Research & Development of ENIGMA Mogami Kaisei, Katsuragi Takumi

Research details Mogami Kaisei, former unit leader of the research into many-worlds interpretation at Touto Institute of Advanced Matter Physics, started his research after he discovered the unknown virus at the Skywall. That virus, the Bugster Virus, was analyzed. From the results, it was theorized that the virus came from a different world(a parallel world). A plan to develop “ENIGMA”, a device to access the parallel world, was thus drawn up. After that, Mogami resigned from Touto Institute of Advanced Matter Physics and joined Namba Heavy Industries. Together with Katsuragi Takumi, he started the development of the biological weapon named “Kaiser System”, which fused the extracted energy of Nebula Gas with the Bugster Virus. However, as there was a limit to the amount of Bugster Virus which could be harvested from the extant world, the need to access a parallel world where the virus was abundant kept increasing. Accordingly, the development of “ENIGMA” progressed at the same time. Updated blueprints, based on the ones Mogami had drawn up in his days at Touto Institute of Advanced Matter Physics and now incorporating Katsuragi’s opinions, were used in creating the first prototype. However, the first prototype was not able to be activated normally as problems arose in its activation system. The improved second prototype was able to access the parallel world successfully. Nevertheless, there still remained challenges in terms of stability, as it would shut down once in three tries during the process of accessing the parallel world [text gets cut off]

Soma presents his dish and asks Tsukasa to taste. Tsukasa agrees as he is still waiting for his sauce to finish cooking.

Soma says that judging has not been decided yet. He opens the window that Erina and Hisako are hiding behind, and asks  them to join in the tasting.

Erina, Hisako and Tsukasa taste Soma’s dish and react.

The secret ingredient is coffee. Soma had learned that wild game meat goes well with cacao at Shinomiya’s, though he does not have much expereince with cacao. He had used instant coffee instead.

After eating, Tsukasa seems to be thinking. He notices Hisako’s gaze and comes out of it.

Tsukasa completes his dish, which consist of two pieces of venison with different sauces on each.

Hisako, Soma and Erina starts to taste Tsukasa’s dish.

They are all impressed by the complex sauces.

It’s now time for the judging by Erina and Hisako...

Soma selects the leg meat of the venison. He then begins to go through his bag(full of snacks & sweets), and finally finds what he was looking for - a pack of sweet chestnuts.

Soma starts to prepare his dish. He uses charcoal fire to cook the venison. This isn’t a tenchnique of French cuisine though, which confuses Hisako and Erina.

His dish is completed - venison with chestnuts on top.

[Shokugeki no Soma]chapter 163 spoilers summary

Starts with flashback to when Soma first entered Tootsuki, and also to when he first meets the first seat.

In the present, Soma is fired up, and not listening, until Tsukasa reminds him that he has to join Central if he loses.

Tsukasa gives him a chance to back out, but Soma does not. Soma says that it is still uncertain whether he  will win or lose.

Meanwhile, Hisako and Erina are still hiding and looking in.

Tsukasa suggests using venison, as there are  a lot left over from the previous lesson. Soma suggests French cuisine.

The match starts. While Soma is still thinking, Tsukasa starts on his preparations.

Just the scent causes Hisako to react.

Erina is also affected. “That sense and technique has gone beyond man...Tsukasa Eishi has crossed into the realm of the culinary gods.“

Soma questions Tsukasa on Central.

Tsukasa reveals that Central’s objective thereafter was to tear down restaurants in Japan, specifically those which do not serve gourmet food. The current regulations and lessons are the preparation for that.

chapter 162: Watashi(Me/I)

After Tsukasa extends his invitation, Soma tells him to stop joking. When he looks at Tsukasa’s expression, Soma quickly reassures him that he is happy that Tsukasa acknowledges his ability. However, Soma does not want his Yukihira cooking to be under Central.

Tsukasa tells Soma that he only wants Soma’s support ability, in order to polish his own cooking further.

Soma: “..You say such a selfish thing with such nonchalance... The type of people known as chefs are each and everyone of them so self-centered that I’m stumped.”

Erina is in French cuisine class with other students. While cooking, she thinks back to the day of the first survivor’s hunt. The flashback is a continuation of the conversation between Alice and Erina.

As the flashback ends, Erina finishes up.

The teachers come in and talk to Erina. They are expecting her to be successor to Azami.

Erina and Hisako go to change. As they change, they talk. It appears that the 2nd day of Survivor’s hunt has been decided on. It will be in 3 days.

