OK so I'm getting MAD Roman vibes from this song. Also just listen to it because it's lowkey like sooo goood. Had a time in my life where this was one of the only songs I listened too.

Instead of "this is homophobia," Virgil says "this is why I left the dark sides" at any minor inconvenience.
Patton catches him doing this one day and INSTANTLY GETS CONCERNED and tries to make sure that thing NEVER HAPPENS again.
And then it happens again and Patton starts crying and looks at Virgil like "please don't leave us too."
WOW THIS IS WAY MORE ANGSTY THEN I INTENDED

Chasing the Captain
Here’s a piece set in the mer au au (or reverse mer au) made by the talented @voidsides. Roman is a merman prince who has fallen desperately in love with pirate captain Virgil, who he follows around constantly trying to woo his grumpy human crush.
Read more of my work at @hiddendreamerwriting!
————————————————————————————————–
Captain Virgil stood aboard his ship, gazing out at the waves as the vessel continued to cross the sea. Such a vast, unforgiving landscape, the ocean- Virgil could stare into its depths for ages, knowing that a single storm could bring him plummeting into its unforgiving murky secrets. It gave him a strange sort of chill, bringing his life up to the edge and spitting in destiny’s face instead, riding along the waves like a tamed wild steed. Sometimes it felt as though he could speak to the sea itself, whispering for him to jump in and the horrible consequences that would befall him below…
And sometimes, the sea did more than whisper.
“Cap’n, it’s back.” A crew member jutted his thumb towards the hull of the ship. Virgil groaned, already hearing that melodious voice as he approached.
“Oh Captain my captain, your ship may be steady in her course but I am more so!”
Virgil huffed, rolling his eyes as he stepped up to peer over the rail. There, following the ship diligently was that same dreaded mer folk. Ruby red scales sparkling in the setting sun, the creature looked almost out of breath but was attempting to hide this with a dazzling smile.
“I thought we lost you in the storm.” Virgil drawled, sounding almost disappointed. It had been a blessed few days of silence.
“Captain, a pleasure it is to see you as well!” The mer lit up at the sight of Virgil, completely ignoring the captain’s statement. “Don’t you look ravishing this fine evening, care for a dip?”
Virgil flipped him off.

Yknow, the more that I consider it and rewatch the scene (and I have rewatched it so, so many times), Janus’ “evil twin” comment actually kind of was on the same level as Roman laughing at and insulting his name. Janus has kept his name secret for so long in canon, and it’s clear that his revealing it took a lot of courage - he was in a really, really vulnerable position, and Roman belittled him. So Janus hit him where it hurt, too. Now, neither of them were right in doing so, and neither of them deserved to be hurt, but it was just some especially heated, biting back-and-forth.
The true sting in that scene, then (at least in my opinion), is the fact that Thomas and Patton didn’t say anything. They both looked reproachfully at Roman when he laughed, but when Janus compares him to his twin, they avoid eye contact with Roman completely. Thomas at least knows how much that kind of comparison terrifies and hurts Roman - in a rare moment of explicit vulnerability and honesty, Roman himself admitted that Remus is everything he never wants to be - but instead of calling both Roman and Janus out on the insults, instead of stopping them and making them apologize as they probably should have, he just looks away.
And in Roman’s mind, that seemingly confirms that Janus isn’t just insulting him for insult’s sake; he’s pointing out a genuine flaw. He’s truly saying that Roman is as ‘bad’ as Remus. And Thomas and Patton letting him say that, unchecked, doesn’t just communicate that Roman went too far in laughing and deserved the bite back, it tells Roman that they agree.
