not to be radical or whatever, but i think that maybe calling women and queer people “pedophiles” for fanfiction is actually not the activism you think it is

if you are anti-ao3, you are pro-censorship
if you believe archive of our own needs to be shut down, you support active censorship
ao3 was created during a time when corporations were trying to actively capitalize on fan content. ao3 was created to circumvent the encroaching censorship in the fanfiction community. and this is not just censorship in the form of limiting mature content: authors were barred from writing for certain fandoms. authors were prohibited from using certain formatting decisions in their writing. authors weren’t able to moderate comments on their own works. authors were not able to properly tag and provide accurate trigger warnings for their works in ways that were easily accessible to readers.
archive of our own provided so much for the fan community, and continues to provide a valuable space for writers and fans alike. it is invaluable. fans deserve spaces free of trivial censorship and free of corporate presence. fans deserve ao3.

A post: "Ship whatever you want, it's all fiction, it literally doesn't matter. Stop harassing people over fiction."
The same person, five minutes later: "I'm so tired of these motherfuckers who ship [female character] with men. She is canonically attracted to women, what's so hard to understand about that?! We need to kick these assholes out of the fandom right now."
(First off, the hypocrisy is off the charts. Secondly, the character they were talking about has shown attraction to both men and women.)
Every damn time

You know I find it very weird when people make fun of trans men’s names and then it’s just …. Popular names.
Like woah a trans man named himself Oliver ?? Crazy. It’s almost as if it’s been in the top 100 popular boys names for the past 4 years or something.

It's like people forget (or just don't care) that physical transition can be really taxing on the body, and for some people, it just isn't an option.
Even binding safely is expected to lead to back pain and breathing problems. Medical transition isn't just getting injected with T juice and a seamless, easy removal of the breasts and then looking like a respectable cis-passing trans person.
"Miniskirt, makeup, but he/him" is a derogatory stereotype of young transmascs who wear what is considered feminine clothing and makeup. It's just so incredibly baffling to me that people will claim to not be transphobic and then act like transmascs need the bodies of cis-men to be able to wear the clothes they want.

people who are like "uhoiujh uhhhh well it's literally impossible for people to medically transition in the fallout universe 🙄🙄🙄 stupid lgbts thinking they would have any room to survive in a post apocalyptic world 🙄🙄🙄 keep politics out of my games"
people are able to get glasses and are able to manufacture antibiotics/other medications. there are people with body mods, prosthetics, and surgeries, if we're making this a real world issue. they also make robots that look and act exactly like humans to the point that they themselves don't know that they're robots, there are giant murderous bipedal lizards originally engineered by the united states military to be used in combat, and massive green humanoid fuckers running around and eating people.
also? it's not fucking real. get a grip

This happens in the radqueer community every couple of months. Something new is coined/new belief becomes popular and there's a flurry of people desperately trying to say that the radqueer community is still good, or whatever. Not saying all radqueers are xenosatanists or hypoharmfuls or pro-abuse, but eventually you have to start seeing the pattern.

It's apparently sexual assault to masturbate to the idea of someone without getting their permission first. I've been suddenly thrown back into 2015 Tumblr

If we're placing people into "normal" and "weird" categories based on the public's opinion and how we interact with fiction, furries are right in there with fandom folk. To a lot of people, furries are the weirdest people they can imagine. To a lot of people, furries are zoophiles, predators, weirdos, and just creeps for the art they enjoy (even if it's SFW furry artwork, even if the person is a teenager).
It's kind of funny too, because you can pretty much say "right back at you" for whatever anti-fiction furries say to you in discourse.
This might be a weird beef, and my 'evidence' is also most probably anecdotal, but I swear this happens so often I could conduct a social study, so I thought I'd share!
So I casually keep engaging with fandom on twitter and tumblr, and of course I come across all kinds of people, pros and antis and secret third things too.
I mostly try to stay in the 'normal person who doesn't hurt anyone' space, cultivating my internet experience, as you do, no matter what I do though, there be antis in the replies and quotes with the usual brain dead takes, and they always yell at people like "shut up weirdo!! you're weird!!! you're Weirdy McWeirderton!!!"
But that's not the surprising part. The surprising part is that 90% of the time if I check such a person's profile... they're a furry. Their account is months, years of sharing or making furry art or cosplaying such themes, sfw and nsfw too.
Now, listen - I would be spitting in my own eye if I had anything against them enjoying what they enjoy, so this is not about that. We have different tastes, and that's perfectly fine.
But OBJECTIVELY SPEAKING. My guy. My dude. In the eyes of majority society. Or imagine like, in the eyes of my Eastern European grandma who is 72 and watches soap operas.
"WEIRD" starts with... you. It's you! It's not a 15 year old and a 17 year old kid dating. (Fictional, no less...) Childhood friends becoming lovers is not incestuous, and it's super insulting to say so. I don't pretend to know what sheltered life antis live where you never have crushes on classmates or never meet anyone on the beach or at guitar practice, but these are literally the most common things in real life! What ISN'T common though - in "normie" circles, on the 'adult with a job' pane of existence - is liking anthropomorphic animals after you've turned older than 12.
Again, I have nothing against if you do. I genuinely mean that.
I genuinely believe we ALL deserve space, this is why I'd like everyone to understand that the OBJECTIVE definition of 'weird' is NOT the proshippers and whatever the hell 'illegality' antis keep accusing them of. To me this common use of "weird" as a 'gotcha' is just funny and illogical. THEIR fantasies would literally not be accepted anywhere except on the internet and its blissful options to stay anonymous, and yet they keep harrassing people for entertaining the same.
Has anyone ever noticed any other specific pattern like that?
Oh yeah it’s super common

It kind of sucks that being pro-fiction has been reduced to just "person who beats it to lolicon and ships incest" because, well, besides the fact that's a weird uncomfortable thing to assume about people, being pro-fiction is about so much more than supporting the freedom to write or read that kind of thing in fiction.
It's about supporting BDSM in fiction, "cringe" queer art/fic, "cringe" stories, badly written fanfic, rare pairs, ships that are unpopular, fanfiction that ignores canon, people being able to post their stories online without being bullied, being able to be in fandom without being bullied over everything I listed above and more, not to mention basic pro-fiction beliefs (like knowing you can read something without it corrupting you) and being against anti-fiction outside of fandom too (fuck book bans).
I don't know; a lot of pro-fiction people just want fandom to be a nice place and for people to realise that you can read something bad in fiction critically, and suggesting otherwise feels kind of ignorant.

Don't talk about how you're concerned about people getting triggered when you accuse random people of condoning or being rapists, pedophiles, zoos, or groomers over shipcourse and labels, thanks.

antis have normalized sexual harassment against people on social media and not even minors are safe from that treatment
Quite recently a 15 year old was called out and called a pedophile for following anime accounts that post lewd pictures by people older than them, and when others who came to their defense said it caused the 15 yo to have a mental breakdown and to consider SELF HARMING themselves, the antis who called them out played it down as “asking for pity” and proceeded to call them nonce, groomer, being groomed and needing to get help.
and here I thought antis care about minors /s
They care about minors the same way they care about survivors: only so long as they toe the anti line

i love reading sad books bc when your own grief is stopped up inside you like a clogged drain you can grieve for a character on a page and understand that you're also grieving for yourself a little bit
