i love how people interpret characters in rwby in the most bland and boring way possible
they take jaune, a deconstruction of a overtly "alpha" dude (lets be real he was a bit if a tryhard loser at the beginning) with a lovely sense of non toxic masculinity (healer, developing emotional intelligence, consumer of respect women juice) and turns him into some sort of haram enjoying chad.
they take yang, someone burdened with incredible responsibility that created both a sense of maturity and deep seated insecurities and turn her into a bubbly bimbo
they take ruby, whose relentless positivity is both a boon and a burden and who is deconstruction of the chosen one trope (she may have a special ability but without everyone else she would be absolutely dead by now) and turns her into small happy child who is the only one who can save the world.
(i'm sure this applies to other characters but this is just off the top off my head)
it's like being served a plate of deliciously seasoned fried chicken and saying you know what would make this better? if i scraped the breading off and put some mayonnaise on top.
That is something I've noticed for a long, long time. There are aspects of the FNDM that HATE how complex the characters have turned out to be. A common one I've heard is "Yang isn't fun anymore."
They wanted RWBY to play it safe and be this stereotypical fantasy fighting school anime because that's what they expected. You see, they don't actually like thinking about things. For all their talk about characters with 'gray morality' they can't handle it when the choices the protagonists have to make are complex.
I feel like a lot of us came into RWBY from the opposite direction. If it had stayed a school anime with unchanging static characters I would have lost interest ages ago. Seeing these people change, evolve, survive pain and trauma but still be heroes has been a privilege.
If you want a bologna, American cheese and mayo sandwich on white bread then RWBY ain't for you. It's a feast with many complex flavors and nuanced experiences.
As always, RWBY deserves a smarter audience.
#rwde#gotta love how incredibly stupid the FNDM can be#though I will say jaune wasn’t drinking respecting women juice in v1 & v2#because of him disrespecting weiss’ boundaries#but other than that yeah I agree#don’t even get me started on how people treat emerald#how they portray her is… well there’s a reason why I don’t trust most people with her character

people really have an issue with yang not being a lesbian playgirl? she had abandonment issues and a tragic family background, like what made some of you think she ever prioritized her romantic life (flirt/flings/love alike) in any way? i think she's very clearly terrified of all that, and maybe some people have deviated too much from canon or just projected too much onto her, honestly.
that damned wink at random guys early on has done irreparable damage to this fandom, in that, it convinced everyone of a different hc:
• "oh she's bi/pan/het"
• "oh she has hetero-normativity and is a lesbian"
• "oh she's just a player and a flirt"
Turns out everyone is wrong and she's neither of these things because her disaster ass could not get close to a man OR girl due to her personal issues, she hasn't even paid attention to who she could like. blake is the only person she's ever liked, trusted and loved, and that only happened because she was "forced" so close to her when they became partners that she couldn't ignore the feelings!
like i think the point is that, being all confident in yourself and stuff doesn't mean you got it all figured out, and it shows when despite being this huge cocky personality...you don't flirt once with someone that isn't blake ???? come on it was cristal clear that she had no interest in flirting or dating if it wasn't blake. she didn't even flirt back (sarcastically) at neon in V3 !!! like if she was truly a flirt that would have been the perfect chance to respond.
this is why that scene with the guys early on is so random, like completely out of character to me. it would be interesting to see how crwby would comment on that line nowadays, bc my impression is that the scene was a weak attempt at tricking the audience into thinking she's a party girl and then show you later that she's actually "more than meets the eye".
anyways rant over
#yang xiao long#bumbleby#sunshine dragon#for real THO#yang is the complete opposite of a total flirt#on top of that#yang always prioritized other people#and probably felt conflicted about putting herself first for once#yang likes to have fun#however it’s always there’s a time & a place for everything with her#rwby

It's almost beyond my wildest dreams that everything I've ever thought about Bumbleby and especially about Yang's feelings and journey of self-discovery is essentially true.
Blake is her first love and her gay awakening and while she's bold and outspoken, it's a facade. Especially when it comes to love and romance. She's awkward and sweetly shy when it comes to admitting her feelings. Of course, once she realizes her feelings are reciprocated she's demonstrative and open about her relationship with Blake.
I love this so much, it just feels so REAL.
#yang xiao long#bumbleby#sunshine dragon#she’s got that adorkable rizz#she pulled a bad bitch like blake by being silly & goofy#honestly iconic!!!#👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻#rwby

Knowing what we do now about Yang and her romantic/sexual awakening re-contextualizes a lot of Bees scenes.
Blake knew her heart and what she wanted at minimum since V3 but Yang? She had all these feelings and not the slightest idea of what to do with them. Loss, anger, grief and this undefinable LONGING.
And then at the end of V5 there was Blake again and all those emotions just came rushing in and she had to try to understand them which lead to a lot of the awkwardness they had in V6.
After the encounter with Adam, Blake didn't push Yang and Yang was happy with them just being...them. Learning to enjoy each other's company while they had time.
Then the end of V8 came and...well, both of them learned that the universe doesn't often give second chances. Blake thought Yang was dead and...well, Yang thought she was dead too. Which meant both of them believed that they'd never see each other again, never be able to tell them what they actually felt.
So, when the universe decided that it was time, there they were. Blake who through Yang learned to love again and Yang through Blake learning that she could love another woman, this woman.
Everything started making sense to Yang, this is who she is and this is who she loves.
This journey is just about the most beautiful thing I've ever watched.

That’s why Yang will always be my favorite RWBY character. She has so many angles, obvious and hidden, to her character.
She’s sociable and fun, caring and supportive, studious and responsible, book and mechanically smart, and can overpower monsters six times her size, but she’s also shy, fearful, a terrible flirt, doesn’t know how to be selfish, does admittedly have a temper, etc.
She’s so amazing and yet so relatable!
Just like Blake, Yang has my heart now and forever.
They told us from the start that she was more than meets the eye. Beneath that admittedly gorgeous exterior is one of the purest, most loving hearts.
And she's well-aware of her faults too. Her failures have defined her and she's wise enough to learn from them and for a girl who said that she was only a Huntress for the adventure, she's turned out to be one of the most devoted to the cause of protecting people.
I love her so damn much!!
#yang xiao long#sunshine dragon#she’s my 2nd fave character & fave from team RWBY for a reason!!#I love her so much!!!#I hate how people blatantly misinterpret her character#rwby

so the blu ray commentary for volume 9 has the writers indicate that Weiss telling RBY about what happened after they fell was meant to communicate her telling them all that Jaune mercy killed Penny and that it didn't make sense to them for Ruby to mad at him over it (just like she wasn't mad at Pyrrha in volume 3) - but how they clearly didn't make that clear enough
to be perfectly honest it seemed evident enough to me and the whole "so when do you think Jaune is going to tell them he killed Penny" thing was baffling like
context clues are given to indicate what happened and there's no hint that Weiss left out any information
but anyway, as you might have guessed, people are getting mad about it again
#I honestly got the gist of what they were trying to convey#however I do agree that it could’ve been better communicated#that being said I know people are being stupid about this#and these people need to stfu & go touch grass#rwby
