If multiple characters have the same native language but have also lived in the same non-native country for a long time, you can throw in a couple of nouns from the non-native language when theyâre speaking their native language to each other (not always)
Make characters use inflection of native language with verbs of target language. Have them use this new creation when theyâre speaking their native language as well (not always)
If you want to show it in your writing, make characters randomly pronounce words in the target language with a thick accent from their native language.
If your story includes a setting at an educational institution, have teachers mispronounce the names of your characters. Over and over again. No matter how easy the names are.
As everyone else has said already, make characters forget words from any language they speak (also native). One of my friends who speaks three languages once forgot a word in all of them and tried to explain it to me in Portuguese when thatâs exactly the one language of her three languages I donât understand đ
Make characters mishear words/phrases/expressions. A friend of mine misheard âgistâ as âjizzâ and just went around using the phrase âgetting the jizz of itâ for months before she told me how strange she thinks that phrase is and I corrected her đ
Make characters randomly use filler words from native language

im going to have a stroke

It's a little surprising that the "Monday's child is fair of face" nursery rhyme never caught on as an arbitrary personality-assigner in the same way astrology did. It makes the same amount of sense.

The Reagan adminstration's infamous response to AIDS informed the writing of Stranger Things
One of the showâs most significant, and often overlooked, narrative threads is the AIDS crisis. It's never mentioned directly â it's subtextual.
While this perspective on the series isnât new, itâs still one many find uncomfortable or inaccessible. But it shouldnât be. The showâs connection to the AIDS crisis is neither niche nor optional; itâs key to grasping the full weight of its themes.
SOMETHING EVIL IS SPREADING
THERE HAVE BEEN UNEXPLAINED DEATHS
IT'S LIKE A DISEASE
OR SOME KIND OF VIRUS
THEY CALL IT "GAY PLAGUE"
At first, it appears that mostly young and otherwise healthy gay men are affected.
Itâs possible Billy was a closeted bisexual. Even if that wasnât the writersâ intention, they deliberately draw a parallel between Will and Billy â two young men (sharing the same birth name) who are abused for being perceived as queer, and who both become infected with a mysterious âvirus.â Billyâs susceptibility to the Mind Flayer can also be read as tied to his sexual activity; heâs infected while on his way to an illicit sexual encounter. It's why Billy's death is so polarizing among viewers: it's framed as both karmic and tragic. You're meant to feel that tension and grapple with it. What does that moral tension reveal about how AIDS was perceived in conservative 1980s America? And no, this isnât âBilly apologiaâ â his abusive and racist behavior is intentional, designed to make us recognize him as immoral, and framed in a way that aligns with contemporary sensibilities.
AT FIRST, IT'S DISMISSED BY PEOPLE IN POWER
The authorities are intially dismissive regarding both Willâs disappearance and the diseased pumpkins â and later become in over their heads when deaths begin occurring en masse. All of these instances are related to the âdiseaseâ aka the Upside Down. The Reagan adminstration was also dismissive of the emergence of the disease, refusing to directly acknowledge it or make a statement in 1982.
EVENTUALLY THEY START LOOKING INTO IT
A year after Will is found, Hopper is now less dismissive of strange happenings in Hawkins â he urges Dr. Owens to look into the diseased pumpkins. Will now also attends regular check-ups to monitor the "disease" aka Upside Down related symptoms. Almost a year after AIDS was first mentioned in a press conference, Reagan's press secretary Larry Speakes finally claims they are allocating funds to researching the disease, though he is still mostly dismissive and making light of the situation.
BUT IT'S STILL TREATED AS A JOKE
Like Mike, journalist Lester Kinsolving is disturbed that this crisis is being looked upon as a joke. In 1983, Larry Speakes makes his infamous homophobic joke about "fairies" referencing the AIDS crisis - he directs this to Kinsolving. That is the same year Troy makes his own homophobic joke about "fairies" making light of Will's apparent death.
GAY SEX IS THE PUNCHLINE (AND THE BLAME)
Troy suggests that Will wasnât killed by a murderer or hate-crimed, but by another âqueer.â Troy's father frames Willâs death as the result of an encounter with a gay man âperhaps even while âcruising.â In this warped view, such an act wouldnât register as violence against a child, because Willâs queerness is conflated with hypersexuality and perversion. His death is reframed as humiliating and âkarmicâ from a homophobic perspective. This mirrors the sentiment of the reporter who baited the White House into commenting on cruising. Such rhetoric perpetuated three of the most harmful anti-gay beliefs during the AIDS crisis: 1) Gay men were inherently promiscuous. 2) Gay men were predatory toward young boys. 3) Gay men were solely to blame for the epidemic.
THE PATIENTS ARE REFERRED TO AS WALKING CORPSES
Will is nick-named "Zombie Boy" â a walking dead. Protestors of the ACT UP coalition begin performing "die-ins" â a form of protest in which they feign death.
BECAUSE IT'S BEYOND A CURE
Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is found to be an effective treatment â but it's not a cure. Testing began in 1985, but it wasn't until 1987 that the first antiretroviral drug became FDA approved. Will uses literal art as his own form of therapy â with a "The Cure" poster framed beside him.
In 1988, an article on the use of music therapy for AIDS patients is published in the medical journal Music Therapy Perspectives.
Of course, it cannot âtreatâ AIDS. Rather, it is used to provide psychological comfort to terminal patients, assisting them with the process of accepting illness and death. Music is able to provide comfort to Max and ward off Vecna â but only temporarily.
NOW, IT'S KILLING THE KIDS
Vecna begins targeting teenagers from Hawkins High. Both Chrissy and Fred display interest in the opposite sex: Chrissy is dating Jason, and Fred has a crush on Nancy. Patrick's sexuality is unknown. In 1985, a child with AIDS attends school in Queens. Parents protest chanting, âTwo, four, six, eight, no AIDS in any grades!â In a 1985 article written by journalist Evan Thomas he states, "Now children and heterosexuals are seen as vulnerable."
SO IT MUST BE DIVINE PUNISHMENT
We're lead back to Jason's impromptu sermon: this popular straight, white, and WASPy blonde teen (a poster boy for all-American conformity) invokes the bible to rally the townspeople into a mass hysteria. The Upside Down (and Vecna) is branching out into Hawkins â it's not only The Party and those they closely associate with that are affected anymore. AIDS is now understood as an epidemic which can affect everyone, not just homosexuals and intravenous drug users ("freaks" and outcasts). Hence, a moral panic ensues.

Anyone else fuck with individual songs? Who is the artist? I dunno. What album is it from? Shut up. What year was it released? *tim allen grunt* What's the title of the track? Fuck you. But it goes like this: *poorly memorized chorus*
I love that song. Do not ask me anything about it.
