itsolgood:
Ollie was panting the more they tread up the incline behind Ruby, starting to groan from how hot they were. They were easily affected by strong temperatures along with other textures and noises, so they just wanted to be able to sit somewhere in the shade and enjoy the picnic. “Are we almost there?” they called. “My legs hurt! And I’m hot!” they said, but when they saw what Ruby was talking about their excessive excitement wasn’t shy about popping back out. “Oooh,” they said as they looked around, their hands flapping at their sides. “So pretty! The sky is so blue today! Ya wanna sit under the tree?”
"Almost.” She called out over her shoulder to Ollie. Their sentiments were reflected by Ruby who was indeed feeling the burn in her calf muscles. The view of the town against the crisp blue sky was enough to make her forget that though and the beads of sweat on her forehead, and she was very glad it had gotten Ollie onside too. “Like a cornflower blue. My favourite kind.” Ruby mused, a small smile emerging on her lips at the other’s excitement. “Hell yeah, out of this heat.” As they reached the foot of the shade, Ruby spread the picnic blanket out and knelt down onto it with the picnic basket at her hands. “Now, I couldn’t decide between salmon, salad or prosciutto sandwiches...” She began as she pulled out the platter of neatly quartered sandwiches. “So I made all three.”

Just like the juice of the peach that ran down her forearm, the sun was sticky on Ruby’s bare shoulders. Still, she wouldn’t be convinced that a swim was what she needed. She could cool herself off enough with her feet dipped into the pool and the stone fruit in her hand. “I don’t think so...” Ruby crinkled her nose up at the other's suggestion of a swim and suckled up the nectar that had skidded down her arm. “It needs to be at least eighty degrees out for me to get in.” @shstarters

Jacob: quick.
Jacob: is a hot dog a sandwich? 🌭
Jacob: it's for science
Ruby: Absolutely not.
Ruby: Jacob, how dare you insult sandwiches like that.

the piano knows something i don’t know, emperor’s new clothes
the piano knows something i don’t know: do you play any musical instruments? if so, when did you start learning them?
"Several, in fact. I started playing the violin and piano when I was six years old. I was classically trained in both until I was seventeen. I picked up my first guitar at eleven and fell in love. At sixteen I learned to play the base guitar and fell in love for the second time. I’ve tried drums, but I’ve never mastered more than a couple of basic drum beats. Since I met The Dogwood Blossoms, I’ve also learned the harmonica and the French horn.”
emperor’s new clothes: how similar are you to the way you were three years ago?
"I’d like to think so. I don’t think I’ve ever really changed much. A little more bitter and jaded, sure, but I’ve always known who I am in my very core.”

‘so i ran with dreams to reach the skyline and straight up that incline, i ran towards the blue’ – leadlight - julia jacklin
“C’mon, hon!” Ruby was breathless and giggly as her slender legs trucked up the incline. A picnic at the top of the tallest hill in the park had seemed like a wonderful idea at the time. But she’d not been here since she was seventeen and she didn’t remember it being this steep. Hiking the picnic basket a little further over her shoulder, she turned to Ollie with a small smirk curling her lips. “The view is worth it, I promise.” ( @itsolgood )

‘daisy, baby, are you driving home? 'cause this baby doesn't want to walk alone’ – daisy - pond
Despite her firm words (and then some), a stranger she’d spoken to earlier in the evening was still making eyes at her across the bar. Their gaze felt uncomfortable on Ruby and she was desperate to shrug it off. Dark eyes caught Cassia standing up from stool on the other edge of the group, so Ruby leapt at the chance. “Did you drive home, hon? Mind if I grab a lift?” ( @oftenderveins )

‘all the people look like ants from up here and the wind's the only traffic you can hear’ – elevator operator - courtney barnett
Ruby’s back was pressed up against the concrete ledge at the edge of The Green Room’s rooftop -- a secret area she’d been gifted the knowledge of in her recent artist’s tour of the venue. “It’s beautiful up here, isn’t it?” She asked Dodge. Her dark eyes peered up at him from the cigarette she was rolling tightly between her fingers. “It reminds me of the city. Everyone seems so peaceful several stories up.” ( @iamdodge )

maddoxsaviano:
“Probably. I mean, I don’t really remember that far back. It was the eighties”, Maddox said. To her, there would be no benefit to claiming she was younger, but he didn’t do that either. He could joke about it and acknowledge he looked younger than he was, but he wasn’t really at all subtle about it that he was old. “I know. Makes me a happier cook”, he said. He was always happy to cook, but getting to go through farmer’s markets to find what he was going to cook with was part of the fun for him. “That sounds awesome. I love jazz”, he said. New York was nothing special, a lot of hype with not much content but if there was a reason to go, he’d go. “How’s that going? Your music?”
“Oh, what was that like?” Ruby patted her hand over her clavicle as she posed the question. “Did you ever stand outside a girl’s house holding a boombox over your head?” She was teasing, but honestly it sounded a lot better that being sixteen in the 2010’s. “Oh, absolutely. Case in point.” She gestured her open hand towards the grazing plate. “I mean, not that I’ve cooked it. But I really like it when things have a story. Food especially.” Ruby flashed her eyes gently at Maddox as she reached for a slice of fig and popped it into her mouth. “Watch this space then.” Ruby said on a sip of wine. Mentally marking the dates off in her head. “Really well, actually. Nothing like a nightmare of a relationship to get the creative juices going…” An eyebrow arched as she gulped down a bigger sip of wine. “I always wonder about you, Maddox. Is being a cartoonist a creative outlet? I mean, I know it is insofar as being a creator. But what about your anger? Your heartbreak? Where does that go, you know?”
