Ever wondered why June 12, 1898, is celebrated as the official Independence Day of the Philippines, despite the country being granted independence on July 4, 1946, by the last country to do so?
In 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal issued Proclamation No. 28, moving the date of Philippine independence from July 4 to June 12. The significance of this change lies in the historical context and the desire to establish a distinct identity for the Philippines' Independence Day. This change was confirmed by Republic Act No. 4166, signed on August 4, 1964, which formally set June 12 as the official Independence Day of the Philippines.
President Macapagal's decision to shift the date to June 12 was rooted in acknowledging the establishment of the Philippine Republic by General Emilio Aguinaldo on that day in 1898. This date symbolized the Filipino people's assertion of their right to self-determination, liberty, and independence, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's history.
The move from July 4 to June 12 was not only a change in dates but a reflection of the evolving identity of the Philippines and a break from historical ties to the United States. It was a deliberate choice to honor the Filipino people's struggle for sovereignty and to celebrate the day when the nation boldly declared its desire for freedom and autonomy from colonial rule.
President Macapagal's decision was also influenced by political considerations, including the rejection of a proposed war reparation bill by the U.S. House of Representatives in 1962. This rejection sparked "indignation among the Filipinos" and led to a "loss of American goodwill in the Philippines." President Macapagal saw this as the right time to push for the change in the independence date, a move he had been planning even before assuming the presidency.
Furthermore, the shift to June 12 was a recognition of the historical significance of the date when independence was proclaimed and the national flag and anthem were formally presented to the Filipino people. This change reflected the evolving identity of the nation and highlighted the Filipino people's unwavering spirit in their quest for freedom and autonomy.
Ultimately, the change from July 4 to June 12 as Philippine Independence Day was a deliberate and meaningful decision that celebrated the country's unique path to independence and self-governance. It was a reflection of the Filipino people's determination to assert their right to self-determination and liberty, making June 12 a date that truly embodies the essence of Filipino independence and nationhood.
For more detailed information on the history of Republic Day and the significance of the date changes, you can visit the Official Gazette website.

On June 12, 1898, a defining moment in Philippine history unfolded as General Emilio Aguinaldo, the leader of the Filipino revolutionary forces, proclaimed the country's independence from Spanish colonial rule. The proclamation took place in Cavite El Viejo, present-day Kawit, Cavite, marking a significant milestone in the country's quest for sovereignty.
General Emilio Aguinaldo, alongside 98 delegates, signed the Act of the Declaration of Independence of the Filipino People. This act was prepared, written, and read by Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista, emphasizing the nation's sovereignty and autonomy from Spanish dominance. The proclamation was a bold assertion of the Philippines' desire for freedom and self-governance.
During the declaration, the original flag of the Philippines was unfurled, symbolizing the nation's identity and aspirations. The flag was handcrafted in Hong Kong by Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad. It featured a white triangle symbolizing equality, a sunburst representing the eight provinces that fought against Spain, a blue stripe for peace, truth, and justice, and a red stripe for patriotism and valor. Three stars on the flag symbolized Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the three main island groups of the Philippines.
The proclamation of independence on June 12, 1898, was a pivotal moment in Philippine history, signifying the country's courageous stand against colonial oppression and its determination to chart its destiny. The flag raised during this historic event became an enduring symbol of the Filipino people's struggle for freedom and self-determination, encapsulating the spirit of unity, resilience, and national pride.
This declaration on June 12, 1898, remains a cornerstone of Philippine independence, embodying the resilience and spirit of the Filipino nation in its pursuit of liberty and self-rule.

๐Ÿซโœจ Trivia Time! Did you know that the original name of our school was not San Antonio National High School, but rather Labo National High School - Annex B? It was founded in 2001 before being formally recognized as San Antonio National High School in 2009 through Republic Act No. 9558. The school was founded to address the educational needs of barangay San Antonio and surrounding barangays, and we, the batch 2006, were the first batch produced by the educational institution.
