Red Mage is my favorite FF job.
A review of Red Mages from each mainline Final Fantasy game:
Summary: Red Mage is often underpowered, in some games they're only given access to half the spells of other mages, and with highly reduced potency at that, but when given a good spell selection and decent enough melee they can shine in some games.
Final Fantasy 1: The original red mage, and most likely the best. They have physical damage on par with a Thief, and after their upgrade they get magic up to level up to level 7(!!), out of 8 levels, though their selection is limited (especially at level 7 itself), they're still quite useful. In the original game there's a bug that makes the Wisdom stat useless, so a Red Mage's magic is just as potent as a black or white mage's. They have a decent equipment selection, they can use the Sun Sword which is only 1 atk worse than the Ninja's best weapon, and decent medium armor, again on par with Ninja.
Final Fantasy 3: Red Mages start out decently, with magics up to level 4 (5 in the remake and pixel remaster), but the potency and casts per level leave something to be desired. Their stats fall off pretty quickly and there's basically no reason to use one after you get to around the Fire Crystal. Unlike in FF1 there's no real evolution to the Red Mage, unlike White or Black Mages (unless you count Sage, which I don't). Compared to the first game it's just disappointing.
Final Fantasy 5: Like with FF3, Red Mage gets access to magic up to half the max, 3/6 in this case, Also as with FF3 Red Mage has a significantly lower magic stat than either other mage. It does have a.. not awful attack score, and its versatility is mildly decent up until you get fourth level magic, at which point the job falls off. However, it does have one saving grace... it can learn the Dualcast ability... which is powerful, but it's much more useful on a class that's not Red Mage; also it takes a lot of grinding to get, which isn't great.
Final Fantasy 11: Finally another game where Red Mage is actually pretty cool, I mained RDM/NIN in FFXI back when I played it and it's a wonderful class to play. Unlike in previous (and future) games RDM actually has a specialty in FFXI, buffing and debuffing, it also gains access to the spell Refresh (which used to be unique to RDM) and Refresh 2 (which IS Unique to RDM) which are practically good enough to make bringing RDM along for just that! They are fun to play solo and in groups, and a great class all around.
Final Fantasy 12: Red Battlemage is a pretty solid class in this game, with a decent selection of weapons and the ability to wear mystic armor. Their spell selection is also pretty good, and they have a pretty decent amount of magic lores (12 vs. 15 or 16 for White or Black Mages), they're good all-rounders similar to how they are in the first game. I find that they pair best with a physical class to boost their physical prowess as their magical might is decent enough already.
Final Fantasy 14: On the plus side Red Mage is a fairly decent DPS class, it's not really outshone by other DPS classes as FF14 is fairly balanced in that regard. The downside is that Red Mage doesn't really feel much like a Red Mage. They primarily cast offensive spells, then occasionally dash in for a quick 3-hit combo. They can Cure and Raise, but as a DPS class they shouldn't be doing these unless it's an emergency, let the healers do their job. Technically some of their offensive spells are White Magic based (eg. Veraero and Verholy), but that doesn't really change how the class feels.

A couple job interview hacks from someone who has to give a job interview every single goddamn day: (disclaimer: this goes for my process and my company’s process, other companies and industries might be different)
1. There are a few things I check and a few questions I ask literally just to figure out if you can play the game and get along with others in a professional setting. Part of the job I interview for is talking to people, and we work in teams. So if you can’t “play the game” a tiny bit, it’s not going to work. Playing the game includes:
- Why do you want to work here? (just prove that you googled the company, tell me like 1 thing about us, I just want to know that you did SOME kind of preparation for this interview)
- Are you wearing professional clothing? I don’t need a suit just don’t show up in a ratty t-shirt and sweatpants.
- Are you able to speak respectfully and without dropping f-bombs all the time? Not because I’m offended but because I don’t want to be reported to HR if you wind up on my team.
- Can you follow simple directions in an interview?
2. Stop telling me protected information. I don’t want to know about what drugs or medications you’re on, I don’t want to know about you being sick, I don’t want to know if you’re planning to have children soon, I don’t want to know anything about your personal life other than “can you do the job?”
3. When we ask, “What questions do you have for me?” here are my favorites I’ve heard: - What does the day-to-day look like for a member of your team?
- If one of your team members was not performing up to his usual standard, what steps would you take to correct that?
- What can I start doing now to accelerate my learning process in this job?
- What are some reservations you have about me as a candidate? (be ready for this emotionally….it will REALLY help you in the future, and I’ve had people save themselves from a No after this, but can be hard to hear)
- In your opinion, what skills and qualities does the ideal candidate for this job possess?
- What advice would you give to a new hire in this position/someone who wanted to break into this industry, as someone who has worked here for a while?
Those are just my tips off-the-cuff. I work in sales in marketing/SAAS, so these can be very different depending on the industry, but I wish the people I interview could read this before they show up.

The symbology of the Convocation of Fourteen is just... one of my favorite details in ffxiv. And yeah, I know they have zodiac signs because Final Fantasy Tactics had zodiac signs and FF12 had zodiac signs, but 14's spin on them is inspired, and I don't think that gets enough appreciation.
Each of the Ascians is characterized to at least superficially match their sign. Emet-Selch seems like a Gemini, seemingly on both sides of every issue. Fandaniel seems like a Leo who wants to be the center of attention. Lahabrea, The Creator, seems like an artsy Pisces... just...y'know, a horrible one.
And it's not as if "terrible, messed-up version of Zodiac symbol" is new here. Tactics definitely had that already. The thing ffxiv adds to the trope is the presence of the Sun.
Azem's symbol being the sun and not a constellation tells us exactly what their role in the Convocation was supposed to be. The sun's path through the constellations is what gives all those signs their meanings. You can't be a Gemini unless the sun is in Gemini. The sun's passage through the zodiac is supposed to illuminate the best way forward. This is why Emet-Selch calls them both "Shepherd to the stars in the dark," and "Counsellor to the star's people." They're meant to inspire people to become their best selves. This is inadvertently what WoL does in numerous places and times across the game, (and one of the ancients in Elpis even comments on it) because apparently repeatedly dying at the hands of their coworkers and friends for eons did not get them out of having to do their job.
When the sun protested their unspeakbly terrible plan, they went all in on their hubris by casting it down forever. They never replaced Azem. They don't even want to remember they ever had a sun. They don't have the light that illuminates their best selves, their better future. So they can't find it anymore. They don't know how to be themselves anymore, in Azem's absence. In Elidibus' case, literally. He is so desperate for the guiding star he can't even remember having, that he constantly, instinctively, seeks out Azem in different forms. Wearing Ardbert's corpse, and wandering up to WoL for awkward chats, and looking back to the heroes of the past who were definitely Azem shards.
The sun, torn from the heavens, leads to the maker's ruin.

Flat and emotionless. Are we seeing the same Hrothgal? Wuk Lamat is bringing so much muscle, she isn't a gun show so much as a fully armed naval vessel primed and ready for open sea sorties. The work that went into making her eyes and face as emotive as Jack Black's is a work of art. AND THAT WAS JUST THE LAST TINY BIT OF 6.55 WHERE WE MEET HER. You're telling me there is prime Wuk Lamat content stretching an ENTIRE cutscene laden expansion? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP!

I've seen transphobes all over the place on other social media huffing copium about how they don't hate Wuk Lamat's English VA (and the entire character by extension) because she's trans but because her delivery is "flat and emotionless" and like objectively, no it's fucking not lmao
