âi have more glitter nail polish than one person could use in a lifetime.â ariane lifted her hand, showing off the long nails covered in sparkling purple polish. âi used to do my brotherâs nails. iâd bribe him with icecream.â
Roseâs nose scrunches up in laughter. âYour brother? He... let you? For ice cream? He must be easily bought. Boys I knew when I was a kid would rather die than wear anything as girly as nail varnish.â

the corners of his lips are fixed into a coy, partially visible smirk. it continues to grow as his eyes watch her countenance carefully while she fastens the band around his arm. it hadnât been completely intentional, as there has no knowing her reaction to his casually brash comment. regardless, chase had (tried) to gather his thoughts and himself, comparing the demographic of the people who were to come into the office after him against himself and the faintly blushing female amidst him. it had been to his advantage, not just in the wake of his medicinal needs but also the disintegrating ambit between them. Â
the urgent impacts of the narcotics heâd last taken some hours ago had surpassed, so he hadnât much worry about the biological impacts it had on him. there were other things to base any irregularity on, and it being either his earlier bout of paranoia, guilt or her quietly distinct reaction to him. what had perchance caused any difference were not obvious to him yet. he keeps his eyes on her as the pressure in his arm subsides and struggles to stop himself from tittering. befoe he begins speaking, he moves himself over to examination table. â itâs up to you really. personally, i think iâm in the good hands of a qualified soon-to-be nurse who can handle me herself, so no. â he shakes his head, grabbing at the hem of his shirt and pulling lightly upward, but stopping. â do i just - take it off ?? âÂ
âYou can just lift it up a little if thatâs more comfortable for you, I just need to be able to lay the stethoscope on your skin - clothes can muffle the sound,â Rose says, hooking the tool around her ears. She canât get a read on Chase; first he thinks heâs embarrassing himself, then heâs making potentially heated comments for reasons Rose canât ascertain, and sheâs not sure how it all makes her feel. Confused, mostly.
She suspects that heâs more confident than he initially let on, but sheâs still going to be respectful of his boundaries, just the same as with any patient. âReady?â she asks, holding the stethoscope up with an inquisitive smile.

âWhat, shots for the flu? Yeah, of course - weâve got a flu clinic open on ward 3. Itâs $30,â she says this last apologetically, because she feels terrible taking money for something as basic as vaccination. âWant me to take you down?â

adrien finds it easy to see the tension in her small stature standing  within the darkened road. he is reminded of his ultimate job to have a watchful, protective eye for those who needed it. he frowns as he listens to her words, but shakes his head in understanding.  â  believe me, when you stand outside venues for a few years, you get real familiar with the ones that like to ruin other peopleâs nights. â  he offers a reassuring smile.  â  parties can be shitty and uncomfortable sometimes, but you shouldnât let one bad thing - or guy - get in the way of yourgood time. if it makes you feel any better, i could go and get him now. iâm sure nobody would mind. â
âThanks, but Iâm sure heâs moved on by now. I mean, unless youâre bored and want to go start something to pass the time. I wonât stop you.â Rose says, glancing back at the door. Adrien has a solid, reassuring presence. Itâs not that she was scared, but sheâs certainly not used to that sort of attention and it was a little uncomfortable.

âWell, what if thereâs a shift and it cultured a different kind of virus? I mean, that could be a possibility right? Flu virus can be pretty complex after all.â Charlie said while her eyes never left the newspaper article as if there is some hidden message in it. âOr maybe it was not flu virus and it we are just treating it as a flu virus since its shows the same symptoms as flu. But yeah,â she chuckles nervously, âmaybe you are right.â
Rose smiles; she thought she was paranoid, but it looks like Charlie could give her a run for her money. âCould be. Maybe weâre going to have another H1N1 situation on our hands. All we can do until we know more is keep our hands clean while the doctors do their thing. Maybe start wearing surgical masks in the street; Iâm not sure if my vanity could take that though. Are you really worried?â

