Dholera Semiconductor Hub: Tata’s Chip Fabricatrion & 1,500 Homes by 2026
Tata Electronics is setting a historic milestone by building India’s first semiconductor fabrication unit in Dholera, Gujarat. This move marks a significant leap forward in India’s ambition to become self-reliant in chip manufacturing. The fabrication facility is being developed under the India Semiconductor Mission, a flagship initiative by the Government of India, aiming to position the country as a global hub for semiconductor production.
To support the workforce and operational ecosystem around this high-tech facility, the Gujarat government is simultaneously developing over 1,500 residential units in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR). These homes are primarily intended for engineers, technicians, and staff affiliated with Tata Electronics, including key partners and suppliers. Approximately 275 apartments have already been completed, with around 250 of them currently occupied. An additional 225 units are near completion, and construction is underway for another 1,000, which are expected to be ready by early 2026.
In addition to these state-led residential developments, Tata Electronics has also acquired 10 acres of land within the Dholera SIR to construct another 530 housing units exclusively for its employees. This private project is expected to be completed by mid-2027, ensuring ample accommodation as the plant scales up operations.
The residential push is part of a much larger ecosystem being developed around the fab site. Plans include vital infrastructure such as a fire station, hospital, international school, water desalination plant, hotel, and even a tent city offering global cuisines. The goal is to create a self-sufficient, modern township that can attract and retain top talent from across the world—making it easier for both domestic and expatriate professionals to live and work in Dholera without compromise.
The semiconductor plant, which is backed by an estimated investment of ₹91,000 crore, is expected to generate over 20,000 direct and indirect job opportunities. According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, chip production from the facility is slated to begin by December 2026. This project not only represents a technological breakthrough for India but also a massive economic opportunity for the region.
As India strives to reduce its dependence on imported semiconductors, Tata Electronics’ venture is being viewed as a game-changer. It showcases how public-private collaboration, forward-looking policy, and infrastructural readiness can come together to lay the foundation for a robust electronics and manufacturing ecosystem in the country.

In a strategic move set to elevate Gujarat’s position on the global trade map, the Ministry of Finance, via the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), has officially notified Dholera as a recognized customs port. This landmark development now authorizes Dholera for the unloading of imports and loading of exports — ushering in a new era for the region’s logistics ecosystem.
This status not only reinforces Dholera’s rising importance but also strengthens the backbone of its upcoming infrastructure, especially with the Dholera International Airport on track to launch operations by June or July 2025. Interestingly, the airport will kick off its journey by focusing on international air cargo services, catering to both freighter aircraft and passenger planes carrying cargo.
To get things rolling, Dholera International Airport Company Limited (DIACL) has already opened tenders inviting experienced contractors to manage the international cargo terminal and ground handling services. These contracts are set for a tenure of seven years, ensuring operational consistency during the airport’s initial phase. DIACL has made its intentions clear — international cargo movement will be the primary focus in Phase 1, with operations targeted to go live by mid-2025.
