If you think that Food Fantasy is a common casual restaurant simulation game app like Cafeland or Food street, then you’re mistaken. Don’t get me wrong, I love those apps. It’s just that when I first saw the game advertisement, I had that same impression.

Food Fantasy is a surprisingly complex mobile game. It is a combination of team-based tactical RPG / visual novel / restaurant management. Here’s the Food Fantasy preregistration video so you can get a gist of what the app is all about:

Food Fantasy is developed and published by Elex Games. The same company who published ‘Clash of Kings’, Heroes War – Summoners & Monsters & Gods and Love Nikki-Dress UP Queen. It’s available in Google Play and Apple app stores since July 20, 2018.

STORY

I’ll make this super short. The plot started when the historical “Era War” between souls and humans causes the God of Beginnings to fell into depression giving rise to the negative energy. Despite forcing himself to eternal slumber in order to avoid the potential danger of the negative energy, Fallen Angels are born. The Magic Academy discovered the Food Souls by developing a powerful Magic crystal. Hurrah! Food Souls will save the day! (ര̀ᴗര́)و ̑̑ They are the hope of the humanity against the Fallen Angels.

WORLD

Tierra is the world in Food Fantasy game. At the beginning of the game, you have an option to choose the kingdom/place where the recipes you will develop comes from. All players will start on Gloriville then you can unlock other maps as you level up.

FOOD SOULS

Basically, this game revolves around the “Food Souls” and you as their “Master Attendant” to save the humanity against Fallen Angels, while leveling up a restaurant. Food Souls are food personified, meaning, the food that you eat or drink evolves into in-game cute anime characters with unique personalities, traits, skills and appearances. Plus! these Food Souls have Japanese voice-overs done by famous Japanese voice-actors like Miyuki Sawashiro (Kurapika in Hunter X Hunter & Sinon in Sword Art Online). Example: Tiramisu (an Italian coffee-flavored dessert) when it becomes a Food Soul, it will look like this:

You can summon them, collect and combine with other Food Souls. You can summon the character by using either the Soul ember or the Magic crystal. There are four categories of Food Souls depending on the rarity: (lowest to highest) M-Mundane (ordinary or common), R-Rare, SR-Super Rare, UR-Ultra Rare.

GAME PLAY

Food Fantasy needs multi-tasking skills to do the ff:

Level up by completing each stage in the map.

Manage the restaurant/food delivery using the food souls.

Develop and improve recipes.

Collect and upgrade food souls and discover the best team combinations.

Collect resources.

Arena / Team Up.

Train Fallen Angels.

Missions and Story play.

Exploration.

GAME PLAY>TEAM BATTLES

Majority of this game focuses on team battle. Team combination plays a crucial part of your success. A team will max out at 5 Food souls, with the exception of Double scoop since they are twins. Each Food souls has special abilities and skills. They are also categorized based on their roles: Defense, Strength, Magic and Support. If you are a RPG gamer, you’ll now how it works, right? Defense as tankers (front liners in the battle field), Strength and Magic as attackers and Support as healers.

My team “magical” combination at the moment consists of a defense (Escargot)-3 magic types (Peking duck, Dorayaki and Black tea)-support (Milk).

When creating a team, you also have to consider that most of the Food souls have a linked skill with the others. Example, if you have Milk and Black tea in your squad, you’re going to have 2 linked skills from Black tea and Milk: Super Flower Blossoms and Super Milk shower. The linked skill when activated glows. See the photo above.

As you level up, you also need to upgrade your Food soul’s star by acquiring their shards through summoning, tip store, medal store and benefits. Likewise, feeding them with dishes can increase their fondness level. At a later stage, you can equip trained Fallen Angels to your Food souls for bonus stat boost.

Aside from the Team combination, you can also use the Main character skills during combat. See the 2 skills in the photo below. These are the Cooking talents that you can learn and develop through the Cooking points you gained while managing the restaurant or developing/improving your dishes or missions.

There are three types of talents:

Damage – ranges from additional damage to poisoning skills (passive/active).

Support – ranges from invincibility to healing skills (passive/active).

Control – ranges from debuff to additional defense skills (passive/active).

BONUS! SECRET FOREST: Old Forest Entry Map 4-5 tip

If you reach the Old Forest Entry map 4-5, then read this. In this stage, you’ll encounter the savage Ring tooth and Blood shot that can wash out your team in a blink of an eye, even if you have a healer. You’d wish that you have an UR (Ultra rare) Food soul that is strong enough to kill this critter, too bad, you’re still a lowbie.

To finish this stage, it will depend on your available Food souls and Cooking talents. As for me, I was lucky enough that I got Sakuramochi at an early stage. She’s easy to acquire being a rare Food soul compared to SR and UR. Her special skill that’s important for this stage is Sakura Oath. It works by forging a sakura wall around the team member with the highest Def. Her Sakura Dance skill which reduce all enemies’ Def by 7 for 3 seconds also adds to the strategy. Note: If you just got her during this stage, upgrade her level and skills using the blue potion and leaf.

Here’s my setup:

Team Combination: Escargot (defense) -Black tea (attacker) – Dorayaki (debuff) – Sakuramochi (shield and debuff) – Milk (support)

Cooking talent: Saucepan (Stun for the enemy healer) and Seasoning (heal)

RESTAURANT

At the start of the game, during the tutorial, you’ll be asked from which region you would like to develop recipes first: Light Kingdom, Sakurajima or Gloriville. From there, you will acquire the ingredients as you complete the stages. After you develop the recipe, you will need to improve it by farming the ingredients (sweeping the stage) and cooking.

To manage the restaurant, all you need to do are:

Hire staffs: Head chef and waiter. I suggest using Food souls under the M (Mundane) category because they have high freshness meter. Every staff in your restaurant uses the freshness meter to do the task. Once depleted, either you feed them with potions or place them in the Ice arena to recover. Ice arena is unlocked when you reach level 16.

Develop and improve the recipes.

Upgrade your restaurant once you acquire enough fame and materials. Decorate it to your satisfaction.

Add some friends to help you hunt the ghosts in your restaurant.

VERDICT

Among the hundred game apps in Google play or Apple store, Food Fantasy is one of those few RPG having an original concept or unique game play. Being a free-to-play game is an added bonus. Plus, you don’t have to be a “whale” in order to be strong (as of today). If you love “kawaii” anime characters, team strategy and unique game play, then try this game.