IT ASTOUNDED HIM HOW QUICKLY he could get hurt. after all, he was jonah jacek. the underworld knew who he was, but it seemed that the members of his own fucking group didnât. he didnât know how so many idiots had been allowed in his gang in the four years he had been behind bars. he didnât know how many faces had met his fist in the past month, but he knew this would be the fourth time that month he was in the emergency room. the first time, he had been able to pass off a story that he was a police officer. he played that nurse like a violin, weaving a story with the right words and well placed smiles. he grew up lying, it was the most dangerous weapon of all.
ânot at all.â he answered, answering the nurseâs question and resting his bloody hands on the desk. they didnât quite hurt anymore, but his knuckles were pretty worn out, as well as his cut palms. he didnât even remember the other guy having a knife, but he remembered the swift pain heâd experienced. âi have, however, had contact with a criminal, soââ he shrugged.
âUnless the criminal is hot on your tail, then Iâm not too concerned about that for now,â Rose says, surveying the damage. Itâs not the first time sheâs seen this cop in the emergency room. His beat must be in a rough area; either that, or heâs clumsy, but he carries himself with a certain confidence that doesnât lend itself to easy accidents.
âJeez, did your criminal bring a knife to a gunfight? That looks sore. I can get it all stitched up for you - Iâm graduating in the summer so Iâm not a fully qualified nurse, but Iâve passed all the necessary exams to offer stitches. You can wait for a doctor to become available if youâre more comfortable with that, but it might be a bit of a wait for you.â - sheâs had to share this brief story of her life with every bit of minor treatment sheâs been offering today. Something about liability, and patients needing to know whose care they are under.

this year had been the most concentrated in chaseâs exposure to drugs. he had been careful around them, since he had grown up around them. chase was intelligent enough to understand the consequences of consistent drug use, but in the present was able to rectify his conscious by blaming it on his inauspicious future (despite constant reassurance of his creative talents from those around him) and the pressure of completing his degree. chase could go weeks or even months without touching any drugs, just to prove a point. the frequency of exposure to substance increased just as those around him did. it hadnât helped when a medical professional offered to help him in the wrong way, either. chase tells himself heâll wait until the end of year parties are over, and he has his degree. there wonât be any need for drugs.
his emptied self-assurance canceled out any sincerity through his lack of self control. despite his ability to conceal his issue from even himself, to keep a charmingly shrewd demeanor at most times, there was a slack growing within him evident in his actions alone. his paranoia had turned to distress, which had quickly turned to a ploy. if chase had been sitting in sinclairâs office even two months earlier, with a earnest woman replacing him he wouldâve come clean, and yielded to the issue at hand. yet here he sat across from her, nodding along to her suggestions and rethinking a way to get access to the downers which would pacify his current uneven facade.
despite this, he could not escape how he felt about doing it. chase furrowed his brow for a second as he watched her reach for the device, but was just as quick to recall the illegitimacy from his customary visits and doesnât think twice about a health check. amending his deceit through compliance seemed like a good idea. â you can do whatever you want to me, doc. or, soon to be ?? i donât really know how this works. â he shakes his head as he rolls up his sleeve.
âYou can do whatever you want to me, doc.â ???
Damn whichever power it was that mandated long hair be worn up, because Rose could have really used her thick fall of dark hair to hide her embarrassed grin behind as she fastens the blood pressure cuff to Chaseâs arm. Sheâs always sort of assumed that if someone makes a comment like that, theyâre either just joking, or they hadnât meant it as it had sounded. Either way, sheâs still not got a response to hand for that sort of comment.
ââNurse,â she says, hoping her face isnât red. âSoon to be nurse. But you can just call me Rose,â
Concentrating on inflating the cuff, and feeling incredibly grateful that itâs not her own flustered blood pressure being monitored, itâs now Rose not quite making eye contact. She needs to work on her people skills, sheâs aware. Thereâs already been a few classes on dealing with harassment and difficult patients, but it was more focused on the creepy old men side of things - a side on which Chase is decidedly not. Jotting down a couple of numbers, she releases the cuff and hopes he doesnât have a quip at the ready (or maybe sheâs overthinking it and it was an offhand comment, and Rose needs to get out more), when she continues:Â âOkay, now if you could just hop onto the exam table and remove your shirt so that I can check your heart rate. Would you like a male member of staff to be present?â Sheâs yet to have a patient say yes to that, but theyâre obliged to offer. Hopefully itâs a no, because it might be a while before she can find another nurse thatâs able to sit in.

This is why Rose doesnât come to parties much. She doesnât know anyone here, and sheâs honestly pretty uncomfortable, and then this guy wonât leave her alone, so she decides that sheâll leave instead. Itâs a bit chilly out, but at least the street is all but abandoned, but for the security guy on the door. Sheâs debating whether or not she wants to go back in (she spent a long time making her hair and makeup look pretty, and it seems like a waste to go home already), when the man seems to notice her discomfort. âHm? Yeah, just hiding from a guy that couldnât understand why I wouldnât give him my number. Iâm starting to think parties might not be my kind of thing.â
despite his status and job, adrien still often helped out friends when they requested someone to watch the door for smaller scale events. he stood, greeting and watching those who entered with watchful eyes. it went quiet, but he spotted a figure to the side of the entrance. â all good ?? â he calls out to them, waving as they turn around.Â

