i'll defend fanfic for my whole life. like the joy it brings is genuinely transformative and indulgent in a way unique to the genre. it isn't meant for a market, it isn't meant to be sold or marketed. it is born out of such care and passion for a media that one must write and must share it, so other folks can enjoy it to. for no other reason than love and joy. do you know how special that is? especially in our current social and political climate.

This is a key moment for both the core themes of BNHA and for Izuku's character development. I've mentioned it before, but a key ideological difference between All Might and Izuku is that Izuku rejects the idea of inherently villainous quirks.

The hero society created from the traumatic foundation of the Dawn of Quirks and upheld by the pillar that was the Symbol of Peace narrowly defined what inherent traits were heroic and villainous. Heroes have human faces because heteromorphs remind people too much of the fear from the origin of quirks. They have flashy, entertaining emitter quirks with perfect control and are approved by the government.

Quirks or other meta secondary characteristics outside of this framework that are difficult/impossible to control, suppress, or conceal are inherently considered villainous. Because hero society views people as their quirks, having a villainous quirk/appearance causes people to be treated as inherently on the path to villainy, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So it's important that Izuku rejects this framework entirely. There are no villainous or heroic quirks, only people who choose to use their power in heroic or villainous ways. Eri's power is technically villainous from hero society's perspective. She accidently killed her father with it and almost killed Izuku because she couldn't control Rewind. People lost their quirks temporarily or permanently due to the quirk erasing bullets made from her quirk factor, including one of the hopefuls for next Symbol. This is the same society that blamed Bakugou being kidnapped for All Might's end even when Explosion was irrelevant to that situation.

This conversation with Izuku communicates two things to Eri: (1) Rewind can be used for good if she works hard and (2) she can still be a good person. She has other paths available to her other than villainy or constantly suppressing herself out of fear of an inherent villainous nature. And...this is exactly what Tenko needed someone to tell him after the death of his family. He wasn't inherently evil for a child's quirk accident and could have a future where he was true to himself within society.

This is also Izuku projecting his own situation onto Eri. Izuku just faced the reality that One for All wasn't just the torch passed down by the ideal hero. It was a power created through the violation of Yoichi's bodily autonomy and includes similar characteristics of the quirk of their world's greatest villain. Despite that, Izuku chose to accept One for All and move forward as a hero.

Anyway, early Eri and Izuku had such a rich dynamic. They both inherently defied the deterministic and eugenicist aspects of their society. They opposed the concept of fate and emphasized the importance of cooperation and free will in the Overhaul Arc. And in Joint Training Arc, they rejected the concept of inherently villainous quirks. Unfortunately, their dynamic and Izuku's connection to this theme stagnates from here.

I don't know where they come from, or what purpose this could possibly serve other than suicidebaiting random people in the internet, I guess; but apparently they've started parroting names from real users to send these comments and shifting their general length to go by undetected. Maybe those are scrappers trying to train 'reviewbots' to be sold as part of some scam service promising to give feedback for newbie writers, who the fuck knows.
