I was recently informed by a science professor I know that journals do not publish papers that don't yield interesting results, and while I understand that journals would rather publish your paper on how you cured cancer than all the things you tried that didn't, I am ENRAGED by this idea.
If you don't publish the experiments that didn't yield interesting results, people are going to waste time repeating them because when they look in the database and see nothing published on them, they're going to assume the experiment hasn't been done???
And then my professor told me that scientists just "assume that if the experiment would be relatively easy to set up, but there's nothing published on it, that means someone has already done it with no significant results." WHAT? That means we could be assuming that important experiments have been done just because they seem to be too easy???
Not to mention that this also encourages people to fudge results towards significance for career advancement because no one wants to spend YEARS on a project they don't get any credit for.
This convention of the culture is DELAYING scientific progress, I guarantee it. Please let me be financially successful enough that I can start my own journal for publishing experiments with no significant results. I AM ANGRY AT THIS INEFFICIENCY.

Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide
Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:
"I just want an identical experience to DL"
Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)
"I want a good audio-based app"
Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)
"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"
Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)
Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)
*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
"I have a pretty neat library card"
Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
Transparent Language: (Languages: THE MOST! Also the one that has the widest variety of African languages! Perhaps the most diverse in ESL and learning a foreign language not in English)
"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"
AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)
"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"
AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone
"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"
lingory
"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"
ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)
"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"
Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)

Finals studying starts tonight. Napped after my classes, did requirements, went on meetings with org and MSC, and now going to take a break to wash up and have dinner before I full-on study.

i just found out about one of the most powerful adhd tools i've ever seen online. i think i'll actually use this one in real life. holy shit
features:
Magic ToDo, which helps you break down tasks into smaller tasks
Tumblr media
Formalizer, which helps you adjust your tone depending on your situation - it can make you sound more or less formal, or more or less decisive/clear
Tumblr media
Judge, which assesses your tone to help you understand how you're coming across, or you could put in someone else's text to see what it thinks they meant
Tumblr media
Estimator, which can help you guess how long a certain task is going to take you
Tumblr media
and last but not least, the Compiler, which takes an amorphous braindump and magically rearranges it into a list of tasks, which can then be sent to the Magic ToDo list and broken down into more managable pieces!

Drop your best ADHD hot tips!
My #1 hot tip is to get treatment! Get meds and therapy!!! It helps so much!
But if you're not in a position to do that, or you are doing that and want more hot tips, here are some things that have helped me.
Do it to music. Task you don't like? Chore that feels overwhelming? Turn on some jams that make you feel like you need to dance and suddenly it's easier.
Time it. I've noticed that i tend to think stuff is going to take forever when really i just don't know where to start. Set a 5 or 10 minute timer and see what you can get done in that time. If the momentum carries you further than the time you set, great! If not, you can stop, and look - you made progress!
Giant white board. I don't know where I got this white board, but it's huge, and when i have a lot to do i take an inky black marker and make big check boxes next to everything i need to do, even if it's so simple. It's so satisfying to check those off.
Colorful, visual incentives. Right now i have a big jar of peanut butter m&ms by my sink. Every time i wash a dish, i can take one--and every time i Do The Dishes, i can have a handful. When i see the m&ms, I'm motivated to do a dish! I also used to write my school tasks on colorful sticky notes, then when the task was done I'd crumple the note and put it in a transparent vase. When the vase was full, I'd treat myself to something i liked!

Very serious pro tip if you struggle with cleaning due to adhd: put a fucking basket under it
If there is clutter piling up in a specific area, go through it and throw out legitimate trash and then keep the rest in the basket. It makes the space visibly neater and it also has a clear number of simple steps for the cleaning (the steps being place in basket)
I know it kinda sounds goofy, but it has been really helpful for me because those objects are going there anyways but now they are organized

One way I have found for myself that helps me keep up a good habit and not give it up after 4 days is, the day I don't feel like doing it I just do a lesser version of it.
Like if you wanna do dishes everyday and on day 4 you want to skip just wash one plate or only two spoons.
Or if you wanna exercise everyday but don't feel like doing it on day 3 just do 2 mins instead of 15 min or 5 mins instead of 30 mins.
That was you can tell yourself that you did it, it will make you feel proud and give you the motivation to carry it on the next day.
Keeping promises to yourself and fulfilling them helps builds up the habit to slowly keep your word more and more.

even more things that help me survive being alive part 3! (pt. 1/2)
eat directly out of the cooking pot or after putting food directly into tupperware after cooking so you don’t have to wash more dishes. and if you have leftovers you can just put the tupperware in the fridge
putting several plastic bags at the bottom of your trash can/waste bin so you can just take out a new one when the trash gets full. this helps me a lot in my bedroom and bathroom where the plastic bag hoard™ is too far away
keeping one of those transparent cold drink takeaway cups from a cafe and using that to drink my homemade coffee out of, just to make it feel like I’ve been somewhere
having a daily calendar that allows me to visually block out time for different tasks as my time-estimation is awful, and I think showering will take two hours
keeping a magnetic whiteboard on my fridge door that I write new grocery food items on so I know what I have to eat. no more rotting food bc you forgot it existed
a stock of passable quality readymade frozen meals, or frozen dumplings etc for when you want to eat but there are too many steps for even basic cooking
a personal one that I just kinda like - having a daily diary but not for complete sentences or fancy writing just very drily outlining what I did during the day. this creates smash hits such as “went to the store today. cried. watched encanto. cried again”
having a list of everything I could feasibly do on a day/hour off. includes all my hobbies, exercises or outdoor activities, language learning, friends (yes a list of your friends to remind u they exist), stuff I haven’t had time for, to-read/to-watch lists. otherwise I forget what’s out there!
