Chuuatsu in the DOA arc is Chuuya being all “I don’t give a flying fuck who’s after us! This helicopter is going nowhere unless Atsushi is on it!”

The boss’s orders and knowing how disappointed him his boyfriend would be if he left them behind are the only reasons Chuuya hasn’t.

Oh he understands what their plan was and admittedly it’s a good one (not that he’s telling them that.) But Atsushi being separated in the all chaos and left down there pisses him off to no end.

It also worries him because if what the Agency says is true then Atsushi has no idea what just transpired. He’s being hunted down like a dog and he doesn’t even know it.

It does calm Chuuya to learn Kyouka went back and that Kunikida gave her a page from his notebook for aid.

But the longer Atsushi stays absent the more anxious he gets. Until Chuuya has enough and reasons leaving some members behind would not be making good on his word.

He puts the helicopter on auto pilot and sends it on its way. And without warning dives off the edge using his ability to cushion his fall and aid him in racing down underground.

Had the circumstances been less dire Chuuya would’ve seriously questioned what was with him and Agency members in tunnels.

And oh the sight oh his beloved curled up in a tight little vent terrified made his blood boil and his heart break.

Beside him was Kyouka who relaxed her stance at the sight of him and hopped down. While Atsushi gratefully took Chuuya’s extended hand and let him help him down.

“I…I don’t know what happened. I was fighting some clown? And then some people came and they just starting calling me a monster and shooting at me. And then Kyouka showed up and we hid in a vent.”

Atsushi looked so confused and it reminded Chuuya of a lost cat in the rain. He squeezed his hand gently before pulling him close and delighting in the way Atsushi relaxed in his arms.

Chuuya shook his head teasingly “man I leave you for 5 minutes.”

And oh did he mentally cheer at being able to make Atsushi giggle. He was so precious how dare anything bad ever happen to him.

They get back to the helicopter with Chuuya flying them both over to it. And if he sat at in pilots seat with Atsushi on his lap then it was no one’s business but there’s.

For me, this scene actually tells the viewer more about what kind of story we’re in for than anything else has, so far.

In the horror genre, it’s a common trope to have the monster (or human killer) kill cats, dogs, or other small animals. It’s meant to be a precursor for the death (or threat of death) of a human character. Therefore, whenever a small animal—like our favorite stray cat, Mince-aniki—makes repeat appearances, the first impulse as a horror enjoyer is to wonder when/if the monster is gonna kill that cat.

(I personally hate this trope, as it’s never actually scary or thought-provoking, but is rather used for shock value, and to upset the viewer. It doesn’t create tension like well-written horror does, it only serves to disturb the viewer on a cheap, shallow level that rarely makes the plot any better or more compelling).

However, “Hikaru” approaches the stray with a completely different mindset.

He wants the cat to like him, he feeds it, he tries to perfect "interacting with cat" behavior, along with his other attempts to blend in as a human. And Hikaru's memories have supplied him with how the villagers see Mince-aniki: they love him, they feed him scraps, and the cat is affectionate to the villagers who give him food.

In other words: "Hikaru" wants the human experience of playing with and earning the trust of a stray kitty cat.

It's endearing, of course, but it's the polar opposite of what most horror fans would come to expect from an eldritch monster with unknown origins and motives. Most horror stories would have the monster sizing up the animal, or seeing it as prey, or food, or even an inconvenience.

Does this mean the humans of the village are safe? Not really. But horror is done best when it's 3-dimensional, when there are layers to the reasons why the entity does what it does. And he has no need to kill the village cat. Why would he? The fact that "Hikaru" would rather learn how to pet it—would rather earn it's affection, it's love—is much, much more telling.

real hikaru was always in love with yoshiki but never had the courage to even realize because he was too far in the depths of internalized homophobia.

yoshiki also has a lot of internalized homophobia but not in the same way, his is more like: i know i'm gay but i won't tell anyone about it because i don't wanna be ostracised, more excluded than he already is. not necessarily by those who he loves but by anyone – he already feels strange, off putting and fucking gross. being gay just makes the equation more complex. "if i already don't fit in this will make it worse than it already is".

he knows and it's fucking painful, but he just won't say anything about it because it's safer to keep quiet.
