it was so nice to be rid of river’s sound.

river was a nice dude, and nathan definitely felt him missing in the group, but in the songs after his departure, spotlight seemed to push so hard to make sure that someone did raps in the same way, despite how much it didn’t always suit the song, and how much joonie and nathan both hated it. and now, finally, they were putting out songs where the two main vocalists didn’t have to moonlight at rappers, and it just felt like a burden was off his shoulders. in his opinion, the songs sounded better anyway. it was refreshing knowing that he’d been right all along, and spotlight was having that shoved in their faces. 

as soon as they stepped off-stage after the win presentation, nathan took a minute to breathe before slowly putting away his equipment, mind on what they’d get for food, and who all would be eating together (because he was certain jaebin was off fooling around with sunjoo-- he’d seen the younger idol make a beeline for her after they were done onstage. jae wouldn’t want to waste time getting pizza with noah and nathan and the others, surely). those thoughts left his mind, however, when he saw sunyi. it was like he’d forgotten how to speak momentarily. 

“oh... thank you,” he replied, giving her a smile. “that means a lot. it’s nice to finally get to focus on those instead of half-assing a rap verse. uh... you did a really good job as mc. are you the new permanent mc for this show?”

sunyi tried to not look too much like a deer somehow still caught in the headlights as she walked backstage once the music show finished wrapping, now quietly passing dressing room doors on her way to hand back her cue cards. in the years since rejectz had debuted she certainly couldn’t count as a newcomer to places like this anymore, but she rarely was in production studios representing her group on her own; this was one of few times that she had served as a special guest mc for a music show when higher needed to send another one of their artists as a substitute, and once she mentioned it to her sister, sunjoo didn’t pass on the chance to use sunyi as an excuse to see jaebin as well.

as she rounded the corner to hand her cards back in the right place, she saw nathan wrapping up the wires from his mic pack so he could hand his equipment in as well. “oh, uh, hi,” she stumbled over her greeting slightly, feeling a little bad about possibly interrupting whatever he could be doing but wanting to take to him nonetheless. “congrats on juno’s comeback, the vocals in the song are really amazing,” sunyi just started to not feel self conscious before she stumbled over herself half a moment later, “i mean, not that the rest of the song isn’t also great, i just really liked the harmonies you guys built.”

“depends on the project, really. what’s going on and all,” sangmin admitted. “but if neither is promoting, i stay at the scope dorms. there’s more people there, which to me is nice, because i like being around friends. and it’s going to be my permanent dorm once creed slows down anyway.”

“i would think that would be more stressful, but i guess all twenty of you aren’t in the same room,” nathan replied with a tiny smile. “does make sense to settle  yourself there, though. it would suck to get attached to the creed dorm only to never get to go back.”

nathan was a little sleep deprived, he wasn’t going to lie-- promotions were just slowing down, which meant he’d gone for a few weeks now on barely any sleep. but he wasn’t going to miss this for the world. he’d been eleven when mira was born, and that had been cool, but he was old enough to really know he wanted to savour this moment now. “i’ve got him,” nathan replied softly, taking the baby securely in his arms. “how is lucy?”

andrew adjusted the baby in his arms, slowly stepping out where his other kids were waiting. gabriel was finally calm and settled, and lucy needed the rest. nathan’s timing in the arrival was perfect. “you ready to meet your new brother?” he asked gently once her got to where the other four were waiting. “one at a time– gently! we just got him calmed down.” @rvjinhwa @hojungrv @rvnate​

“that’s a stretch, considering you’re a literal child prodigy and your father is one of the best musical minds of the past few decades, but i’ll take it,” she laughed. “well….maybe that’s just how he comes off. until recently, i was convinced he didn’t like me…”

“i think hojung is just like that. woori was convinced he hated her until recently, and they’re literally dating now. i think he just has resting bitch face. and resting bitch personality, if that’s a thing.”

“yeah, yeah. sorry. you’re good at your job, okay? i’m lucky to have you as my leader and not, like…..fucking dayoon or someone. just like…see what you can do about sneaking me more lines, okay?”

“dayoon as a leader of a group is something that comes from nightmares,” nathan groaned, shaking his head at the thought. “i’ll try. in the mean time, you and i need to talk about something a little more serious.”