âI wouldnât worry too much. The flu virus is always evolving, usually just small antigenic drifts so we donât even notice that the flu from last year is a little different to the flu from the year before. Sometimes it changes a lot more in a short space of time, thatâs probably whatâs happening now - especially with so many people refusing to vaccinate, these things happen a lot more easily.â This has been most of Roseâs day: flu talk. She was at a walk-in clinic offering flu shots after her classes, and now sheâs winding down with a coffee.
After reading a newspaper, she put it down with a slight thud on a counter of her favorite diner, making her coffee mug jiggle a bit, as she pondered on what she read about the theories regarding the flu. âSo, this is not just a flu, huh?â It was not a crazy theory at all, it was most peopleâs guesses but what really bothered her was what made it not just a flu.Â

he shifts slightly before moving back to sit across the desk, slumping into the seat and nods his head. chase, ready to leave, had close to given up on even making excuses about what to do, but there was a small part of him that still felt the need to protect any access he had to the doctor, as even if not admitted, he was one of the few that wouldnât make him face his biggest vice. chase had been able to conceal his dependency from most, unless he was taken by surprise, such as in this situation. Â
he keeps on thinking, as fast as his mind allows him to, for any excuse that could disguise his desperate needs. as the cogs in his mind turned, he watches her mannerisms in concentration, nodding along with her words. without noticing, had set a soft smile on his features. â  boy does that sound like fun if iâve ever heard it, sad i missed it. â he lets out a soft laugh, finding comfort in her words despite the oncoming guilt he felt in her unfeigned concern. he sighs.  â i mean you could say that, yeah. â he would only tell a white lie, since he did have trouble sleeping. despite his attempt to convince himself, chase found it hard to meet her eye. â sinclair and i have tried a lot of things, i even went to do some sleep studies at this research place, but one thing usually works best. iâve just been really stressed with college stuff. â
He wonât meet Roseâs anxious gaze, but from his voice she supposes it must be because heâs embarrassed, and her heart swells for him. Heâs got no need to be embarrassed, of course, but people often are embarrassed to talk about their health, and the only thing she can do is offer unconditional support without judgement. Itâs hard with things involving pus and blood and fluids, but sheâs already growing desensitised to those things; when a good looking guy comes in to talk about his sleep troubles, it borders on pleasant compared to her other tasks.
Some might say that Rose is naive; sheâs always considered herself suspicious, bordering on paranoid, but she isnât good at telling liars. Her guard would be a little stronger were he after painkillers, but she knows how college can weigh on a mind and steal sleep away. She does think itâs odd that heâs been on the sleep medication for so long, but she can only assume that Doctor Sinclair is monitoring it when Chase comes in for a refill - even if heâs not noted down what checks have been made. He has a face thatâs easy to trust, and Rose doesnât want to think the worst of him.
The vague, foggy voice of doubt doesnât really matter, anyway:Â âWell, usually Iâd say we encourage patients to try other methods before resorting to pills but it sounds like youâve already tried. Unfortunately, Iâm not qualified to write prescriptions, but I can submit your request to Doctor Sinclair and hopefully get it refilled in a day or so. Do you mind if I just do a few quick checks on your health?â she asks, reaching for the blood pressure cuff. Insomnia in itself isnât a huge health risk, but prolonged sleep deprivation can lead to a whole host of nastiness. Besides, sheâs sure Doctor Sinclair wonât write out a prescription if the patient hasnât had a few basic checks.

