Alignment Shims
What exactly are Alignment Shims?
Installation of alignment shims is relatively simple and would be deemed "easy" if it weren't for one major detail: you must have access to an alignment rack or machine to properly install alignment shims. The vast majority of do-it-yourself mechanics and automotive enthusiasts leave vehicle alignment to the professionals.
There are numerous alignment shim designs available, including aftermarket devices meant to make alignment services easier to conduct. Alignment shims are used to rectify camber and toe measurements that are not within factory tolerances.
How Do Alignment Shims Get Made?
Though you may make your own rear alignment shims at home, performing a perfect alignment requires pricey, specialised equipment. There are ways to align your vehicle without using an alignment rack, but these methods need specialist knowledge and a lot of spare time. Typically, alignment shims are mass-produced using machine shop techniques.
Uses Of Alignment Shims
These shims are used in the process of correcting the vertical position of a moving machine so that it is aligned with the stationary or reference machine. These shims are simply adjustable and require little effort to use.
Features
Perfectly Flat, entirely Burr-free. Each Shim is permanently labelled with the respective thickness for quick and easy identification. Makes alignment simpler.

All About Coupling And Alignment Shims
Shims are thin, tapered or wedged pieces of material that are used to fill small gaps or crevices between objects. Shims are commonly used to support, modify for a better fit, or give a level surface. Shims can also be used as spacers to fill gaps between worn-out parts.
They can provide support, alter fit, or level up uneven surfaces, among other things. Many industry specialists make shims out of whatever materials are available at the time. Higher-quality shim stock, on the other hand, is commercially available in a range of materials, including wood shim stock, plastic shim stock, and metal shim stock.
Shims are an essential component for a wide range of DIY repairs and fits. There are various types of shims, such as arbor shims, variable shims, slotted shims, shim rings, and shim stock. While they are all used to compensate for excess tolerances, they individually add value to certain applications. Among them, there are coupling shims and alignment shims.
Coupling Shims
Engineers have used flexible coupling shims for decades in applications that require maximum dependability and uptime while minimising wear on neighbouring equipment and eliminating the need for lubrication or maintenance of the coupling itself.
Prior to the advent of the coupling shims, flexible couplings almost always had either gear teeth that needed periodic lubrication or rubber and plastic materials that degraded over time and needed to be replaced.
Furthermore, as industrial processes became more sophisticated in the latter half of the twentieth century, the need to improve coupling balance became critical as a means of reducing shaft vibration to protect the connected equipment's bearings and seals – something the flexible coupling shims greatly aided in.
What exactly is a coupling?
A coupling is a mechanical component part that links two shafts to correctly transmit power from the drive side to the driven side while absorbing installation error (misalignment), etc.
Uses Of Coupling Shims
Coupling shims have been used in a wide range of applications over the years, with many machine designs taking advantage of their unique properties. These shims contribute to their performance and lifespan, which many engineers respect.
Coupling shims have been used to prevent leakage between two couplings.
Coupling shims have been utilised in industries such as sugar mills, steel mill journal boxes, chemical plants, paper mills, refineries, power plants, and HVAC facilities.

Key Importance Of Alignment Shims For Vehicles
The manufacturing industry is creating more machines and parts with the rapid rise in technology. Industries are meeting the extensive demands of customers and communities by producing equipment at a large scale. Especially, the manufacturing and usage of vehicles, mainly four-wheelers and trucks are rising extensively. Whether for personal usage or commercial purpose, different kinds of vehicles are available to maintain seamless transportation. Moreover, maintaining a balance of vehicles is imperative to ensure a smooth transfer and reach people on time. Alignment shims are useful metal accessories for cars and trucks to properly align wheels in a better position.
If you are the owner of a vehicle, operate a garage, or simply repair transportation machinery, then it is relevant for you to understand the importance of shims.
What are Alignment Shims?
If you need to know about shims meaning, then it is a thin metal strip that is extensively used to insert inside machinery and create a running balance. Concerning the alignment of wheels, alignment shims are a low-density piece of metal material that is strategically cut to make parts fit together. It is an essential accessory used in several types of machinery and equipment to remove the functioning gap and ensure seamless operations. Moreover, shims are heavy-duty pieces of metal plates used in several industries including vehicle repair.
Why Use Alignment Shims for Vehicles?
Many times you might feel a disbalance of the wheel while driving your vehicle. It could be on a plain flat road where you experience a slight drift of the car unexpectedly. The problem becomes worse when you drive on an uneven path of a semi-urban, rural, or desert area. The issue happens when there is a misalignment between the metallic part and the tire. It might result in wear and tear of the whole tire that could further lead to a road accident, loss of life, or property.
In such emergency circumstances, you can rely on a metallic shim kit for alignment of the wheel. A professional wheel repairing partner can make the best use of alignment shims and place them between the tire and the metallic wheel. It helps create a necessary balance and maintain the air pressure. Another benefit is eliminating any sort of wheel vibration and allowing the assembly works perfectly with the axel. Ultimately, it helps in safeguarding the vehicle’s condition and your life as well.
Conclusion
Alignment shims are a must to include accessories in the automotive industry to maintain the vehicle’s wheel balance to an optimum extent. It helps cars, bikes, and trucks run smoothly in distinctive road conditions. Small metallic plates help bridge the gap between two machinery objects and allow the performance to improve to a maximum extent. You can shop for shims for alignment online in a particular choice of size and thickness.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Which material is used in making alignment shims?

