NCU Campus Security vs Student Rights
Good Morning beautiful people!
As we all know, Northern Caribbean University is a Seventh-day Adventist institution, so certain rules they may follow are based on their beliefs. Because not everyone on this campus is a Seventh-Day Adventist, different beliefs and practices exist. However, as an Adventist institution, they are permitted to practice and enforce their beliefs as rules, but not to compel anyone, as each student signed a contract. They use campus security to keep an eye on things to ensure that certain rules are followed. Despite their legal right, not all students will constantly be accurate in following the rules on a daily basis due to cultural or religious beliefs.Â
Campus security violates a wide range of rights, including freedom of movement, privacy, conscience, expression, and so on. Though it is their responsibility to enforce the rules, the manner in which they approach students is critical. They must ensure that the rights of these individuals as students and citizens are not violated when dealing with individuals.  I believe they should be trained and educated on the rights guaranteed by the Constitution, as well as how to enforce rules without infringing on them. Above all, they should never let their personal preferences or opinions interfere with their professionalism.
Know Your Rights! NO matter what rules an institution has, they should ensure it never infringes on one's legal rights as a citizen.

Police and Citizens

"What have I done, officer?" he exclaimed, between sobs and confusion. The officers looked at him and stated "Come with us to the station sir you have all right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law." Miriam watched as they pulled her husband away. Bounded by confusion and shock she exclaimed "fight them off Jack and run! Leave him alone why are you hitting him like that?" she shouted to her husband on the police. Jack stood dumbfounded and as he was being pulled away he pondered " should I run? but run for what I haven't done anything wrong."
Hello again people quite scenery I painted today to set the mood for our discussion for today. However question, Have you ever been approached by a police officer? Comment and let me know.
Today I am hear to speak to you on what to do when a police officer approaches you and what to expect.
Firstly we can all agree when being pulled over by and officer we get the chills of guilt even when we are not guilty and for those who are caught in the act our first instinct is to retaliate or attack just to get away but is that as smart move? Definitely not! Police officers can approach a citizen for many reasons whether arrest, search, seizure or detention, or simple questioning and as of such your reaction to their approach says a lot and may lead to unwanted troubles.
What should I do when I am being approached my police officers?
Remain Calm - one might say it is hard to remain calm especially if u are looking at time behind bars but remember one is Innocent until proven guilty so try you best to be calm as possible it might just get you out of trouble.
Do Not retaliate or run- Whether you are guilty of an offence no matter how scared, shock or afraid you are DO NOT retreat to running or hostility will only make matters worst for you and make you look guilty.
Listen Carefully- Listen carefully to what the officers has to say so you are fully aware of what is going on in the even you need to write a report or follow instructions.
Do as you are told- Whatever these officers as you do ensure you are not resisting by complying with all given instructions whilst keeping in mind your rights.
Have you ever been approached by a police in an unprofessional manner ? If yes comment your experience if possible. Police are trained and are educated on have to approach citizens. As a citizen play keen attention as to what you should expect when or if a police officer approaches you.
Expectation of a police officers approach to citizens or non-citizens:
No use of force- When a police officer is approaching an individual no initial force is needed unless one beginnings to retaliate. Even if the individual wishes to remain silent he or she has a right to do so hence they should remain professional and carry out task.
Questioning- One should expect the police to asked question upon arrival as they see fit however they should remain professional and polite not intimidating as to coheres citizens
Taking statements: Bases on the situation the police might take a statement however please not if u are under age you are not suppose be questioned without a parent of guardian on site.
Must show credentials- Each and ever citizen has the right to see a police officer's identification credentials so he/ she must be ready to show those at any given time or upon arrival.
There you have it guys! Though police approaches my seem terrifying don't you ever run or cause a scene. Remember one is always innocent until proven guilty.

Violation of Citizen Rights

Are your rights being breached? Do you know what steps to take when your rights are being violated?
Violation refers to an act that infringes against an agreement, principle. A violation of human rights is the denial of the individual liberty and motion to which all humans are legally entitled.
According to the Jamaican constitution of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms states that "If any person alleges that any of the provisions of this Chapter has been, is being or is likely to be contravened in relation to him, then, without prejudice to any other action with respect to the same matter which is lawfully available, that person may apply to the Supreme Court for redress."
In other words, your rights are protected by the Constitution, and you can seek redress by petitioning the Supreme Court if your rights have been violated or you have reasonable grounds for believing they have been violated.
If your rights are being violated you can contact the following individuals/organizations :
Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM)
The Office of the Public Defender
Ombudsman
Supreme Court (Judge by making an appeal)
The Independent Jamaica Council for Human Rights
Ministry of Justice
Legal Aid Council
Have your rights ever been violated? Comment below.
If you are aware of your rights or others being violated DO NOT be afraid to speak out! Protect your rights!
Stay tuned for our next post, in which we will discuss the police and citizens. Remember to like, comment, and take notes.