it hadnât been in chaseâs original intention to show any true aspect of himself, as his visits with the doctor were best described as nonexistent â transactions. it had been especially hard for him to exhibit his usual self-possessed nature under the candor of a narcotic bender, and the presence of the unfeigned, prepossessing nurse. the repercussion lead to what he quickly became aware of, or better described - paranoid of. his incessant rambling. â yeah, i guess i do. my latest piece was about me totally embarrassing myself in front of this nurse whoâs trying to do her job. think i might even get an oscar for it. â chase backtracks his words immediately, mentally rebuking but grinning brazenly at her. Â
he reflects what to say for a moment as he faces the reality of the situation, a panic quickly sets within him. there was no way to obtain the tranquilizers he needed to sleep without the illegitimacy of sinclairâs signature; and there was no way he would reveal that. be it to her or any other person who would get in the way of their business. he shakes his head at her words. â thatâs a shame. iâm â not okay technically, but itâs a pretty complex situation. i only mention it because sinclair knows most of my medical history soâŚyeah. when will he be back ?? â chase watches her reach to the keyboard, with his sensitivity to paranoia, he doesnât move, but begins tapping his foot in reflex. â   i â donât worryâŚabout me. iâm kind of overreacting anyway, i guess i just needed someone to talk to. â he shakes his head as he scoffs lightly at himself again. â iâll just come back when heâs back. i donât want to waste your time with my stupid medical problems, youâve got a lot of flu to deal with. â despite the swiftness of his words, there is a recognized hesitance in his tone.
"Donât go,â she says, quick and soft, because she thinks she can see something dark and rotten eating away inside of Chase, and sheâd never live with herself if she allowed him to walk out of the door without help. âDoctor Sinclair is booked solid today - overbooked, actually, so it might be a few days until youâre able to see him.â
As she speaks, she pulls up his file on the computer. The skill of focusing on the patient while still navigating the computer comes more naturally to Rose and other younger trainees than it does to older generations. âI know itâs hard to trust a stranger when youâve been seeing the same doctor for years, but I promise Iâll do what I can to help. And for the record, youâve not embarrassed yourself at all. I helped scrape out a foot-deep abscess from a womanâs asshole yesterday, so my threshold for weirdness is pretty high.â she continues, gaze drifting alternately between Chase, and the file up on the screen. Her brow furrows; itâs a long history, but it all reads the same. âIs it trouble sleeping, again, Chase?â she asks. Drug seeking behaviour isnât unheard of; in fact, sheâs been specifically warned about it. The thing is, itâs generally painkillers that people are after, not sleeping aids, so sheâs a little unsure. Maybe heâs just got terrible insomnia.

âFair enough,â Rose says, willing to take it at face value. âThat sounds so good, like holy cow, itâs been months since I took some time to myself. Letâs do nails as well, itâs practically Christmas and I need more red glitter in my life.â

phelvns:
Itâs not that Benjiâs parents are bad people; Ulysses has spoken with both of them multiple times and the best word to describe them is harried. They both work long hours and have to juggle their shifts with raising their kids. Ulysses is sympathetic and is that one of them will call them back when they get the chance. In the mean time, Ulysses is fine with taking care of Benji.
They rest a gentle hand on the boyâs shoulder. Benji is scared and in pain and Ulysses knows that. Heâs just a kid, turning seven in a couple weeks. He curls into the touch, wanting comfort. Itâll be good when his parents can get there. âA little bit,â they respond to the nurseâs questions. âHe said it really hurt and that he wanted his parents. He was able to put a little weight on it earlier but I carried him to the car and in here.â
This is one of the first times that Rose really has to pull up all of her training in her mind. Most of the patients sheâs seen so far have been cut and dry, thatâs definitely a burn, or thatâs certainly a deep laceration, and she can redirect them accordingly. But if the kid has a sprain, heâll just need an elastic compression wrap, but if itâs broken heâll need a cast.
âSomethingâs definitely a little out of place,â she says, addressing both the kid, and Ulysses. Younger patients arenât always the best at absorbing medical information, especially not when theyâre in pain. Sheâs pretty sure heâs not in shock, just shocked - and there is a difference there. He wonât die of being shocked. âTo see whether itâs broken or sprained, weâll need to go for an X-Ray. Shouldnât take too long, it looks busy here but most of our patients today are flu-related. Hang on and Iâll grab a wheelchair - bit easier than coach doing the firemanâs lift everywhere.â She nips around the corner to get the chair, parking it in front of the kid. âAlright, Benji, can you stand on your strong foot? Lean on me if you like,â she offers with a supportive smile.

A wary one. Alyosha has a love-hate relationship with these ones â love because they provide some much needed interest after a day of fools, hate because theyâre rarely that profitable. Still, his expression doesnât falter at her hesitance. âI wouldnât call it luck really⌠I lay three cards on the table, you just have to follow the ace as I shuffle them and pick it when Iâm done.â
Ah, sheâs heard of games like this. It seems so easy, but heâll move the cards about so quick Rose wonât even notice him shifting them about under his hand, so it looks like the ace is in the middle, but actually itâs on the left. âWhat if I shuffle them and you pick the ace?â she asks; not because sheâs got any skill at sleight of hand and thinks sheâll trick him. But Rose doesnât really like losing and it seems like less of a loss if youâre the shuffler and the opponent picks the ace, than if youâre the opponent and you donât pick the ace.

âOh,â Roseâs face falls, a mirror for his, as she looks at the greasy bag. She could never eat a burger.
