If I see one more “Travis had to hallucinate Lottie just to get it up with Nat” post I’m going to lose it. I’m officially crashing out. It’s just a fundamental misunderstanding of that scene. He is not viewing her in a sexual way at all. The hallucination isn’t about arousal, it’s a visual representation of Travis’ internal battle between faith and pragmatism. Natalie represents grounded truth. Lottie represents spirituality, belief, and hope. Nat is telling him his brother is dead. Lottie is telling him his brother is alive. He’s torn between his love for Nat and his belief in Lottie. Nat can provide him with pragmatic, concrete forms of comfort (physical intimacy, logic, grieving) but she can’t provide the spiritual reassurance he craves (which Lottie provides). Lottie is appearing as a motherly, holy figure to him in this scene, hence the pure white nightgown and the halo of light around her.

This dynamic is also at the heart of Natalie’s jealousy when she sees Travis drawn to Lottie. It’s not about romance, she knows Lottie is giving him a form of emotional, spiritual intimacy she she can’t compete with.

Reducing all of that layered symbolism to “Travis wanted to fuck Lottie” is so boring and completely misses the emotional and psychological depth of what’s happening.
