I just found out one of my favorite AO3 authors of all time is a fucking neurosurgeon which was surprising initially just because I often forget AO3 writers are real people and not smut angels sent down from the heavens to make us feel alive, but in hindsight it makes perfect sense.

This was absolutely the most soul crushing devastating thing I have read in ages.

I really love the deconstruction of Rin's own mental health issues and his own self loathing. As readers we are immediately shown how Yukio directly thinks in ways that are unhealthy and they're pretty explicit about his suicidality, but this scene really shows to me just how deep and hurting Rin was too.

For Rin, growing up believing you were bad only for those fears to be confirmed over and over again, with no reprieve. The only way forward is to prove to yourself and others that deep down. you're good.

He's such a fucking good kid, even though his anger and impulses caused him to do violence, Shiro taught him to have good intentions. His arc has been about controlling those things, bc deep down he has always been good. He is not at fault of what he did or who he harmed as a baby, because he was just a baby. Even if a demon. It's the pure heart that exposes just how much love and emotion he has for others

I have so many things to say about how his own self hatred parallels with Yukio's and say so much about their core fears.

They both hate themselves, they see each other as lesser than the other.

Rin's fundamental conflict is that he knows he's bad because that's all he has ever been, so he pushes to convince himself that's not true (while also believing he'd be better off dead). In other words, he knows he is bad so he avoids accepting the past and pushes through it to make a better present.

Yukio's fundamental conflict is that deep down, he feels like he is bad, and it's only a matter of time until it erupts and takes over him. He feels like a ticking bomb, because he compares himseld to Rin and seeing the way Rin fights to become better makes him realize and think that he can't do the same. So he fixates on that thought, that intrinsically he is the bad one. In essense, he wants to control the things that he believes will make him snap.

Neither aspect is healthy and both are completely expexted behavioral responses to anxiety and complex trauma, but still so deeply ingrained in them.

I think mephisto showing Rin, who refused to think about the past bc it would confirm his worst thoughts, a past that did just that is so fucking powerful. Bc it showed that despite the fact it's all true, it also showed that everyone else around him loved him enough to believe otherwise.
