Is Ruby going to be okay?
It’s almost like she’s floundering for dear life — Did she need room? Was she going to collapse? Eve has always been fond of hugging, so it really didn’t seem weird at all! If anything, a hug made perfect sense at the moment.
Maybe that’s where she made her mistake. Aya has never been good at picking the logical choice; instead, she follows her heart, trusting her emotions to guide her toward the right decision. While a hug may feel like the best way to express her gratitude, she fears she may have overstepped the bounds of Ruby’s personal space.
It comes as a relief, then, when Ruby lifts her arms to return the gesture.
“ What? No, it’s okay! It really is, ” Aya reassures her. Regardless of what the other girl claims, she could never judge a friend for something so trivial. “ Seriously, don’t worry about it! I’m probably kind of sweaty, too. ”
There’s a self-conscious laugh as she pulls away, sliding each hand backwards until both are again cupped around Ruby’s own. “ Have confidence in yourself. You’re a Huntress, right? There aren’t many people who can do what you do. To them, you’re a hero who protects them from harm. And I think that’s kind of amazing! ”
Being overly self-conscious was one of Ruby’s (non)special skills. It was easy for her to fight without thinking about that kind of stuff, but when it boiled down to it she was clumsy socially after school had bludgeoned the idea into her that she was ‘different’. She’d noticed her own hesitation had made Ruby feel uncomfortable though, but how could it not?
“Ahaha... Even if you are sweaty you smell nice. Maybe I should start wearing perfumes...?” She hadn’t really bothered before, it wasn’t really something she was interested in. Most of her time was spent in the wilderness so it wasn’t a good idea to wear that kind of stuff. But this was making her feel extremely wary of everything about her appearance. Of course, she hadn’t realized she’d paid Aya a big compliment in the process.
Her new friend withdrew and placed her hands against her own. At this point there was no way Aya wouldn’t have been able to see just how red Ruby had gotten from this whole incident, but even so she still cupped their hands together. Ruby appreciated Aya’s attempts to help fire her up at the very least, but as confident as she was as a Huntress those traits didn’t necessarily carry over to her social life.
She mustered a smile. “Okay, okay, you win! I don’t really think that many people see me as a hero but I get where you’re coming from. Umm... I don’t know if having confidence is that easy for me, but... At the very least you make me feel like I can improve in that area... if that makes sense?” It probably didn’t.

She wonders how Ruby can deal with it all: the city, the monsters, the thought of being trapped for an indefinite length of time. These worries steadily cram her chest with a fog-like pressure, but then —
“ Pfft ~ ! Aha, ahaha, ha! ” Aya bursts into laughter, hastily cupping a hand over her mouth to quell the rush of giggles. It’s such a silly pose, and with the way that hood flaps to and fro, even her fears can’t help thawing somewhat under Ruby’s theatrics. If only she had her phone, she might save this moment forever: Awkward, but sweet; charming, yet genuine — all of Ruby’s kindness has been bundled into a show of courage for a single, weak-willed girl, and it touches Aya beyond expression.
( When something can’t be expressed in words, it’s best not to speak, but to simply act. )
“ I’m — I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to — it’s just — oh, Ruby-chan! ” Releasing Ruby’s hand, she pulls the girl into a tight embrace, her head resting lightly against her shoulder.
“ I’m sure it will. I have a real life superhero protecting me, don’t I? ”
Ruby really couldn’t deal with it all at her core. She put on a brave face and a smile in the face of adversity, but each time she did it became more of a burden for her to bare. She wanted to be everyone’s light so much that she didn’t always care for herself.
Still, moments like these were the kind that made her feel like her actions were worth it. If she could bring someone just a little bit of relief, no matter the cost to herself, she would be happy. It was self-destructive but that was why she had friends, right? Seeing Aya laugh at her was enough.
“Haha, it’s fine! I’m used to people laughing at me! I’m not exactly the social type or anything, I was probably considered a ‘loser’ at school.” She definitely was. She considered herself part of the ‘anti-social group’ because of her difficulty making friends and her fear of crowds. “I’m just glad you-- Ah!?”
Her expression went from humbled to bright red and shocked super fast as she was suddenly brought into a hug. Aside from with her teammates she wasn’t particularly accustomed to displays of affection like this, let alone with a pretty girl like Aya. “S-Superhero? I’m not anything like that!” Her arms flailed for a moment as she wasn’t sure what to do with them, but eventually settled on hugging back.
“Um... But Aya? Are you sure you want to hug me? I’m kind of, uh... sweaty? I probably don’t smell very good either since I was trying to make a weapon in the garage earlier...” Things only Ruby would worry about.

