The other night I had the absolute privilege to finally meet up with and chat to @carlyfindlay, who is an absolute powerhouse in disability activism. I’m often reluctant to use the word ‘inspiring’ in reference to disabled people, but Carly inspires me. She inspires me with her words. She inspires me with her fashion. She inspires me with her writing. She inspires me with her passion and her strength. Thankyou Carly! I look forward to many more conversations (and bottles of wine) with you! 💝 #disBABEled #disabledandcute . . . ON THIS DAY: 🌺1907🍉 Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was born. 🍉1994🌺 I was born! It makes me so happy to share my birthday with someone who has had such a significant influence on my life; a queer, disabled, badass Latinx artist, who lived and loved fiercely and unapologetically. To my beautiful friends and family: your presence, nurturing, love and support has truly shaped me and help me to grow into a person I am happy and proud to be today. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜💗 . . . This is the first image I ever posted on Instagram, over two and a half (2.5) years ago. A lot has happened since then. I want to talk about performative allyship. A few days ago, an account describing themselves as “a women’s empowerment organisation” reposted an image of me wearing my Future is Accessible t-shirt. There were several things which bothered me about this post. This account removed my caption and image description, and replaced it with one which actively misgendered me, despite my bio very clearly stating my gender identity and pronouns. The caption stated “Empowered women empower women - and that means providing access to all”, after having removed the image description I wrote, which is designed to provide access for disabled people. After having been called out multiple times through comments from myself and others, this account removed their post without comment, response or apology. This is an example of performative allyship. Marginalised or othered people are tokenised, objectified and used by people with privilege to feign an attempt at inclusion and tolerance, and to show the world how progressive it is to ‘collect’ intersectional diversity. Disabled people, people of colour, Indigenous people, trans and gender diverse people, sex workers, fat people, Muslim people and Jewish people are examples of peoples who are so frequently tokenised to colour people’s feeds and maintain a ‘woke’ aesthetic. Don’t, in the same moment as objectifying marginalised people, think it’s ok to use the words #access, #intersectional, #empowerment or #inclusive to further your reach. Support and listen to us, or get the fuck out of my communities. This is for ALL people who continue to engage in performative allyship culture. If you don’t want to truly be an ally or an activist, don’t. Don’t do it superficially and assume rights to a title earned by those who fight for their lives every day, who have no choice but to live politically, and who survive through activism. I will not continue to tolerate this. . . . [Image description: Ruby is sitting in their wheelchair in front of a dark brick wall, with pink curly hair, wearing a colourful sheer shawl.]

Love Yourself 💖💖 Probably my favourite series I’ve done so far...from @thetheythemcollective’s ‘X: An exhibition of art and poetry’. It’s time to see more disabled bodies represented in art. I see myself here. I see my disability here. I see my body here. Our exhibition is still up at @nagevadelaide until next week, go check it out if you haven’t already 💞 Photo by @pamo.boutros #disabledart . . .
