we all know that rose had self esteem issues, right? now, i don’t think rose had insecurities about her appearance often, because she felt the most safe & comfortable as rose! but we all have those moments, and when rose had them, i can’t even begin to describe how helpful pearl must have been…
she hears some humans saying that God created you in His image and she was like, huh, pearl created me in HER image
which is… insane but when rebecca sugar wrote about the way rose sincerely “worshipped” everyone around her in end of an era, and pearl was very much her favourite person who she referred to as my pearl, this crossed my mind

I feel like enough time has passed since Steven Universe ending to say this: inventing your own alter ego and then launching a war against yourself is an iconic move actually. It's like if Batman and Bruce Wayne had public beef except if entire armies were involved. She really Did That. She said "go big or go home" and then went so big that no-one could ever go home, and then changed the fate of the entire galaxy by faking her own death. She slutted it up bisexually and broke countless hearts along the way. Iconic move after iconic move. Non-stop slaying. A queen an icon a legend. No-one does it like her.

“rose was saying awful things about the diamonds, especially pink diamond, 100% of the time. the reason that bismuth considers herself to be the ultimate crystal gem is because she was following rose’s vitriol more to the letter than anybody else.” — steven universe podcast, vol 3, ep 1
rose & bismuth’s story is incredibly devastating. in the return, steven starts to learn that there’s no such thing as a good war. yet, rose went into the rebellion intending to protect lives, not destroy them. but war is brutal & it can bring out the worst in everyone, even allies.
when the war started, rose had recently faced lifelong abuse on homeworld and she was deeply ashamed of herself & her past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
when she spoke to the crystal gems, she described pink diamond as “wicked” because white told her she only made things worse, & “cowardly” because she felt powerless on homeworld. bismuth followed rose closely, as she was passionate about the cause.
rebecca also notes that rose said terrible things about pink diamond especially, which shows how deeply the emotional abuse affected her. rose carried so much pain & she blamed herself for it more than she blamed her abusers. which aligns with white’s manipulative & cruel statement in change your mind, [pink] makes things worse, i make things better
rose always wanted to destroy herself, either through escapism (running away from her past self) or complete self-destruction (running away from herself completely). she couldn’t stand herself & believed that everyone around her was better than her, and that by destroying herself, everyone would be better off. these feelings were incredibly intense, as rose is described by sugar as being very extreme & having strong emotions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“i really thought all of our problems would disappear if we could just shatter a diamond! guess she ended up taking my advice.” — bismuth, made of honor
bismuth picked up on these feelings, unaware that rose was pink diamond. bismuth concluded that the only way out was to destroy pink.
the breaking point never destroyed pink, but rose & bismuth’s bond was destroyed instead. everything leading up to the bubbling shows how war brings out the worst in people, & rose’s abuse trauma and self-hatred deeply impacted her. it also symbolizes how running away from past pain can be harmful & the pain will come out in other ways. as connie said to steven in mindful education, you have to be honest about how bad it feels so that you can move on.
