Resolution
Since pixel art games are mostly retro type games I chose to adopt a 480p screen resolution that will be upscaled. However this is extremely tentative and will most likely change in the actual development.

Journal

My character will have a journal where he writes a checklist and a daily review in. This is just what I do in real life and it helps me stay focused, so the ingame journal looks the same as the real life counterpart.

Stage 3 - the castle

Once again, like the other 2 stages, this also dwarfs the player, making him feel small compared to the challenges he has to face.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Meditation is a form of CBT that helps you focus. After meditation the character sees a clear path to progress out of an empty dungeon with all other things blocked out.

Representing a crash through gameplay

To meet the focus requirement to obtain the weapon to fight the boss, the player must consume the potion, representing a stimulant. In real life this drug causes one to crash after it wears off in a few hours. The crash brings about anxiety and exhaustion, with the crowd and music disappearing into ominous silence representing the anxiety.
The player has completed his first task and is feeling the crash, he dozes off and falls asleep, taking him into the 2nd stage of the nightmare.

Stage 2 concept art

A ruined magical city is the stage for the 2nd level. The scale of everything is huge compared to the player character making it daunting, fitting for the nightmare. The player feels small compared to the setting. The palette will be filled with deep blues and greys. The night will be starry and the darkness illuminated by flame torches and magical lights.

Villain 3: Manifestation

Yes he's a brain in an orb. This is because ultimately mental illness comes from the brain. His name comes from his power. Since it has no body of its own it uses magical energy projections to take action.

Composing my own music.
Sound and music is one of the most important things to set the tone of the stage in gaming. Since I can play the guitar myself I set out to compose my own music.
The first "stage" is just calming, relaxing music. There is not much stress on the player at this moment in time.
The actual first arena is loud aggressive rock music that reflects the tension the player feels and the charged up atmosphere of the crowd.
The 2nd stage's music is eerie and creepy filled with minor notes that create an unnerving atmosphere, reminiscent of a nightmare.
The 3rd stage is classical music with growing intensity as the player gets closer to the boss. This is due to the type of lofty attitudes that people in academia tend to possess.
