SoMa week day 1: Saints

Summary: "Choose another witch to make your death scythe, or this will be the rest of your life."

Maka's mother did the unthinkable, and let the witch go. Now Maka has to suffer the consequences.

Had been seeing this talked about in JP SEtwt lately about Maka's supposed fears. Maka can have two prominent fears, both relating to loss:

1.) Fearing that she will not be strong enough to protect what matters (clown arc)

2.) That she isn't perfect or mattering enough for people that she's worth ditching for/be replaced (salvage)

All these fears made sense when you consider her upbringing.

Though, considering it's very common for children of divorce to blame themselves for their parents' separation, I wonder if Maka felt that way too, that even her blaming Spirit is also a form of her coping that it might actually be her fault (that she was an accident and her mother wasn't ready to take that responsibility)

((I've wrapped on the Salvage rewrite draft. So here's a sneak peek of the new AU fic I'm working on))

"Dad?" A sharp intake of breath told Black Star he was awake. "I really messed up this time." In the silence he felt the weight of it hit him. He shouldn't have gone outside. That weapon had treated him like a monster. Even if compared to his aunts and uncles he was mostly human, that clearly didn't matter to the DWMA weapons who might as well be humans. "I thought if I brought back a kishen egg Aunt Venus would finally see I'm ready for missions, but I couldn't do it. The one I was chasing kept changing it's smell and everything. It hijacked at least two people before I lost its trail." He didn't have the crazy gifts other assassins did, just intuition and a few mildly heightened senses. "I... I know it's bad, because it got people bringing up mom." The chains groaned, a raspy rush of air came out, but no words. He would hate how they talked about her now. Aunt Venus promised years ago to find a cure, and all they'd done was keep him chained down here while they rewrote history in his own home. "You'd be proud of me, I saved some DWMA kid from taking on more than they could handle." He rested against the bars, listening to his father's breathing even out. "I'm kind of a hero." It'd be nice if at least someone thought of him that way.

When y'all say Ranma you're talking Ranma 1/2? It was published from 1987-1996, I think when you look at it through that lens you realize how far we've come from the generalized thinking of that era through now. Considering that Rumiko Takahashi wrote Inuyasha after that series you can see the characters and their archetypes start to grow and continue their growth.

From today's lens looking at Ranma and their behavior, it's a different generation of art all together. I think in some ways it's cool to see how much we've evolved and grown, how now we expect that character deep-dive into the why's of the behaviors instead of just going with it for the punch lines.

Like, most Ranma Characters have a Thing that makes me go :/, but if you remove that thing, or ya know, worked through it, I'd be fine. For Nabiki, it’s the pictures. Ryoga, the entire "P-Chan" thing. Ranma's "honor" which is really "ego". Any of these things would be neat if they were character flaws that got explored & resolved, but since they are used as jokes, they just feel. Weird? (Then there's Genma, who kept SELLING HIS KID TO PAY HIS OWN DEBTS, who I would like to punt. With a brick.)

Honestly yeah.

I like the series, but it's not the most plot or character-development driven series.

There's some development over time, but most of it is just 'the characters get into shenanigans' without actually learning lessons.

I don't think this is 'bad' per-say. It knows what it is and isn't trying to market itself as such.

But it does have a fascinating /potential/ to have more character development plotlines.