Erina tells Hisako that perhaps another RS/seminar could win, that Azami’s administration is not absolute. Hisako stares at Erina, then tells her that she feels Erina has somehow changed.

They walk out and down a corridor. Erina thinks about Soma’s and Alice’s words.

The two of them see Tsukasa and Soma talking, so they hid and listened in.

Soma has once again rejected Tsukasa’s offer. He says that perhaps his cooking might even turn out to be better.

Tsukasa then challenges Soma to a showdown, putting his first seat on the line. If Soma loses, he will become Tsukasa’s subordinate.

Soma: “..Bring it on...!”

Chapter 161

After the 1st day of the survival’s hunt,

Azami spearheads the dissolution(physical meaning of the word)of the 32 organizations which had lost their shokugeki.

In a dark room is Goudabayashi and the former members of the Chanko nabe RS. They are meeting in secret, going against Central’s rules. However, they get discovered by a Central black suit, and get punished.

The scene shifts to the classroom. Soma and his classmates are waiting for the teacher.

There used to be two types of cooking class, one where they followed instructions and one where they are just given the genres & themes. The latter type has now been abolished. Soma feels that even Shinomiya’s itchen had more freedom/tolerance. Cue Shinomiya in his kitchen feeling a sudden surge of irritation.

Just then, a black suit enters the classroom. Their teacher had objected to Central’s policies, and so, was dismissed.

The replacement came in, and it is the first seat, Tsukasa Eishi. Tsukasa intriduces himself.

The theme is 5 dishes of French cuisine.

When he requests for helpers, the students are too afraid, but of course, Soma steps up. Soma is able to keep up with the speed of Tsukasa’s preparations due to his training under Shinomiya.

Tsukasa invites Soma to join Central.

Back with Erina and Isshiki. They are in a car heading towards hall D.

Back to hall D. Alice and Azami have a confrontation. Erina and Isshiki arrives to this scene.

Flashback to young Alice. She wrote letters after letters to Erina, but no replies ever came. It was because Azami had disposed of the letters. End flashback.

Alice dislikes Azami because of this and so she declares that she won’t let him do as he likes with Tootsuki.

Azami retreats from the scene. He tells his secretary to summon Rentarou to his office

chapter 159: growth

Erina is in her room at PSD, thinking. Isshiki appears from the ceiling, scaring her speechless.

At Hall D. Uproar over Kurokiba’s dish. The green layer is actually crepe with spinach in it. Kusunoki can’t believe that’s all there. is to it, so Kurokiba reveals that the crepe also has seasoning spice in it. The seasoning spice has thyme, oregano, garlic, dried bacon. He was using bacon, just like Kusunoki.

What Kurokiba was aiming for was the un-evenness/non-uniformity of taste. The spice was scattered, so that both the parts without the spice and with the spice could be tasted.

Flashback to Stagiare period. Kurokiba was sent to a curry restaurant, the owner was a Indian man. He decided to learn how to make use of spices there.

Result of shokugeki is 3:0 in favour of Kurokiba.

Azami, who was observing the shokugeki, steps out clapping. “It was a good battle”

Everyone: “Nakiri Azami”

Soma: “Ah Nakamura-sempai is here too?” Takumi: “Whatever, but why are you calling him by his old name?”

Alice: “...Uncle Azami, it’s been a long time...”

Ooizumi: “There is a definite difference between the two dishes!”

Megumi: “Definite...difference?” “Even though it looks like they both can’t put out better dishes than that?”

Takumi: “Aah..it’s to the extent one judge feels both dishes are even”

Soma: “damn! I should have asked for a taste as well. I’ll do that later”

The crowd muttered among themselves.

Momo: “Perhaps in the steam convection oven used by Kusunoki-kun” “The judges have probably noticed too”

Megumi: “In the steam convection oven?”

Rentarou: “As expected of Momo-sempai..you have a discerning eye”

He opens the oven, and there is some liquid there. It is olive oil. Ren then explains how he used the olive oil to ensure that the fish essense don’t leak out. He arrogantly assumes that this makes his dish better than Ryou’s.

Ooizumi urges the other judges to have another taste. One judge chooses Kurokiba Ryou’s dish, shocking Mea and the other members of Central.

Rentarou too, is flustered. Ryou tells him to try his dish. Ren tries Ryou’s coulibiac and reacts.

The secret seems to be the green layer in the coulibiac

Ryou: “I’ll tell you Central. I’m different from the me back then!”
