went to the mall earlier today and found out the ugly stepsister is in (polish) cinemas since yesterday. was pleasantly surprised to see the posters all over the mall. will be seeing it soon

A small detail that I really like in The ugly stepsister is what Elvira answers to Alma when they are having a picnic in the woods. While Elvira confesses her plan to swallow the tapeworm’s egg to fix her weight, Alma is rightfully horrified by what her sister is ready to do to get as beautiful as it is expected of a maid. Alma tells her that she is “sick in the head” (sorry all my quotes will be paraphrased, I watched the movie in its original version with French subtitles). Elvira takes that badly and answers something of the like “you are so childish”.

It is just one line, but it rang so true. If you have been a girl who routinely presented with a degree of gender-nonconformity, several people have accused you of being childish in your gender-nonconformity (it goes hand in hand with the “you will grow out of it”) especially if you have expressed doubt or dislike with the feminine behavior pushed on/expected of you. Embracing culturally appropriate femininity is considered as a sign of maturity while rejecting it will have you labeled as childish. I was nice that the movie acknowledged it. Even more considering that Alma is more mature than Elvira in a way. Indeed, Elvira is the one who constantly refers and defers to their mother and Alma is the one developing as an independent person from her only parent.