A thin brow arches at Ruby’s sudden departure into weapon mechanics, out of amazement rather than confusion. The military specialist never knew that the bubbly young girl had an affinity for weapon design of all things. ❝ Oh, is that so? I never took you for someone who noticed such things, I’m impressed with your observations. Our swords most likely use less dust than your weapon would, because the chambers are so compact. And speaking of observations, it seems to me that your weapon is quite similar to your uncle’s. Was that by your design? ❞
It amused Winter to see for herself how invested Weiss’ friend was in her well-being. She couldn’t help but to let out a light chuckle at the innocent comment, ❝ Haha, I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see then. ❞ Her white strands of hair move side to side as she shakes her head. ❝ I’m afraid I haven’t seen the General yet. I’ve just arrived in the city myself, so I’m just trying to get accustomed to things for now. How about you, Ruby? What have you been doing? Hopefully you’ve seen the rest of your teammates here?❞
“Huh? Really? I would have thought Weiss would have told you more about me than that.” She was simply forgetting that Weiss didn’t have the luxury of talking to her sister all the time like Ruby had with Yang during their time at Beacon. “Well Crescent Rose is definitely inspired by Uncle Qrow’s Harbinger, but I had to account for the difference in our body sizes and the limitations I’d face at my height. The knockback from the shots was a big issue too and I, uh... threw out my arm a lot trying to get it right. But yeah! Made it from scratch!” She wished she had Crescent Rose at that moment but it was still the scientists’ hostage.
“What have I been doing? Ahahaha... not a lot! Everyone from my team is here but there isn’t a lot of work for someone of my skill level... I suppose I could look at completing monster hunts or something for a little bit of coin but until I have my weapon back I’m kind of hesitant to jump into anything too dangerous. I wouldn’t want Weiss and the others to worry about me either.” She leaned back on her heel before rocking back and forth nervously. “I hope you can find people you know? If not I’m sure you’ll make new friends in no time! I can be your friends too! You’re Weiss’ sister after all!”

“I guess you are right…” Not that Rey would really know. She hasn’t swam before. Almost lost in her own thoughts, till the girl’s own worries are very present and Rey is suddenly bewildered.
“What? Do swimsuits require you to have a special type of body? Or are they not for humans? I know some races need different clothing because they have extra limbs or fabrics irritate their flesh. You shouldn’t get these swimsuits if they do that to you.”
“I... What? Extra limbs? No, no!” It sounded like she was describing a Grimm more than she was a person. Of course things like ‘aliens’ weren’t exactly common concepts where she came from. “Basically they only really cover your chest and your uh... between your legs. So all of your skin is exposed and I don’t know... I always wear clothes? People would judge me...”

“… Don’t be stupid, Ruby. You’re plenty cute. I wasn’t planning on going to that party, but I could make an exception for your sake if you need company or… encouragement. I’ll bring Kyouko, too.”
“I’M NOT CUTE!” It was a shrill rejection of Weiss’ attempt at reassurance, her voice shooting higher than ever. Ruby didn’t often think about her own appearance mostly because it shot her anxiety up from an 8 to a 12.
“It’s fine! I-I’ll be fine! It’s just like the dance, right? So I’ll just sit off by myself... I don’t want to bother you guys!”

There was no avoiding Ruby - the staff and the bars owner in particular knew this very, very well. Not that Kyouko minded personally. It was fascinating to hear what Ruby had to say, whether it be from enthusiastic nonsense that she could barely discern, to ponderings of a teenager, they were always something to behold. She assumes her normal position of leaning against the wall when Ruby assaults her with those questions, as she expected to be confronted at some capacity.
❛ …truthfully, Miss Rose, I didn’t intend to woo her as you put it, ❞ she crosses her arms and glances down at her. ❛ I saved her life in Sector 3. Treated her wounds. Twice, actually. And then she wouldn’t leave me alone. She was never on my radar as a romantic interest, ❞ a sigh. ❛ We talked a lot. It was…more her talking than me, but I inevitably started talking back. We became friends. Then friends that held hands a lot. Shared dark secrets. Stared at one another for way too long, ❞ a hand comes to her chin. ❛ Eventually, she started kissing my neck, which lead to a confession. It isn’t the most enthralling tale. Your question would be better suited for Weiss herself, honestly. Unless you would like to know how I fell for Weiss. ❞
“She never left you alone, huh? Did she do that thing where she played off being around you like it was a big deal when it wasn’t really too?” It was a rare piece of snark from a Ruby that could remember her first few months in Beacon quite vividly. Weiss had been extraordinarily bad at being friendly back then, but she was a little different now. “So it could be something as simple as that, huh? Movies and stories always make it out to be some sort of big deal, I didn’t think it could be that simple really. And kissing the neck is the secret... Noted!”
That was a secret that no one needed to know, let alone Ruby Rose.
“Okay then! How did you fall for Weiss? Was it the neck kissing?” Well, she offered to spill.

