The Clicking Noise.
You watched the dickhead do the same routine movements he did every day.
*Click-crack-crunch… Click!*
something about the way he kept the same habits made you want to rip the screw out of his head. You knew exactly what it did and why he had it but you didn’t want to hear it every time he walked into the same room. it had been 10 years of the same-
*Click-crack-crunch… Click!* By now you wouldn’t be surprised if he was doing it on purpose to tick you off.
you see, after a decade of silently competing, him being the best meister and you being the best weapon you were both sick of each other. In fact, the two of you had never even had a proper conversation because Death had said something about your souls not being compatible. something to do with the power of both of them clashing. You understood, even outside of the logical sense, the sheer amount of soul power in one room would have been heavy to deal with if you were just a normal student. That and he was unpleasant to deal with, just being near him was painful for both of you. That and, for some reason he really grinded your gears.
But, those years of learning at the academy had passed and now the two of you had gone your different ways. Stein with Deathsythe and you churning through meisters like there was no end to them. technically it wasn’t your fault, its just hard to find someone who's soul doesn’t collapse when you link. That and, you were known for having a, shall we say *shitty* personality. Sounded similar to someone else you knew but you would never admit that.
Yet, here you were, the two of you summoned by Death in the same room despite his previous announcement ten years ago you were too dangerous to link.
*Click-crack-crunch… Click!*
You grit your teeth, not wanting to look his way but knowing he was boring his eyes into you.
Death clapped, in an attempt to chop the atmosphere but all that sounded was a dull echo awkwardly filling the room. There was a sigh that followed shortly after.
“So! the two of you in one room and not staring each other down like you're going to kill each other!” Death hummed again, filling the silence. he shifted well aware of the relationship the two standing in-front of him had built over the past years and pondered how he would fix this, feeling partially responsible. “I know you two have had a, strenuous relationship, given the general energies around your souls and certain, competitive tendencies but I have a request for the both of you.”
You heard a different noise click this time and waited for a response out of him. Instead, the smell of a cigarette wafted through your hair. you bit the inner part of your lip as the anger succumbed to wanting a light, but only for a moment. You had been trying to quit. For four years.
Wheels moving turned into soft slaps of leather on the ground and he moved closer to you and death. You heard an inhale, prepping yourself for something sarcastic to slip out of his ugly mouth. “I wasn’t sure you were capable of being late.” He exhaled onto your neck, you felt goosebumps rise and cursed yourself. That was another thing about Dr. Stein, he had no concept of personal space. You had heard multiple times from weapons who had worked with him that they had woken up with scars they didn’t have before sleeping round his place.
You grinned in response. Forcing etiquette in-front of Death, you weren't going to let this sadist ruin your already shitty day. Everything about him was suffocating, from his attitude to his reputation. On top of that, Stein was, as much as you hate to admit it, way more refined that you were. He had the ability to use any weapon to get better and strong but you had never had a partnership with a meister long enough to strengthen your soul bonds. Right now, compared to him, you were raw, unkempt and dangerous in terms of power. “I thought i’d have a go at trying your routine for once.” you turned away from him, but you could still feel the grin wrapping around his face.
Death coughed, he was obviously struggling to catch the both of your attention. ”Now, now stein, They just had a hiccup in battle this morning! Lets all, calm down.”
There was quiet snort from the man who was now standing too close for your comfort. ”Hiccup? sounds about right.” he squashed his thumb to his lips suppressing yet another grin and traced the scar on his face all in one action. “ Well then-“
You interrupted him. “what was the favour Death?” Death stirred, trying to find the right way to word the speech he had tried to prepare beforehand despairingly. You sighed. ”Tell me why I feel like I already know.”
Death put one of his big foam hands on each of your shoulders. “I have been instructed to… Ask you two… Well- first of all, as the two of you have gotten so much stronger in the last couple of years… My instructions…” Death straighened up and coughed. “ Due to the rise in keishan eggs and reports of witches, black blood and metier/weapon ‘chimeras’ Some of the higher ups have become concerned about you two going off the rail. Given your previous records and how powerful your souls both are. They think, the chance of you two joining the other side is higher than you two working with us so-“
Stein intterupted, ”excuse me? Death, i know the higher ups are-“
“*So*” Death cut him off. ”You two will be training toghether from now on to become the perfect soul bond to report to the higher ups.” Death paused, considering the shock of the announcement. ”of course, there is a reason *I* need you to do this as well .” death hesitated. ”i feel like you two should start putting in the effort tot like each other! its horrible to be in the same room as you two!” and with that deaths invisible smile curved upwards and you felt a shiver of dread travel up your spine as you felt the ever growing smoke cloud laugh over your head.
“Lets get to work.” Was smugly said and the words stuck to your eardrums.
“Fuck me.” you muttered.