Thrust washer
What is a thrust washer?
Thrust washers are flat washers that are located amid a rotating surface and a stationary component. They support the axial load or side to side motion on a shaft and stop movement along that shaft. The thrust washer gives a surface on which a bearing is supported. They are made to be used in high-wear applications.
Where are thrust washers used?
They are used in high-wear applications such as axle assemblies, motors, transmissions, power take-offs, pumps and winches. Just about any application that needs a wear surface.
What materials are thrust washers manufactured from?
Thrust washer material is determined by the application. Choice of material is determined by numerous factors such as speed, load, and temperature. Aluminium shims
Aluminum shims are a wonder. At least that’s what I like to think when I look at them. They float in the air and bend with the wind. They provide a stability that some other materials can’t match, and they’re cheap to produce.
I was talking to an employee of one of my suppliers a few months ago, and she mentioned that this particular company has been producing aluminum shims for the last five years or so. She told me how she used to work at another company, which never produced them (I have no idea why). But now her company does and it costs about $1 per pound (1000 pounds are about $10) for shims that are around .015 inch thick, making it cheaper than any other material.
Imagine the possibilities! You can shave down your production time by 20%, saving you even more money on your budget every month. You don’t need to spend thousands on tooling or heavy machinery; you just have to buy shims from someone else, who happens to be producing aluminum products for you! This is magic!
I think it sounds incredible — but it’s not too far-fetched an idea if you consider how much aluminum costs these days. Aluminum came into existence in 1937 as a byproduct of steel production. It was used as an alloy in automobile bodies and airplanes due to its strength and lightness. Aluminum is a 90% metal by weight – meaning only 10% of the actual material is needed for its finished product — but what makes it so valuable? It is incredibly lightweight (about 50% lighter than steel) and extremely strong (it can absorb up to 4 times its own weight before deforming).
Its strength allows for very thin sheets of aluminum (1/8th inch thick) that are stronger than steel structural members (for example: ship hulls). The finest quality aluminum sheets could be sold for $200 per foot while steel sheets would sell for $500 – yet they give better strength because they cost less! Aluminum also has excellent weather resistance – meaning that under extreme weather conditions like hurricanes, hail storms or freezing temperatures, aluminum will remain intact because the strong air pressure inside the sheet will keep it together while other materials would deflate or burst apart under such conditions.
A single sheet of aluminum weighs about 30 pounds — therefore breaking apart would be highly undesirable when shipping goods inside cargo planes — yet transportation companies have still managed to cut their shipping costs
2. Different Types of Aluminum Shim
Aluminum shims are a popular item used in automobiles and other commercial vehicles. They are used to increase the life of aluminum panels. There are a variety of different types of aluminum shims that can be found at your local home improvement or auto parts store.
The main difference between the various types of aluminum shims is their thickness which is based on how thick the aluminum used in their creation.
Aluminum shims range from 2mm to 36mm with the thicker ones being slightly more costly. The thinner ones are slightly more expensive but also allow for greater air flow and a smoother ride for your vehicle.
3. Advantages of Aluminum Shims
Aluminum shims are cheap and easy to find. You can buy them in any office supply store or online at a very competitive price. As long as the manufacturer makes aluminum shims with good reputation, they will have no problems getting their product approved by the industry.
In fact, many manufacturers use aluminum shims to make their products more durable and less likely to crack when they are exposed to high temperatures or moisture. Popular brands of aluminum shims include Derwent, Roloc, Abracadabra and Axum.
4. Disadvantages of Aluminum Shims
Aluminum shims are a great tool in your automotive arsenal, as they can be used to change the height of your lift kits to prevent or decrease engine damage. As such, they’re a common tool to have around the garage and many of us use aluminum shims to change the height of our lifts. So why do we need aluminum shims?
We don’t. It’s not necessary for you to use aluminum shims in order for your vehicle to be safe on the road.
There are much better ways to raise or lower your vehicle with out using aluminum shims. We have readers who like sharing their stories about how much safer their vehicles are now that they know what other people are doing instead of blindly following “experts.”
That being said, it is likely that someone will read this article and think that you need aluminum shims to raise or lower your vehicle. Don’t let them get away with it! It isn’t necessary for you to use aluminum shims in order for your vehicle to be safe on the road.
A man who has been driving his car for over 20 years is quite confident that he doesn’t need any kind of aluminum shim or special tools because he never has an accident because his engine won’t slip while he is traveling down the road at any speed (reference). If you want proof, look up all the accidents involving people who feel their vehicles won't slip and then watch how fast they go when they hit a bump or skid into a puddle of water and end up sliding across the asphalt onto the hoods of their cars (reference). This is from one individual who has had his car rebuilt after every single accident — it still slides even when there are no other cars around (reference).
This guy doesn't need any kind of aluminum shim when his engine won't slip while he's driving down the road at any speed because he never has an accident because his engine wont slip while he's driving down the road at any speed (reference). If you want proof, look up all the accidents involving people who feel their vehicles won't slip an then watch how fast they go when they hit a bump or skid into a puddle of water and end up sliding across asphalt onto hoods of their cars (reference). This guy doesn't need any kind of aluminum shim when his engine wouldn't slip while he's driving down the road
5. Conclusion
Aluminum shims are an important element for fabricators to use when mounting the chassis of their car, motorcycle, or other vehicle.
The main purpose of using aluminum shims is to adjust the height of the shim over a long period of time. Small changes within a short amount of time may be too fast for your body’s reflexes to catch on, causing excessive wear and tear on your chassis. It is important that you always use aluminum shims with your aluminum body parts to prevent any unnecessary wear and tear on your body.
