others for using plastic straws (unless they’re simply doing it for the sole purpose of being a jerk to the planet), why don’t we focus on the bigger culprits of plastic pollution??? #zerowaste #lowwaste #plasticstraws #strawbans #plasticbans #ableism #disabilityawareness #accessibility #plasticfree #plasticfreejuly

“So Rory, how many different languages do you know???”

 “Well I’ve a working knowledge of at least 16 different languages; though I’m only conversational in 9 and fluent in 4...”

People often ask me about my knack for languages. How is it I know so many? How can I recall so many words? How can I learn a new language when I can’t hear it? And honestly, I’ve no straight answer for any of these questions. I’ve simple loved languages for as long as I can remember; and upon having people tell me I’d never be able to study languages because I’m deaf, I wished to prove them wrong! So maybe it’s my stubborn willpower that’s led me to where I am today. Or maybe it’s a superpower? #SuperRory #SuperRorycorn Whatever the reason, I hope to learn more languages someday and become fluent in those I already know.