She is startled at first by the girl, but once her familiar voice rang in Winter’s ears with her many questions, the white-haired woman was overcome with an odd-sense of nostalgia. ❝ Yes, I am Winter. I’m surprised to see that you’re also here, Ruby Rose. I hope the city has been treating you well. ❞
Of course Ruby would mention her fight with Qrow, and as much as that memory was associated with being reprimanded by General Ironwood, Winter couldn’t help but admit to herself that it was indeed an entertaining sparring session. ❝ I wouldn’t be a Specialist if I couldn’t hold my own in a fight, ❞ she replies haughtily, then proceeds to answer her curiosities. ❝ 1. No, our swords are different. 2. I suppose we looked similar; we are siblings after all. And lastly, I don’t know. Any other questions for me? ❞
“I guess it hasn’t been treating me badly. So good as far as good can be, I suppose!” It was hard to complain when she didn’t have to worry about Grimm or Salem. Even so, there was a sense of guilt that came with knowing she wasn’t where she could be helping the most.
“They’re different, huh? They look kinda similar though, but I really like how the dust chambers are integrated in the models you and Weiss seem to favor. I’ve streamlined the process when it comes to inserting them in Crescent Rose, but it definitely seems like what you guys use is waaaay more efficient!” And leave it to Ruby to talk an adult’s ear off about weapons of all things.
“Hm... guess we’ll see how Weiss looks in a few years. She’s got a lot of catching up to do.” Which sounded like something you might expect a creepy old man to say, but she was merely thinking of their difference in height. “Any other questions...? Not really! What are you doing here, I guess? In this city. I guess Professor Ironwood isn’t around, so are you working for someone?”

“O-On second thought I don’t know if I can go out in front of a bunch of people in a swimsuit! I’m not really pretty like Weiss or Yang or Blake, I’m not even really that cute. S-So! It’d be better if I just stayed home, right?”

“There is… swimwear? It is a thing? You don’t just… swim in clothes? I thought that is what people did.”
“I mean you could, but the heavier your clothes are the higher chance you’ll drown, right? That wouldn’t be good. So uh, swimsuits for girls are like... They don’t cover a lot, and... AAAAH! I definitely wouldn’t look good in one I don’t have the body for it!”

“Hey watch out!” Running up to an unfamiliar girl, Ruby grabbed her hand without invitation and pulled her close. She simultaneously activated her Semblance and the two were whisked away in a blur of red, crashing into a trashcan about a block away with Ruby shielding the girl from the collision. Rose petals, the remnant of her Semblance, floating to the ground in a path behind them.
Ruby could only stare from the ground at a car that had crashed into the exact spot the girl had been standing a moment ago.
“That was close. You, uh, okay? I’m not a kidnapper or anything, honest!” Ruby, she’s barely that much younger than you.

It was a pretty normal sight at this point in time. Ruby Rose, sitting against the back wall of the Golden Gun in broad daylight. It had started as protest against their ‘Zero Ruby Rose Tolerance’ policy, but ultimately since most of her friends either worked or lived near there she spent a lot of her free time, which she had a lot of, lurking out there. So it wasn’t unusual to see her jump staff that used the exit.
“Miss Kirigiri!” Pushing herself off the wall she skipped after a familiar visage. Ruby was bored as hell and, as the one that had won Weiss’ heart, Ruby had a question for her. “Hey! Can I ask you something? How do you get girls to like you? I was just thinking, because you know, you wooed Weiss and all. But I’m not really... Uh, I don’t know anything about... that. Romance I mean.”

“Hey! Hey! You’re Weiss’ sister, right!?” Practically hopping in place, the niece of Qrow Branwen shot her question at the taller Schnee. Things like ‘does Weiss know her sister is here?’ came to mind, but they were overcome by questions of her own she’d had since watching her fight in Beacon.
“I can’t believe you could take Uncle Qrow on like that! Are the swords you use the same as Weiss’s!? Did you look a lot like Weiss when you were younger!? Do you think Weiss will look like you when she gets older!?” It seemed she’d gotten off topic.