“i guess, but i still wanted to ask,” sangmin insisted, blushing slightly. “i’ll take note of that! do you still have a room there, or are you strictly juno dorms these days?”

“i split my time between the two,” nathan said with a tiny smile. when i’m promoting, or really need to work on something with joonie and noah, i sleep in the dorms. but on my off time most of the time, i stay at home,” he explained. “what about you? creed dorms or scope?”

“we’d all better hope so,” andrew answered, rolling his eyes and passing nathan another clean dish out of the soapy water. “it’s like riding a bike. you never forget. i’m sure i’ll be fine. are you ready to go back to being a live-in babysitter?”

“i don’t live with you anymore-- can’t be me. you should be asking hojung that,” nathan pointed out with a laugh, putting away a plate and grabbing the next one to dry. “do you guys know the sex yet?”

“she is smart– that’s something all four of you have in common. i’m sure it’s genetic, the new baby will be just as smart,” lucy laughed. “i guess i’ve just heard horror stories of the old youngest being upset about a new baby and got worried…”

“you’re smarter than all of us combined, lucy. you’re the smartest person i’ve ever met. if it’s genetic, this is gonna be a baby genius,” he laughed. “i mean.... i don’t remember much about when hojung was born, but by all accounts, hojung hated ginny for the first year of her life.”

he sighed, grumbling. “it’s not your fault. i’m just annoyed,” he replied under his breath

“i know, dude. and it’s warranted. but i’m not the bad guy here, okay?”

“Having as many members as Juno has has to be pretty helpful with that, I’d think. Or is it?”

“to a certain extent,” nathan laughed. “i uh.... definitely ask noah and joonie for opinions more often than some other members...”

“it’s fairly exciting for her, i think,” lucy said with a smile. “this is her first younger sibling, and she’s old enough to realize what that entails for her. i was worried she’d be upset, but she’s more excited than anyone.”

“of course she’s excited-- she loves you,” nathan answered his now step-mother earnestly. “and she already knows she’s dad’s baby still. she’s old enough to realize that that won’t change. she’s pretty smart.”

“think you’re ready for another baby, old man?” nathan asked with a wry smile as he helped his dad wash dishes. “it’s been almost a decade since you’re last kid. maybe you’re too old for this...” @rvseungjin​

“thanks. i appreciate all the work you do, you know? our group is good. i just feel left behind sometimes.”

“i know. and i’m sorry. it’s just...growing pains, you know? i’m trying my best,” nathan assured him.”

“dude, you’re allowed over whenever you want,” nathan assured his cousin, nodding. “just shoot one of us a text. dad or hojung are probably your best bet, since they’re home the most, but they’ll let you in.”

“i was wondering if i could come over sometime next week?” sangmin asked, playing with his sleeves. “dad has something he wants to give you. like, as a gift. because of lucy. and it’s been forever since i’ve been over….” @rvnate​ @hojungrv​ @rvjinhwa​ @rvandrew​

“there shouldn’t be. there’s nothing in his contract that states he can’t sell his work to other artists, as long as he isn’t taking his time away from new age products, and as long as they get a 5% cut,” andrew said thoughtfully. “you’re not lacking, nathan. you’re just trying to live in a world that does all it can to make that hard for you. finding ways to make it easier is not weakness.”

“i didn’t know they took a cut of all his work,” nathan retorted. “in that case, of course they’ll let him do it. the more songs he writes, the more returns they get too. nuts.” he sighed, rubbing his face. “yeah, yeah. you’ve said that a lot. maybe one of these times i’ll actually believe you.”

“whatever. it’s still stupid. we have so many members– no one needs that much of the song. why am i even here?” jaebin retorted bitterly with a pout

“okay, okay. i get it. no need to draw it out more-- i got the message,” nathan sighed. “i don’t have nearly as much say as i’d like but.... i’ll figure out how to make sure you get more next comeback. i promise.”

“i can’t imagine how strange it must be– you’re almost as old as your dad was when you were born,” lucy pointed out with a tiny smile. “i did too until idol project started and everyone started listing all the idols i’d trained. it built my credibility, at least.”

“i don’t even wanna think about that-- it freaks me out whenever i do,” nathan laughed. he knew he was an accident, but still. he couldn’t fathom having a child at his age. “but i mean....having a sibling that young isn’t super weird, i guess. i know i’m older but... i was pretty old when mira was born.”
