The fact that Rose says "my Pearl" to Pearl... A lot of people wonder, "oh, she belonged to Rose". No one calls their Pearl "my Pearl", people only say that to their superiors. So there's actually a lot more going on in that scene.

Q: Do you feel that Rose forgot about Spinel? if not, did she ever think of going back one day?
Rebecca Sugar: Well, so much of the show is about how—and this is something that I think was was really ultimately captured in the end credits song—when you don't think of yourself as someone with power, you know, Pink had so much less power than everyone that was around her. She didn't understand how much she mattered to other people. And that meant that she did things to them that that she didn't really think twice about because her importance to others was not—it didn't register to her. I think in feeling that she didn't matter, that radiated out to other people as well. Her relationship to Spinel, it is— Spinel was a sort of a toy to her. And when she saw an opportunity to her to to grow up and be, you know, what she thought of as a better person, the collateral of that was not registering to her. I will say that the version of Pink in the show is a softened version of what she was originally like, if you can believe it. So, you know, I think the sympathetic side of that and her own self depreciation, that was something that grew as we developed the character over time. And I see that influencing a lot of her actions. And in aspiring to be a better person than she felt like she was, that made her the person that she was, if that makes sense.

it is canon that rose doesn't want steven to have anything to do with her diamond history, and literally says that she doesn't want steven to feel the way she did in her original home. it is just a fact that she, as the story-appointed tragic clown, has the worst luck in the stevenworld

something I really like about rose is that her storyline doesn't end on an idealistic note like all of the other characters' storylines. there isn't a future for her because she ended her own life. while every single other gem has all of eternity to grow and change, I'm pretty sure she's the only character who has died and stayed dead bc even gems who have been shattered can be healed. but rose is gone forever. there's no going back. no loophole. steven's gem will go dormant once he dies and he will never meet rose and the gems will never see her again
this really reinforces rose's story as being a cautionary tale: the other storylines are about how it's possible to change and communicate and love themselves. meanwhile rose's storyline is about what happens when you don't believe you're capable of change and don't communicate and don't love yourself. her story is a tragedy, really, because it's the story of someone who never healed. she never got closure and never got to unlearn all of the awful things she believed about herself
I think it makes her storyline even more emotionally poignant and it makes her even more human: real-life people don't have closed character arcs with beginning, middle and end. they don't always heal. most people won't have everything figured out before dying — it's actually more likely for there to be loose ends afterwards. they stay dead and their loved ones never get to see them again. they may die hating themselves or in agony over something they'll never get to grapple with
that's also the reason I why love seeing fics or fan art where she's alive because it creates a stark contrast with her canon ending. it'll never be possible for her canon self which makes it even more gut wrenching to see what could have been if things had only gone differently
