RVA Meeting Notes (December 12)
REPORT BACK FROM TONIGHT'S MEETING! Thanks to some confusion (I'm in error for this), 4 people attended tonight's meeting. Didn't catch the fact that the address of CrossRoads was the wrong one. Meeting took place at CrossRoads Ice Cream and Coffee on Forest Hill Ave. (not Morris St. as the event indicated). It last approximately one hour and 15 minutes. Meeting adjourned at around 7:20pm. The need to gear up for next year's elections (House of Delegates, Governor/Lt. Governor, Attorney General) was discussed. This discussion included identifying and building up support systems (e.g. fundraising, canvassing, promotion, endorsements, etc.) for people who would like to run for one of these offices as a member of the Green Party. There was discussion about building a issues-based platform that candidates could push for during the election cycle. This included marijuana decriminalization, abolishing the PILOT law, putting a "Move To Amend" constitutional amendment to a statewide ballot, support for Ranked Choice/Instant Runoff Voting, and other strong policy positions that will allow voters to make the stark contrast between us and other political parties. Discussion of the actions of the Richmond Democrats was also a part of tonight's meeting. Next meeting to be determined, but it will be at a more centrally-located place (preferably near VCU or in that area), Erin or Tyler, would y'all be able to help reserve a space for us in VCU sometime next month? Scott, please add in anything I missed.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. CT on Aug. 6 during the Green Party’s 2016 national convention, Greens chose Jill Stein and running mate Ajamu Baraka to be the party’s presidential and vice-presidential nominees.
Dr. Stein was nominated after receiving a majority of votes in the first round of voting. She received 239.5 out of 293 total votes (81.7%) cast by Green delegates from across the U.S.
Along with the nomination, highlights of the convention included speeches by Julian Assange (via live feed from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London), YahNé Ndgo, and Dr. Cornel West on Saturday and events welcoming former supporters of Bernie Sanders. Videos and texts of many of the speeches are in the press release linked below.
CNN will air a town hall event with Dr. Stein and Mr. Baraka on Wednesday, August 17 at 9:00 p.m. ET, live on CNN, CNN International, CNN en Espanol, and online via CNNgo ( http://www.cnn.it/go ).
Green Party delegates also voted to confirm the party’s new national platform ( http://www.gp.org/platform_2016 ).

RVA Green Party Reestablished [Press Release by Our Fernando]
For the fifth consecutive year Gallup polls show that over 40% of Americans identify as political independents (42% in 2015). As the nation’s two dominant parties receive more campaign finance contributions from special interests, the voice of the masses has all but disappeared. Americans are becoming and feeling more and more disenfranchised and it has peaked as they realize the two major party candidates have the highest unfavorable ratings in recent history. This feeling of resentment and frustration due to the lack of true representation in our federal government is mirrored throughout the country at the local level. Last Thursday, June 23 the Richmond Green Party was reestablished at the Henrico Child Advocacy Center to tackle this issue. Local activists, Green Party veterans, and disillusioned Democrats met for the first time in Richmond in over five years to discuss the future of progressive ideas and values in the city and the country at large. Scott Burger, a longtime Richmond Green Party organizer, set the meeting off by presenting a brief history of Richmond Greens. John and Michelle Delehanty shared their experiences fighting for the 10 Key Values in California in the 90s before moving to Virginia. Mary Gale Atkins spoke about her life fighting for environmental and social justice by organizing her community at the grassroots level. Finally, Montigue Magruder, formerly a member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and currently running for the 5th District of Richmond city council seat, touched on his experience fighting for the $15 minimum wage. Many others were eager to share and listen to stories that inspired them to join the Green Party. Group members proceeded to discuss long and short-term objectives for the Richmond based party. The first goal of the party is to increase interest, turnout, and participation of community stakeholders. This will be done by expanding Richmond Green Party presence on social media and writing letters and op-eds to local news sites and blogs. The Richmond Green Party will also focus on reaching out to university students, especially Bernie Sanders and Jill Stein supporters, when the Fall semester commences. Finally, members will look to form coalitions with community groups that already adhere to the Green Party 10 Key Values. The second objective is to run and endorse local candidates whose values align with those of the Green Party or are Green Party members themselves. At the meeting the Richmond Green Party voted to endorse Montigue Magruder for the 5th District of Richmond city council seat. The third objective is to get Green Party presidential candidate, Jill Stein, on the Virginia ballot by petitioning individually and as a group. The last objective is to focus on local issues that are significant to Richmond Green Party members and to take a public stance on those issues. This will be discussed in more detail when the Richmond Green Party reconvenes in late August or early September. Be on the lookout for information about the next meeting, which the date, time, and location is TBD.

In a major development, the Green Party took a key step towards declaring itself Eco-socialist. The party’s National Committee voted Sunday night to approve a proposed amendment to the party’s platform entitled “Ecological Economics.” The proposed platform position declares that the Green Party is anti-capitalist and in favor of a decentralized vision socialism.
