Runewriters Will Not Be Continued

Hey gang, it’s been a little while. Wanted to make an official update.

So, the short version: Runewriters will not be continued for the foreseeable future. I’d like to put together a post to share how the rest of the comic was planned to go, but it’ll take some time to figure out how to put that together.

Obviously I can’t say with 100% certainty that I will never return to this story, but I think I am finished with it. This is a decision I thought really hard about – is there some way I could do a paired down version, or a very sketchy version, without dipping right back into burnout? This is a comic that ended before it ever got to a lot of things that I really wanted to share. But… ultimately I think, I can’t keep holding out hope that some future version of myself will want to finish this. As dear as Runewriters has always been to me, I can’t imagine coming back and working on it again. I still really appreciate how much folks invested in it; it genuinely means so much to me still today, and I’m sorry that I no longer have the rest of the story in me to give you.

Here is a comic by Valerie Halla that resonated with me… a lot, while I was trying to make sense of this decision. Obviously, she wrote that for her, not me – but she really captured feelings I couldn’t put to words.

That said, I’d really like to come back at some point and put together, like, a little rundown of concept art and synopsis for Runewriters, just a little something to share what the story would’ve been and the ideas I had, to kind of resolve it. I’d like to not keep spoilers for a comic I’m never going to finish locked up inside my head, haha. And there’s a couple of characters you guys never even got to MEET! I’d like to let people meet them, even if it’s just through me and the ideas I had. Maybe it’s silly to do this so far after the last update; after all, I don’t know how long it’ll take me to put together, and I’d like to wait until I have friends nearby to help me organise it, and that’s a long time to wait for a story that won’t really be finished. But I’d still like to do it!I think that’s all I’ve got. I don’t know if I’m going to do another comic eventually. I don’t have anything else lined up! I’m still drawing, but less focused on PROFESSIONAL PROJECTS at the moment.

Runewriters Hiatus Update

It's July! So it's time for me to update you on what's going on with the comic, and with me. The conclusion I've come to is that I'm gonna need to put Runewriters on indefinite hiatus. I wanna check in at the start of each year and let you guys know if anything's changed or if we're still in chill mode, but other than that, I'll probably be quiet over here.

There's a couple reasons -- the smaller reason is that my current comicking method isn't sustainable, and I need to find a method to produce work I'm happy with that won't wreck my hand in the process! The larger reason is that I'm really creatively burnt out on Runewriters.

It's tough to describe. It's still a story I'm attached to and really want to tell, but sitting down and thinking about it at all is... exhausting. I do need to set it aside completely, without pushing myself to figure out when I can Get Back Into It. In the meantime, as some of you may have heard, I've gotten a job! I'm now an artist for Tattered Weave -- I've started making some of their tiny clothes and other art assets that haven't been released yet. It's really exciting! I was always worried about getting an art job like this, afraid I wouldn't have time to work on my stories anymore. But right now, while I can't work on my story, it's a really great opportunity to keep creating and solving creative problems without putting pressure on myself to Produce and Monetise Personal Content. Will Runewriters come back? I hope so! ...I know that this isn't a question I can answer with certainty -- losing touch with your own story while on hiatus is a tale as old as time, and RW is a big story I can't just crank out. I know how scary an announcement like this is. I don't wanna push through burnout and produce a bad comic, but it's still a story I really hope to tell. I can't plan or predict how things will go -- I do want to finish it as soon as I'm able! But at this point, we'll have to wait and see. I can only promise to keep you guys posted as much as possible! ( I'm still deciding what to do about the store. I think I'll probably put up book four sometime this week and leave it open for a month or two and then close it until I'm up and doing stuff again? I'll keep you guys posted!! ) If you just wanna keep up with my art, I'm still on tumblr and twitter, and my patreon is switching over to be sketchblog posts and livestreams for folks who just wanna see the stuff I do for fun while I'm taking a break! Thanks to everyone who's been so kind through all this. This is scary, and I know it's definitely not what y'all were hoping for, but I know it's what I need to do! Thank you all for being so supportive and understanding while I figure this stuff out. <3

So, here's the deal. The original plan was to update on Patreon, and once I'd built up enough pages to post over here, to kinda do a chunk of pages, a full scene, so that despite the wait it could feel like a satisfying amount of content. But while taking the time to go slower gave me the freedom to draw other things and help me recharge a lot, I found myself dreading the pages themselves. I've definitely had times with this comic where I had to kinda push through feeling uninspired or not being up to drawing. But... I've always been excited to bring the finished thing into being in the end. Lately, not so much; it's felt like slogging through a chore just to get it done. Runewriters is super important to me, and Lord willing, it's a story I really wanna tell! But like, I'm making this thing because I love it, and I want it to have love and joy in it. So what's going on? Things are a lil rough sometimes but I'm not Super Busy outside of RW and patreon -- is it burnout? Do I need to step away? To build up a buffer? Do I need to fix something in the script? Do I need another hiatus? Do I need to work out Real Life Stuff first? I don't wanna keep everybody in the dark while I figure out what I'm doing, but it's a lot to think through! SO FOR NOW: I think I'm gonna take, like, a month, to get sorted. In February, start of February, I'll come in and let you guys know whether or not the Shazz saw her shadow and what my actual plan for RW is. THE PLAN MIGHT BE A HIATUS. But whatever it is, it'll be whatever I think will make me most able to actually make a good comic. ;u; And... thank you to everyone for your kind words and support while the schedule has been weird. ;u; I know it's always a scary thing when webcomics go on long breaks, and even though there's a lot of uncertainty right now I'm gonna try my best to keep you guys posted!!
