She had a bad habit of calling on him like they both had nothing better to do, but here he was, stepping up to her door at all hours at night and knocking – briefly but loudly. If he couldn’t get his beauty sleep, then no one else was.

The tavern was overloaded tonight for what seemed like no good reason, but if he had a chance to escape the doldrums of everyday life, then that was reason enough. Elbowing his way to the bar, he ordered his drink with little ceremony and was five paces away before he was getting shouted down. 

Rostam swiveled on his heel to meet his verbal assailant, one dark brow arched. "Look, I just paid for this,” he responded over the loud thrum of the crowd. He eyed the glass in her hand suspiciously. “Y’know you shouldn’t accept drinks from strangers.”
